Gorgeous space, Kelsey! Just for info, in Ontario you can drill (and even cut) any branch that hangs over your property, but if you cut them you have to return them to the owner of the tree. Of course to maintain a good relationship with your neighbor, it's always better to ask before cutting them off or, in this case, drilling into them. 😅
@wellhello1603

@@wellhello1603 why does everyone keep saying this? I've seen tons of trees between 80 and 50 years old with nails in them. It's the same concept. The tree will put scar tissue around the screw and it will become part of the tree
@tommycarlier9617
@tommycarlier9617 2 жыл бұрын
@@mellie4174 depends largely on the species of tree. Birch for example will almost certainly die. Most trees will be fine as long as the holes are small and few. There's also a difference between hammering in a nail that stays there, not giving bacteria a chance to get in (or a small chance at least). A drill creates a more severe wound than a nail, plus you've got a higher chance of bacteria since the hole is left open for a bit before screwing something in it. I highly doubt she killed the whole thing but why risk it (when it isn't hers at that) when she could have looped the chain around

Beautiful! I can’t help but be baffled by the Canadian-ness of this reno ahaha, I really makes me smile. As an Aussie, every time I see electrical fittings and changes done by a non-electrician, I can’t help but feel something is going to go terribly wrong ahaha. It’s illegal to do lots of electrical work in Australia without a licence! I was equally stunned to see a mirror in the yard - if you did that in Aus, it would be huge fire hazard in the sunlight! Leaving candles outside is just asking for trouble, too, since they’d melt and warp so easily. I don’t know if it would be an issue in Canada ahaha The mention of squirrels makes me smile, too. I’m much more used to having possums or birds getting into things! I love seeing how differently we do things around the world! Kelsey, this all looks so wonderful! What a huge effort!
@MaggieStrange1

WHOA honestly I am tickled to find out a mirror outside would be a fire hazard. I live in Michigan (close to Canada, practically the same climate) and that would neeeeeever occur to me or anyone else I'd imagine. it's just not sunny/hot enough here! so interesting.

As an Aussie who lived in Toronto for 4 years I get that as well. Electrical work and possums, all true. Now the problem we have here is bush turkeys and wallabies getting into things as well as possums and birds; Canadians have squirrels, raccoons and foxes to deal with. For me this video was a nostalgia trip in some ways as I recognise the house style from my time there. I have left candles undercover outside and they did 'slump' with the heat here. When winter comes in Toronto they'll bring everything inside so no frozen candles. 🕯️

I don't want to be the person who always picks out the "stuff" but in this case it's important. Drilling into a tree creates a high likelihood of the tree being dead in a few years. It would be much better to buy one of those metal chain connectors and loop it around the branch. And yes, there are legalities but they differ per situation. There was a woman in Vancouver who was fined $50k per tree for killing her neighbours trees. Just an FYI for anyone else thinking of doing this. Otherwise this was such a fantastic series and well worth the watch. Love your unique way of seeing "problems" and finding creative solutions. Stunning redo!

Good that you said it! Ignorance will not save people from consequences, so it’s good to educate others. Sad that they didn’t even try to look up the legality of it, just did the thing. I was wondering why they wouldn’t loop the chain around instead of drilling , it seemed to not only be a safer option, but easier one as well. Branches grow, so lamps will move eventually.

I didn't realize drilling into the tree could cause problems. I do know that even though the tree overhangs, it's still technically the neighbor's tree and they should have asked the neighbors for permission first.

@@idfkas omg that's something I just learned about! Actually it was crystals in the windowsill being a fire hazard, but boils down to the same thing. I mean, probably not super common but worth knowing so she can check the placement!

Maybe you could add little hooks underneath the top of your garbage system/bench, then but a loop of string on the handle of your bins that you can put over the hooks (and take off when needed). That way the lid of your bins will open at the same time as the bench, if this works. I hope you understand what I mean, I'm not that good at explaining😅

It will most likely attract animals, if there is some form of food she should keep it WELL closed off, and if she wants to discourage them from moving in she can always have some light inside and play some music I'm a wildlife rehabber and this sounds exactly like the kind of place a raccoon would pick to have her babies haha

The gaps can surely be patched up with an elastic band that runs on the outer edges of the doors touching the wall of the building. Also the door frame can be reinforced this way from the inside. I'm sure there is a way to keep things pretty and functional.
@sunnyartsy1263

The transformation looks great! I know this series is meant to be more vlog style and not instructional but I do think you should have mentioned that in most cases barn doors wouldn’t be recommended for a outdoor application due to the gap, lack of seal, and the track and hardware will be susceptible to rust and deteriorating over time unless it is specifically rated by the manufacturer for outdoor use.

Everything looks stunning but I think if you had stained the fence the same colour as the front porch (or the built in garbage can storage) then the backyard would feel more complete. To me the old greyed out wood on the fence makes the space look dreary considering how beautiful the design and colours are for the rest of the backyard. That and repainting the white trim around the front door would’ve been nice finishing touches!

We've bought a house and we're renovating lately. We're almost to the point where we can buy furniture and decorative pieces, but it's soooo expensive. I'd be interested to know if you know how much you spend (on renovations and furnitures) if you're willing to share. I'm a different country, but having a point of comparison would be a good start.

Quick question: since the light you put by your back door came in a pack of 2, would the second light not have worked on the garage if you mounted it horizontally? Love the one you ended up with, too! I was just curious. The space looks beautiful - the backyard, and your whole house, honestly.

There would be very little light from it had it been placed horizontally, as it's essentially an up and down lighter. They're more ambient lighting rather than functional. (I used to work in domestic lighting). Look pretty but not very functional, especially if it's your sole light.
@serenakoleno9338
@serenakoleno9338 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine she could have drilled holes into the bottom of horizontal light to provide more illumination. A rope light following the roofline would look nice for some ambient lighting if it could be inconspicuous. This could be solar with the charging panel placed a little ways away if necessary .

I like the sliding doors in an aesthetic way, but it seems there are big gaps between the interior and exterior. So it will be less reliable as storage space in terms of moist. I think making te opening wider and keep the french doorstyle would’ve done a better job moist-wise.

💡The new lamps look fabulously moody in the far corner above that gorgeous outdoor seating! 😉Although I would've been more cautious about drilling into the tree🌳, esp. since it wasn't mine. ⛓️Using a chain to hang the trio of solar lights was smart! I simply would've recommended wrapping it around the branch & securing with a caribiner or another link🔗. 🐿️ In any event, the squirrels will probably still use it as a climbing apparatus. 🤞At least they won't be able to totally destroy it. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

@Sherri T[A]P Me!! To Have [S]EX With Me It's a matter of city ordinances, not province-level laws. If she actually lives in Toronto, a permit is required unless the less trunk is less than 30 cm in diameter (this is the same whether the tree is entirely on her property or the trunk is on her neighbor's property) See § 813-12.
