I agree, having grown up in Toronto, the most multicultural city in the world, when the World Cup happens, many ethnic people often cheers for the country of their ancestry OVER Canada....and no one bats an eye. My Italian Canadian friends, many of them 2nd or 3rd generation would cheer on Italy even if they played Canada. The problem of some koreans are due to the fact that they have been so homogeneous for so long, they don't understand foreign views and don't understand the difference between a personal and an official viewpoint. Some xenophobia will happen as a country transitions towards a more multicultural state.
@anaisc87332 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's about "deserting" your identity but rather integrating/assimilating yourself in the country in which you live. You are not going to live in a country that is not yours if you wish to live as you lived in your country, otherwise it makes no sense to expatriate.

@@casualsuede It's a tricky situation to strike a balance in. @@anaisc8733 I think it depends on your reason for moving to another country. We have a lot of expats who go to Asia for work and they generally stick together to keep whatever traditions and cultural things they did here alive there because of their experiences of being outcasted. Of course educating yourself on the societal norms of where you're going to and trying to adopt some of those mannerisms makes it easier for you to become 'part' of that society but to me it doesn't seem right to start doing things that either have different meanings or weren't taught as necessary in your culture and society just to please the people and get them off your back. To be hated at for not wanting to do something is not a new issue and it'll always be around because it's very easy to unintentionally offend someone.
@anaisc87332 жыл бұрын
@@forevera5241 I know that when it comes to work - and therefore an obligation for certain people - they are less respectful, but I find that to be unfortunate, because whatever the reason for moving in, people who are going to live in another country should show respect but hey, not all human beings are sensitive to this kind of respect towards others, especially in our era where the wrong kind of communitarianism and patriotism reigns. As I said, and I agree with you, doing "to please the people and get them off your back" should not be the reason but respect should prevail. In my culture, there are many things I don't do like others, but when I go to live in another country for a few months - which I often do for my job - I try to learn the language (if I don't know it already), I learn the customs whether religious or not, I eat and dress like the citizens norms, I integrate into the mores of the society, I am interested in history and the national political situation and international. And it's not about not offending people, it's about learning the beauty that other cultures have to offer, being curious and showing respect no matter who you're talking to. People are far too narcissistic and navel-gazing today, it's all about the "self" for the wrong reasons, such misplaced pride is an issue, so people should be more humble, appreciate people and differences around.

This is gonna be long but I feel there is a need to explain the meaning of kneeling in Chinese culture. I am Chinese diaspora (3rd gen ethnic Chinese in southeast asia) and not PRC Chinese, so I don’t know for sure in today’s China…. But yes in my culture as I know it, we don’t kneel down to other ppl easily. When we kneel, we humble ourself completely. It is the utmost level of humility given, almost sacred, and we prob only do it to our parents/grandparents, and only in weddings for elders in the extended family. Or when praying and also when begging. There is a Chinese saying 男儿膝下有金 meaning there is gold under the knees of a guy, you must not kneel to anyone easily. It shows the level of importance of kneeling in Chinese culture. You would not even do it to people in higher ranks than you too, like your boss. That said, I think some other Chinese idols could have done it previously to respect Korea’s culture having worked here. Maybe they attach less importance to it. Even as diaspora, having been brought up in a very traditional Chinese family, I do feel a bit strange watching Chinese kneel down for a greeting though I respect their intention - it is for a positive reason ie to send greetings. So my perspective is that there are cultural differences towards kneeling, and it should not be made obligatory simply due to the level of importance of kneeling in Chinese culture to many Chinese, though maybe not all. Not demeaning the Koreans in any way and I understand how it can be seen as rude to the Koreans. And in the political context, the chinese criticism of chinese idols kneeling is like humiliating yourself to your boss who also happen to have a lot of conflict with your country. Peace to all!!

@sxzz39422 жыл бұрын
It’s understandable. Each culture is different. People just need to learn how to respect each other’s beliefs as long as it doesn’t harm anyone. Even if you’re in a different country with different beliefs than yours, it’s wrong for people to think they’re obligated to follow that country’s traditions if it conflicts with their own. In some cultures, you’re not allowed to bow or kneel to other people, you only do that for religious reasons. It would be messed up for having them to be forced to follow someone else’s traditions. There may be alternatives to show respect, but people are so damn sensitive these days that they’ll still find a reason to hate you.

LOL this reminds me of the time when my (Chinese) parents went to a Chinese-Korean wedding (bride was Chinese, groom was Korean). I should clarify that this was in the US. The bride and groom bowed to the groom's parents at the end of the ceremony (like got on their knees) and apparently all of the Chinese wedding guests were shocked and appalled. I wasn't raised bowing to anyone, except for maybe dead ancestors at their graves. Anyway, this resulted in all of the Chinese guests going home and telling their daughters not to marry Korean men because they fear Korean husbands will be too controlling LOL. I was in college at the time and a friend of mine whose parents were also at the wedding told me about this and she said, "Ask your parents if they would want you to marry a Korean" so I did and my mom was like "Noooooooo......" Personally, I think if you're going to be an idol in Korea, just bow. It's not like selling your soul. The Chinese gods are not going to strike you down dead for bowing. It shows respect to the culture that you're in. Don't sacrifice your values on the important stuff but something has harmless as bowing shouldn't be a big deal.

This whole NingNing bowing thing reminds of something my mum once said about the bowing culture in Korea. She said she really admires this gesture of respect and thinks it's very respectful but it's a shame that she wouldn't do it because in our culture/religion, we only bow when we pray, so we ONLY bow to our God. Now I'm wondering, if I go to Korea, of course as the say "when in Rome, you do as the Romans do", but.. Will I have to bow? I mean personally, it's not an issue to me but if I don't bow, as a foreigner, will Koreans be upset by it or will they understand that in other parts of the world, we don't do that? I mean, I know in the East it's more about collectivism rather than individualism so I don't know, does this apply to Koreans only? Or are foreigner expected to do everything Koreans do while in Korea? Because I feel like if NingNing was a non-Chinese foreigner, let's say French, I don't think K-Netizens will be as mad at her for not bowing. They might just think "oh she didn't bow because she's French" and be totally okay with it. I just think it's because of the Anti-China sentiment in Korea. I mean many of my Korean friends have openly said they don't like China in the past but I never really got the chance to ask why, I thought it was a personal thing, but now I realise, no, many Koreans don't like China due to its controversial behaviours..

No, bowing is taken very seriously in Korea. I know this, because Wonyoung - one of the most beloved idols - caused a scandal just last month, because she "wasn't bowing low enough." It's one thing if you're a foreigner, and you just got to Korea, and you're still assimilating. But once you become an idol, the grace period is over. There's no other country in the world that allows you to come to their country, train one or two years, and propels you into a mainstream celebrity. And maybe it was too much, too fast for Ningning, if she still needs more time to assimilate.

Hi 실패자, I am a Muslim and I can understand your concern. It still different from a prayer for God. I spent only 1month in Korea but I did not have that problem in Korea.

They have a lot of anti-China sentiments bc of the Communist government's brainwashing "civic pride" in their citizen and then internet trolls go a little too hard on any anti-china thing which turns all NON-China ppl off. Plus, they have warring oppression history by the Chinese and Japanese, but Japan has been keeping a low profile. China has been pretty much trying to secretly expand and causing problems. And I said non-China ppl bc I am Chinese but from America, 1st gen, so I tow the line being proud of my heritage and not-so proud seeing how the mother land is communist and the ppl are acting ridiculous -since they have been indoctrinated since birth by the communist government. But my unique status allows me to see a different cultural perspective. Growing up, I had one Korean friend and got taken to all these Korean shops and a lot of shop owners were really nice to me until they found out I was Chinese. I just thought it was weird when their attitude switch when my friend told them I was Chinese since I didn't greet them when I entered or bow to them, HA! I was a teen so I shrugged if off like they got some kinda BS history with neighboring Asian countries and I had the American teen attitude of the F imma bow to you for? Lol. Plus, growing up state side in a predominantly black community, I got a lot of prejudices and nose turns so I wasn't bothered by it. I was just like, okay, if that's who you are and going to be, then that's yo problem. But then there was a lot of places that were extra nice to me too even when they knew I was Chinese -mainly bc they thought I was good looking. 😅 I have very western facial features -naturally, especially for someone who is fully Asian, plus I was an art student so I got no sunlight, and we all know what the favored beauty standard Koreans like 😉 But I gotta say I never understood the bowing culture and as a Chinese person I was taught to never bow to anyone and that's only done for gods or worship and maybe kings. Plus, my family saw it as like eating with your hands kind of thing -like we just don't do that and as an American, the general attitude is we don't bow to no one unless you're the queen of England -like royalty. Speaking as a Chinese, from what I understand, bowing is typically a Japanese thing and Chinese ppl have their own history w/ Japanese oppression so there is a lot of cross over to be opposed to any "Japanese" like tradition, bowing being one of them. Basically, for older Chinese ppl, any custom that reminds them of the Imperial Japanese Army -they basically see that like how the Jewish ppl would look at Nazis customs since Japan basically raped, pillaged and killed the Chinese ppl back in the day. So Chinese ppl teach their kids "we don't do anything like the Japanese" ppl since they kill "our people" in a brutal way. I don't know if the "bowing culture" was left over from when Japan took over Korea and that was a left over customs but I think that's how Chinese ppl see it as so there a conflict in how you fell like what you should do so I can see how NingNing would not bow unless you're like the CEO of SM or the Korean president. It's kind of like how Koreans see "skinship" vs Americans which is a very hands on culture like hugging, patting, handshaking. Like ppl here Hug all the time for no reason and it would be like giving Karina a hard time bc she didn't hug ppl when she was promoting in the US. It's kinda weird to give an overseas Korean promoting in the US criticism bc they won't hug ppl since that's not what they are use to. (Although, I gotta say it was kinda entertaining to watch BTS' shocked face when interviewers try to hug them as a hello and they quietly try to avoid it with shoulder pat.) Some cultures give you a kiss one each cheek as a hello and it would be like netizen criticizing you for not receiving and kissing them back when other cultures, especially Korea, would feel like that's excessive bc they were taught that we don't do that with strangers.

As Chinese Italian I can say that there is nothing wrong with claim a cultural minority of an another country. In Italy we got German minorities but for sure we don't claim Germany as territory. One thing is criticize Chinese governments, another is be against Chinese people. Yiren and Ning Ning did not disrespect Korean people, they just did the gratings in according of the personal feelings. We should respect that. And we should understand and watch the meaning of the words and rituals, or these will be empty shells.
@morningcalmrisingsun2 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a little more complicated than that. If Italians started to claim Germany as their territory (ie Roman empire had taken some of the territory across the Rhine in ancient history) the other EU member states would cry hypocrisy and there would be no EU or even NATO if each member country tried to claim other people's current land in Europe. China and Russia are different, they feel they need to have world influence so territories or even sovereign countries like the Crimea, eastern Ukraine, Taiwan, Nepal etc are just "lost" land they need to get back to proclaim their past glory.
@rhynzard2 жыл бұрын
@@morningcalmrisingsun but china never claim Korea as their territory (and in this case it will be actually North Korea). And Taiwan is 100 % Chinese. They claim actually to be the real Chinese government and they are registered as the Republic of China, not even Taiwan.
@morningcalmrisingsun2 жыл бұрын
@@rhynzard Taiwan is 100% Chinese *ethnically* but so is Singapore to a certain extent. Chinese people need to know the difference between the government and what the people want. Political systems and race is not one and the same. (Look at North and South Korea, we're not similar people, we're actually the same people but divided politically) Look at the Russia and Ukraine situation. The Ukrainian people don't want to be invaded by anybody, let alone Russia. Russia and Ukraine are both slavic and their languages are almost identical to each other (more identical than Mandarin and Cantonese). Taiwan no matter what, even if they claim to be the real government of China, never coveted the mainland as I understand it. Rather it's the other way around. China wants to take over Taiwan like they did with Hong Kong (and at least Hong Kong people wanted unification so it was consensual). Taiwanese want to stay independent and as a full democracy. Also, China not voting to condemn the invasion of Ukraine is a passive indication that they want to invade and take over other countries themselves in the future.
@rhynzard2 жыл бұрын
@@morningcalmrisingsun well Taiwan is ethnically, culturally, geografically Chinese. With different government. And both RP China anche Republic of China are agree (at moment) on documents for a reunification, agreed even by USA as where is just one China. This is not anyway related to Korea since is a fact that RP China is non claiming north Korea territories and is a fact that there are ethnically Korean in China since che kingdom of Korea was ones bigger than the actual 2 Korean countries.
@morningcalmrisingsun2 жыл бұрын
@@rhynzard Yet, Taiwan is not politically Chinese. That's the most important difference. I think you would need Taiwanese sources to see if unification is what Taiwanese actually want and not just from CCP sources. I have a lot of doubt if what you just said is true and never have I heard Taiwanese want to join China both from the news and from talking to regular Taiwanese. That's why I raised my point about Ukraine and Russia; even though they are almost the same people, Ukrainian citizens made it clear they don't want to join Russia. With Korea, back in 2008 China did create the North East project which claimed that Koguryeo is historically Chinese. That's the first step from Korea's perspective that China started the propaganda campaign "justification" to later annex North Korea or likely even South Korea. Of course it won't happen currently because of Kim Jong un's on friendly terms with China.

What annoys me is that in no other business except Kpop do people expect individuals to adhere to imbalanced and and unfair contracts OR dislike people completing their contracts and moving on. There is nothing wrong with Chinese idols going back to their home market and working. In fact some companies specifically send their idols to China to develop parallel careers in China while still under contract to receive a cut from their work there. If they were in unfair contracts they would want to exit them if they could. Korea JUST adjusted their financial banking practices to allow foreign idols to receive equal and full pay. It's wild.

While I agree (as an immigrant myself) with the stance of "when in Rome do as the Romans", I do agree with Dan that the NingNing controversy only started specifically because she is Chinese (as with Yiren). For example, would there be this much controversy if hypothetically a white western idol (not saying they're many ones, much less relevant ones) refused to do a deep bow? Surely some would complain because it always happens but would there be /backlash/ of this extent? I feel that in a case like this most people would understand that it feels too forced and disingenuous nearly to partake in such a respected tradition. It's like when I go to Church as a non-catholic, I don't go up to receive communion (I could, even just to receive a blessing) but I don't feel like it's my place to do so (and not because I have a problem with it, just out of respect). I'm sure if any of us, non-koreans/Japanese were in that situation we would also not feel entirely comfortable with it and not because of ego or anything of the sort, just it doesn't feel "ours". Maybe some of us would just do it but I personally think I'd feel very uncomfortable about it.

Personally I agree with what David is saying. But as a Canadian, there are often stigmas around China as well... and though it roots from the issues that Canada-Chinese-USA relations are, there is no need to drag KPOP idols or other celebrities into these political issues, etc. The problem is the way how netizens, whether Korean, Chinese, American, Canadian, etc. are expressing their hatred online. There should be less interventions and relations of political issues with mainstream/pop culture. There should be a clear line drawn. It makes celebrities and music look cheap and insignificant. Music should be a way that we unite fans and people internationally. I know idols and love for them is imbedded in KPOP culture, but there should be control around what is mentioned and what is said online... or at least trying to.

On the other hand, I can understand if someone feels strongly against the beliefs of another culture, they might not want to follow those customs - but if it were me, if I felt THAT strongly against those customs and beliefs, I wouldn't visit that place to begin with. I certainly wouldn't move there on a permanent (or even several years) basis. On the OTHER other hand, simply expressing support for your own country doesn't seem out of line - using the analogy of visiting other homes, even if I'm at a friend's house, I can still say I love my parents, while still following the customs and rules of the friend's parents.

The girl is literally only trying to sing and dance, for Pete's sake! If the situation was reversed and a Korean idol went to China and followed Chinese traditions of paying respect instead of doing them in the Korean way, would k-nets be proud or label them as traitorous? My guess is the later... because k-nets are apparently NEVER happy with anything idols (foreign or domestic) say or do. Just about every DKDK News there seems to be a "K-nets are angry" segment... when does it end? How are they not exhausted being angry all the damn time? By all means, hate on the PRC government... but save your anger/hate for the people who are in charge and/or pointedly being hostile towards Korea... not some young performer only trying to keep two abusers simultaneously happy.

I understand that Koreans may see it as offensive when someone does not participate in their culture, like the formal bowing to greet someone for the New Year. However, if it is going against someone else’s culture/beliefs and they choose not to do it, it is their decision and we should respect that as well. It is not like these idols are trying to disrespect the Korean culture. They may just feel uncomfortable doing it, whatever their reason may be. I personally am religious and in my religion it is not okay to bow like that for anyone but for God. So, if I were an idol, I’d probably do the same like the Chinese idols. A different way of greeting to still be respectful, but not a full bow. I hope the hate towards Ningning stops. She deserves so much love 💕

As a Chinese American who is very critical of the Chinese government, there's just no winning for me. All rhetoric criticizing China inevitably turns on all Chinese people. In America, all Asian Americans deal with the perpetual foreigner syndrome, where society keeps questioning our loyalty. From the Chinese perspective, they think we should be loyal to China and deems us as traitors otherwise. All the legitimate and illegitimate criticism has driven most Chinese citizens and some overseas Chinese to be very defensive of China. There's no simple answers to how to argue the geopolitics of it all without devolving into racism and sinophobia. This winter Olympics for America has an underlying focus on the "bad" and "good" immigrant narrative, between Eileen Gu who chose to represent China vs Nathan Chen who represents America. With both being bashed by opposite countries.

I think people should also understand other cultures, when I travel myself, I don't keep my habits due to my culture at all costs, and on the contrary, I learn and I show respect to the country I visit or in which I will spend time. Just like wanting to live in another country, you learn the language, the history, and therefore the culture as a whole. Well these Chinese idols, in my opinion should do the same thing in South Korea, but the problem remains in the fact of the tension between South Korea and China, and that neither of the two countries wishes to "submit" to another, and so the smallest things - which have meanings for one - like bowing out of respect, is seen by the Chinese as a humiliation. It's sad, because having the opportunity to live in another country, to learn another culture should be praised, rather than wanting to stay in one's culture at all costs. People find it hard to understand that one can be respectful and eager to learn a culture without forgetting one's identity and origins. However, the hatred towards these groups is very and - too - intense, the backlash of netizens whether in China towards RM or in South Korea towards NingNing (and other Chinese idols) should be rational and calm, especially in view of the political situation and put out the fire.

We were also enslaved by the Russian Empire, then by the USSR. Therefore, even though the situation between our countries is different, I can understand the frustration accumulated by generations. I'm American, so I don't have a dog in this fight. However, I think if someone wants to promote products or make money in Korea, one needs to not disrespect Korea and Korean culture. As much as Western cultures have problems with Asian Hate, Japan and China have sensitive historical issues and cultural appropriation. Would either of them tolerate a person from another country doing some of the recent behaviors? I'm for free speech, but also think one's speech can have consequences. On a side note, I really love you guys and Nakd Seoul.

Chinese American here (1st gen), I was was told that we don't kneel or bow to no one. I'm American so my attitude was more like a The F do I care about that. LOL But when the topic comes up bc my parents watch some kinda of movie and caught some feelings, the discussing comes up. And I believe the Chinese culture of NOT kneeling/bowing was a left over means of protest for the oppression, a form of submission, from when the Imperial Japanese Army used that custom, their custom, as a means to dominate and subjugate the Chinese ppl so most Chinese ppl don't feel too good about doing that. All Asian ppl are prideful people. You know, old unresolved trauma and all. You respect your parents and your grandparents, ect so you listen to their teaching and certain Japanese customs of anything that reminds them of the group of ppl that basically were like Asian Nazis to them, would be taught that you don't do those customs from the people who tortured and terrorized your ancestors. (You know Asian ppl hold grudges.🤣Petty AF bc Asian ppl don't know how to talk about their feelings. They just suppress everything down and work until they blow up on something silly like you didn't wash the dishes.) So when that conversations come up, it was always referenced back to the the Japanese, but since there are some traditional customs spill over from when Japan controlled Korea, I think Chinese ppl just sees that as a Japanese custom that you don't do that if you have any self-respect. (You can look into where the bowing culture began from for Koreans. I always thought it was from Japan's influence. I didn't know much about Korean traditions but when I was learning it from show, I was kinda like: huh, they have a lot of Japanese influence it would seem. I don't know if that custom is traditionally Korean or was Japanese influenced and I'm not trying to "claim" traditions but I also thought a lot of the things I saw represented in Korean show were very Chinese. For the most part, I'm American so I have no skin in the game to say no that's "ours." I just wanted to be like look at what you're wearing to all these online chatter on both side. It's all western influences and it's okay. YOU think jeans are Asian in any sense of the fashion? LOL. If you look at clothes, food, and culture, heck, religion, it's all western, Anglo influenced. You don't see western countries getting up in arms like that's "ours" so you need shake my hand when you see me. The online chatter/argument is kinda nonsense. I mean they're mad at the Chinese Communist government and want to take it out on a Chinese idol that is barely an adult whose only been taught how to sing, dance, and pose for pictures.)

I’m not surprised they go back to China and talk crap on korea. They get brutalized in the news all the time. Why would they go back to China and be like korea was so sweet.

i agree people shouldn’t forget history but we can’t hold that upon each and everyone just because they’re from that said country which did some bad in the past when these young people didn’t even take part in that historical issue i also think all of us should be critical with our own countries because that’s they way we can try to make a change for our own good, because no country is perfect also the act of other people’s wrong acting shouldn’t affect others just because they share the same native country

I’m okay with not bowing; however, be respectful of/to those that are observing. Don’t “screw” around!

David, what you spoke of about the historical/political relationship between China and Korea sounds quite a bit like how Africans were viewed as ... I'll stay nice ... less than human. When you first started your explanation, this was my first thought. Thank you both for all of your explanations.💜
