Capillary action for the oil wicking. The rc oil is silicon based oil. You can get them from 20W to 2,000,000W. Used to lubricate/stiffen component movement, in gears/shocks.

Al Krug has a excellent website that had several articles on tractive effort. In some cases, a light GP40-2 could pull more paying tonnage than a heavy SD40-2. This occurred as the speed when up.

IDEA: I think that you guys, if and once you make your server larger and more populated, that you could make it a challenge for each player to make it to a certain amount of money. Each player would have their own company and they could have like 2 people per team if they wanted to. It would create a need for different company owned cars each with different colors and you could have people operating the yard and and it could be a competitive yet obligatory friendly Competition while running the railway immersivley to not run out of things to do for player in the game.

I would hypothesize that the dampening in a train spring probably comes from the movement in the spring stack and connecting hardware(cause yea, trains heavy).... I think they likely set up the springs and hardware to prevent harmonics.... OR the interactions between different cars provides the dampening required.

I have had the thought before, what would happen if we started designing steam locos with modern math, methods, and materials. I feel like we could perfect steam turbines or make traditional steamers more efficient all-round. But, I don't know, I'm not an engineer.

In that case you might be interested in the PRR T1 Trust project, they are doing exactly that.

The Duke of Gloucester can attest to that! Most efficient steam control, British Caprotti Valve gear. It can outmatch any British steam engine and shes been running since her "corrected rebuild." And she can and still is capable for more. If you want a more modern steam, make the Duke as a foundation design and build from there. Same for the PRR T1, a poppet valve gear of Franklin model. The A1 steam trust is building a brand new Mikado for british rails and its a poppet valve gear of Lentz model. Modern steam requires any poppet valve gear designs as the timings are much tighter than traditional walschearts or stephensons. Heck even paddle steamers rebuilt in the 2000s in europe has hydraulic actuated poppet valves for steam admission.

We have perfected steam turbines I'm pretty sure, that's what most power grids rely on, big steam boilers fueled by coal, gas, oil, uranium.

@@Soken50 turbines are very efficient... but it comes with a catch.... its terrible at low speed operations... only reciprocating engines are capable of running at 0rpm. Turbines love constant speed steady load operations unlike a vehicle like a locomotive or a paddle steamer. Larger ships like the Knock Knevis (Seawise Giant), any nuclear power aircraft carrier and nuclear submarines uses steam turbines for power generation for electric propulsion. They maintain steady power at high rpms. Kinda like having a power plant grid system on a ship and sends power to the propulsion units efficiently.

Hey, kAN? Are you and Hyce having any issues with your boxcar since the coal engine update? Mine, whether alone or in a consist, behind any engine other than the Shay, will be rolling along then suddenly act like it’s struck something, the end popping up, even, if it’s loaded. Try pulling it loaded with Betsy at full reg, and you should see what I mean. I’ve had mine explode off at random trying to pull it as it’s done these random stops and it looks like when you caused Hyce in the Climax to do barrel rolls. I’m guessing it’s a new bug since that update…
