In this week’s episode, we discuss the new ball head I finally got along with the 175k giveaway! Ever since I've been focused on landscape photography I think I've changed or upgraded just about every piece of gear that I own from cameras, to lenses, tripods and camera bags, but one thing I've never upgraded was the ball head that I'm using. I've been using the same ball head now for many years with no real complaints, but recently I got my hands on a new ball head that I'm pretty excited about and wanted to share it with you all today.
In this video, I'll review the soon to be released Aspen Ball Head from the Colorado Tripod Company. I don't want to spoil the video, but there's a lot to be desired with this new ball head and I find it perfect for landscape photography. I personally haven't paid much attention to the ball head market over the years, but I've got to believe that this is the best looking one I've ever seen! Plus it's substantially less expensive than the ball head I've been using - it's the classic "win win"! I hope you enjoy this week's video and thanks so much for all the support over the last couple of years AND be sure to stick around to the end for the 175k Giveaway! Thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

"Never had my finger on the pulse of the ball head market" Not something I'd think of keeping up with either. Always felt like once I had one that didn't bother me, that was it forever. Also, I'm using the Lowepro Trek 450. Nice bag, but this giveaway bag looks like a good day-to-day bag.

Never owned a decent ball head or a camera back pack I have never been comfortable with backpacks they are always to big and clumsy, I never carry much equipment so a smaller backpack might just be what I am looking for! Thank you for explaining your latest ball head that looks a decent bit of kit! Oh and well done for attracting all those subscribers.

Well after a year, and the Colorado Tripod Companies inability to actually deliver on this, or any other ball head, or tripod they have. Do you still stand behind them? The products they have made (most all are prototypes only) are top quality. However, as a company they are poor at best! They have taken thousands in deposits for all of their products and delivering virtually none! This is NOT A GOOD COMPANY as far as customer service is concerned. I suggest you do the research yourself and read the many many horror stories of customers waiting well over a year for products they have paid a deposit on (myself included) without ever receiving a thing! It’s easy for a company to make promises on great products for low prices when they don’t actually do it! Colorado Tripod Company is a crappy company!

This is not that good a ball head for panos yes looks like a very good ball head but looks are not everything , First you have to make sure that your tripod is perfectly level otherwise this will not give you a good pano system. if you need a good ball head that is easy to set up regardless if your tripod is not level then have a look at this one. koolehaoda E3 Tripod Ball Head double Panoramic Head with Quick Release Plate For Camera Tripod

I’m currently using the Manfrotto befree backpack I think it’s just became discounted. I was looking into purchasing a new back as it’s not really working for me as padding is the strong point. I was looking at these mindshift bags but also the f-stop lotus, what ever I could get for the best money cause I’m only 15. Keep it up and I live in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 so that might be a problem if I was going to win

Oh, no… I’ve only had my BH-55 a few months, and now this. The BH-55 weighs almost 2lb (860g), so halving that weight and getting that extra range of motion would be wonderful. Also, they’re releasing a titanium version that weights only 295g. Ugh! But great video, Mark. And so you know, I certainly don’t take you for granted, either. Congratulations on another milestone. 👍😄🦘

An interesting design, slightly outside the box. I've been using Acratech for 10 years now, I mainly use the pano head, it does everything a ball head does and the advantage of being able to set the head level and move L-R and up/down has proven to be great for what I do. THe APSEN does seem to be a good fit for you. Cheers. PS Congratulations! the hard work is paying off!!

Hi Mark. Thank you for this superb review and comparison of these two fine ball heads! As a landscape, product and ocassional wildlife photographer, I always use a solid tripod, such as the robust Leofoto LS-365C and the LH40 ball head. For "travel" I am testing the 3LT Leo 2.0 with AirHed Pro Level ball head. The only thing I notice with the "Lever" type of Arca-Swiss clamp, is that when tight (no camera movement), the Lever clamp can still be wiggled slightly left-right or up/down. However, this movement does not affect the stability of the locked clamp. I've always used a "twist" screw lock, so perhaps I just need to get more used to the lever. That said the tripod itself seems rock solid, and has a load capacity of 66 lbs! Thanks again, Mark, and enjoy your Fuji GFX system!

Currently using a TARION backack. It is quite a cheap backpack from a Hong Kong based company, but looks good and for the price, around £60 or $85, but looks and feels premium. Good for mirroless cameras, but adding older DSLRs makes it kinda havy.

I have and love that RRS BH-40 ball head. I think the only difference between this and the BH-55 is the former's lever clamp vs. the latter's thumbscrew, which may be more secure but is slower to use. This new design is intriguing, but somehow I see all those holes becoming dirt magnets. I see the company offers a "standard" solid head version, but there is no way to pre-order it yet. There's also an upcoming solid titanium model for $599. If I were in the market, I would strongly consider this ball head with the solid aluminum ball option. My current bag is a LowePro Flipside 500 AWII. It's carries everything I need, and some stuff I don't (LOL - I need to downsize a little). As I'm migrating from Canon DSLRs to RF bodies and more compact RF lenses, I see myself eventually moving to a little smaller bag. But not yet.

Using an el' cheapo bag, not worth mentioning, though TBH, don't venture much further from my accommodations or car for a few reasons, besides just being lazy ... 😂 Present bag does hold 2 bodies (Sony APC-S) and long / short lens mounted, so all good there, with room to spare. Though test of time is using trekking, it would probably, eventually fail.

Very cool ball head! The flexibility of it has me intrigued! Thanks for sharing! I have been rocking an Osprey 24L hiking backpack with a Tenba BYOB insert. Congratulations on the 175k milestone. Thanks for the videos. I currently use a Lowepro backpack. Dunno the model or size. It came with a Nikon D90 that I bought used about 4 years ago for my daughter's birthday. She found the bag too large and gave it to me. I've only recently started using it myself as I have got more into photography again (take a look at my channel) and whilst it's good, it's not good enough for a day's hike so I was looking at at Mindshift bag for all kinds of reasons, including the apparent following they have amongst other KZbin photographers! I'm only just at about 250 subscribers, so a long way to catch you up!

A many many heartiest congratulation on the 175K subs milestone Mark. Hurray!!!!!!! A great new ball head in the market. One question though, I didn't see the bubble level though on the Colorado Ball Head. Is it missing Mark? I have been using my 26 ltr camera bag pack I bought in 2016 from Amazon (like about 120 bucks) named Altura Photo. It served me well till mid 2020. Till then I was using a Nikon D7200 with 11-16, 17-50 & 70-200 lens and Nisi's ND set along with a CPL. Now after upgrading to Nikon D780 along with 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 remained along with filter set for 14-24 completely over killing. Also the bigger tripod doesn't fit on the side as well. How often you did change your camera bag pack before switching completely into fulltime professional landscape photography?

Could carry two cameras; Sony a6300 w/kit lens and Pentax ME-F 35mm film camera w/50mm lens. Could hold extra film, extra batteries, mini tripod, lens wipes, wireless remote, my passport, and two bottles of water if I didn't mind looking like I had a little Blastoise around my waist. It got me around all of SE Asia and various islands in the pacific with no trouble. Cheers.

Congrats on the 175K+! My bag is an older Lowepro 350 AW ProTactic. I like it because it's fairly rugged and has been kicked around in the trunk and on the ground without totally falling apart. WOW, that seems like a wonderful ball head, would have LOVED having one, but $279 is still waaay too expensive for me. It’s sadly not in the cards for someone on disability/a fixed income who has photography as a hobby… Oh well, I’ll have to look on. I saw a low profile ball head with a ball around 55mm a while ago, but sadly I can’t remember the brand name and it seems like I lost it. It was $99, I think… I have to have a real ergonomic one, due to joint problems, and the knobs on that one weren’t too bad… Typical to lose it, hope I manage finding back to it… Oh well, thanks for a great video!!! 🤗

I have seen this ball head in the Colorado Tripod Company's site a couple of months ago when I was looking for a new Tripod. Unfortunately they don't send to Brazilian customers, so I had to give upon it. Currently own a Manfrotto Pro Light 3N1-26 PL which I don't like very much. Not that much comfortable. So, I'd love to have this Minds gift backpack. Congrats for the new level of subscribers. You do a very good job in your KZbin channel. Thanks for your time. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.

At the moment I'm using a 'standard' backpack, not a photography backpack. It works, but a 'real' camera-backpack would be nice (and easier)... ;-)

Great video and good information on another ball head option. I do mostly wildlife photography (Nikon D500) and always carry at least two lenses (one of them being the Tamron150-600 mm). I have only been doing this for a year or so but I love it!! To carry everything around, I bought a very inexpensive Neewer backpack. I'll be honest, it does the trick. Would I like a more comfortable/higher quality bag........ absolutely 😁

Great review of the Aspen ball head. I’m a RRS user now, but I’ve read some good things about the Colorado Tripod Company. I’m also a huge ThinkTank/Mindshift bag user. I’ve read great things about this new release, and am excited that you’re offering it! I use the ThinkTank Streetwalker bag now. Superb gear. Congratulations on your new subscriber milestone...well deserved, Mark!

Congrats on 175K. This channel will continue to grow, 👍🏻 I am actually looking for a camera backpack. As a backpacker I have a few packs but would like something specific for camera gear and enough room for an overnighter. I haven’t found a lot of “hybrid” packs yet.

I'm beginning to see a 'quantum step' in your vids. APS-C to Medium Format, RRS to Aspen. I'm okay with that. I think the Aspen will work well for me. Plus, it's sci-fi.

Thank you Mark for your considered review of this game changing ball head. I've currently got the Lowepro Flipside 400AW (mark 1 version) and I'd really like to upgrade it!! Cheers.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos; I always learn something..........some are head slappers. Most of my quick walks along beaches or local conservation land are supported by a Lowe Pro SlingShot 202 AW, which easily holds a Nikon Z6 with a few additional short zooms. When I flew in successively smaller and smaller planes on a trip into Manitoba, I used a Think Tank Elements backpack, not the quickest to use, but the safest of the choices guaranteed to fit Canadian carry-on requirements. Think Tank produces numerous well made bags. Congratulations on your growing fan base.

Been using a small Lowepro Protactic 250 for quite a long time now. Really great bag. Recently switched from an Olympus E-M1 to a Fuji X-T3. Kit is starting to swell. Also getting more and more into landscape photography, so the kit is growing! Bag upgrade is imminent!

I had the RRS BH-40 but I didn't like how stiff the lever was, I eventually sold it and I am now using the Arca Swiss monoball P0 which I love, the Aspen looks really interesting too though. My bag is a Think Tank urban approach 15.

I have been eyeing that Aspen ball head but my current one still works. However, if I win your camera backpack giveaway I might be able to fund the Aspen ball head. I currently have the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW II. Good luck to everyone!🤞🏼

Thanks for the opportunity to win that backpack. It's really nice. I'm currently using a small Lowepro that pretty much only holds my X-T3 with the 18-55 attached, extra batteries and an old Canon FD f1.8 manual lens with a X mount adapter. I'm looking to get a tripod as well. I have an old Promaster tripod that I bought in 1984 for my Ricoh XR-P film SLR. I have to see if I am able to just buy a head for it. If so, I'd get a Arca style head and then buy an L bracket for my X-T3. With an L bracket I could get away without having a ball head.

I am currently using the Colorado Tripod Company Highline Small Ball Head with my 2-Series and 4-Series Tripods from Colorado Tripod. All of the Colorado Tripod products are great. I can't wait to get the Aspen Ball Head. I currently use an Acratech Leveling Base for panos. My backpack is the F-stop Gear Tilopia and I'm very happy with it. Depending on my shooting situation, I use either the Small Pro, Medium Slope or Large Pro Internal Camera Units from F-stop.

Hi Mark, Another great video. I am currently using an old LowePro bag that my gear has outgrown. When planning a hike, I carefully select which lenses & accessories to pack but can't always fit larger lenses if carrying a large prime like the 85mm. Cheers from Belfast, ME.

Congrats on the 175K!! Interesting looking ball head. Im rolling with an old school Lowepro Pro Trekker 400 AW. Been looking at bags cause the zipper is busted and have nothing to carry the gear in to send off to have repaired. Great bag, just wish it was back entry.

Congratulation for the subscriber milestone. Keep it up, your channel has some very good advice for beginner or advanced photographer. I currently use a Vanguard VEO GM 42M for my MFT set. Sometimes it's small for my lens, which I carry to the field and never use. Do I need a new bag? Don't know, but the giveaway looks nice.

Lovely ball-head and it's got me interested but availability in the UK...? Well done on achieving the 175K - richly deserved and a great giveaway. Currently I'm using the Fstop 32L bag which is good but not so comfortable fully loaded because of the lack of shoulder strap padding. Thank you Mark for all the hard work.

I'm using the Shimoda Action X50 based in large part on your review - and it's awesome. I use it for all of my outdoor photography, hiking, and biking. Stores my camera gear, drone, and EDC stuff. But having a smaller bag for quick trips or street photography would be great. Love the channel.
