Im really dissapointed with those comments blaming Robin for talking about other brands than Olympus. As if he were some kind of heretic. Im really happy that Robin now is FREE to talk about his experience with other cameras and lenses than just Olympus. There is no single system solution which satisfies everything yet. I have a Sony A7riii which I think compliments my Olympus kit perfectly. For me,Olympus kit satisfies most of my requirements, but there are constraints in certain situations (low light, shallow depth of field etc) where the full frame camera is clearly the better choice. It's horses for courses, I am fortunate enough to be able to afford to choose, but if I had to have just one system it would be Olympus MFT. In my opinion Robin is perfectly right in his thinking, and it encourages me to see he has the similar views to my own.

I remember the camera back in the day and used it a friend’s studio . It was heavy and I could not see myself carrying it around . Heavens, I found the light and versatile Pentax D110 too heavy with the kit lens on my travels if I wore it all day. Much as I love the large format other cameras offer, versatility and easy of use has became my mantra and led me to MFT. I have had no regrets in arriving at that decision . Robin , I think it is invaluable reminder to younger and older photographers out there that some great affordable cameras are in reach of most people’s pocket books or wallets as we call them in the UK. If the urge grabs you to try a bigger camera to Olympus say, then look for a well looked after earlier camera from the stable you lust after and if you like it, then you have a very good pack up to go to when changing cameras. If mirrorless is your thing, then wait a while for newer models to appear and then grab a good copy of the desired camera to play with. But, whatever inspires us to try different kit, do it the intent to enjoy the craft of image making and do it affordably . Another great video Robin .

I have one 5D, I use it with Canon lenses and also with M42, I use the same M42 on my OMD1. What I love with OMD is the hability to have pseudo-telelens (as all lenses are x2), and when using for example the Tomioka 55 1.4, this fantastic lens becomes an amazing 110mm portrait lens. What I like with the FF, it the DOF and the fact lenses can be used at their original focal ratio. A 50mm "FF" is still OK at 100 but a 24mm FF is usualy a poor 48mm as the lens was designed to be a wide angle and not a standard focal. I think both world have pros and cons, MFT camera are smaller and easier to carry, especially for long telephoto shooting, a 400mm on an OMD is still "light" enough to be carried in a bag (OK a big bag ;) ) and it's possible to have a 800mm equivalent under 3kg. With Canon/Nikon FF, a 800mm needs to be the Rock or to use a solid tripod, and body+lens weight approx 7kg. Another issue I think with the FF camera is also DOF, sometimes too reduced in low light with 1.4 or 1.8 lenses, it often becomes nearly impossible to have all the subject in the field, OK ISO and speed could be adapted but working at f8 or f11 in low light situations with an old lens without IS is not really possibible with this mastodon camera. DOF is the strenght and the weakness of this camera. FF and smaller sensors are, imha, complemetary not enemies, and the sterile discussions about crop factor, noise or resolution are just useless as both have their pros and cons.

I used to own the 5D Mark II. Great images but with a good lens on it, that thing was so heavy, the shutter was so loud, the AF so bad outside of the center crosspoint that it pushed me towards M43. I get the appeal of FF but unless they make the good lenses significantly smaller I will never go back.

@@veganpotterthevegan I'm more of a prime guy. My favorite lenses on the Canon were Canon 100/f2.8 macro, 135/f2, Sigma 50/1.4 & Zeiss 35/f2. I replaced them with M43 Oly 17/f1.8, 25/f1.2, 60/f2.8 macro & 75/f1.8. the difference in size & weight is like night and day. For some reason mirrorless FF primes are actually getting bigger and heavier than on DSLRs, so I doubt there'll be something comparable to my M43 kit anytime soon.
@Lauren_C3 жыл бұрын
Fast lenses on FF isn’t easily possible outside wide angle. Crop Factor works against you here as longer lenses require larger diameter glass to maintain the same aperture value. A 35mm F2 lens only requires 17.5mm at it’s minimum diameter, while a 50mm lens requires 25mm minimum diameter to maintain F2. An APS-C sensor with a 35mm lens achieves the same field of view as Full Frame at 50mm, hence the need for Full Frame cameras to have larger lenses. Sony’s new 28-60mm, F3.5-5.6 kit lens is very small, and quite sharp. Coupled with the A7C, you’ve probably one of the smallest Full Frame setups around, though it probably would work a treat on the A7III as well. However, losing the fast lens hinders versatility somewhat. I use the A7C with a Rokinon 50mm F1.4, and while the lens obviously dwarfs the body, it’s manageable, and doesn’t require an especially large bag to store it while still assembled.

As i myself also use Olympus and Sony in parallel, i fully understand your purchase - to be honest i would be rather disappointed if you didn't. Your skills and visions on OM-D is of course more valuable if you have means of comparisons and experience beyond the E-M1 horizon. Only then you know what you're talking of. For sure i follow you because of the E-M1 context and i would still like to see your videos with that focus - now and then showing other brands will enrich your scope but should not broaden too much for the sake of trusted advisor. I am liking my Canon RP. Look for super deals which come about every couple of months. The new 50mm f1.8 lens is only $199 retail. The Canon lens ring can control the camera function of choosing. I have mine set to adjust the EV light value. The Fv shooting mode is unique to Canon. Images in JPG come out great without the need for much adjustments, in most cases. Weight, when used with 50mm is low, and with 24-105mm low-end kit lens, not too darn heavy. Not the bulk and weight of the past FF cameras. In the USA, I recommend Samy's Camera, Adorama, or B&H, unless you have a local store you are happy with. BestBuy also has some camera gear. -Loren

I have a Powershot Pro 1 from 2004 that my daughter uses now and the only issue I ever had was a bent CF pin. I had 2 Rebels: My XT was sold 3 years ago and was working perfect. My XTi had water spilled on it and quit working. I then got the 6D in 2014 and an 80D in 2016 and they were flawless. Maybe it's just the Facebook group I am on but there seem to be a lot of problems with many Olympus cameras--I am hopeful mine lasts like my Canons did. I think photographers have to realize that you do not need the latest, and greatest. There are a lot of great older Dslrs out there on the market, and lets face it glass is the most important for image quality. Older glass is also very good when you know what you are looking for. I enjoy your program very much, and because of your vids I have purchased a OMD EM1 with the 12-40 f2.8 Pro lens. Amazing combo, sharp images, super fast Af. I have an Olympus E-PL7, and used it with various vintage lens + focal reducer. I love the camera. It has helped me develop my event photography business early on. In the Los Angeles/Hollywood event scene, it allowed me to have some "unique" looking photos that I was able to get a pretty good following among the local social media celeb/influencers. But, every time I have the urge to buy the 45mm f1.2 or the 25mm f1.2 Olympus Pro lens, visually, they are only equivalent only as 90mm f2.4 and 50mm 2.4 respectively on a full frame. Canon has a great 85mm 1.8 and 50 f1.8 (used here) that can be had for cheap.

Hi Robin glad to see you in 2021 posting. I did think Why Robin Why? But you answered that in video, you made good points on Canon known for how people like the color of their photos, plus a good layout of its buttons, I assume there is no video back then, but the price you paid seem rightful the image quality and the many choices of Canon lenses to choose from. Myself before I switched to the Olympus OM-D, I was using Sony SLT A-55 and vintage Minolta Maxim AF lenses. The reason Sony over Canon or Nikon was due to the fact Sony was making most of the camera sensors for the other camera companies. The Sony I have has shoots both stills and videos, has a lot of advance features built into its software, no DSLR issues at viewing the image, great vintage and Sony lenses that AF, jpegs, raw and video and feels good in the hands when shooting. For a pocket camera I use a Nikon Coolpix 56500 with a 12x zoom for street shooting. Goes to show you don't need to break the bank in getting the latest and greatest camera gear to take great photos there is still useful used gear at reasonable prices.

All these reviewers and forum trolls out there telling everyone they should be buying the latest greatest cameras have had me worried for a while. I feel they're contributing to the decline in photography. They're putting new photographers off because they can't afford to buy the new gear or because they are ridiculed for having older gear or for asking questions. New photographers don't need the latest greatest gear, they need gear that's comfortable to handle easy to learn on and cheap on the wallet. They also need people willing to answer their questions and support them as they learn. Support and encouragement are very important and you supply loads of it here Robin :)

Hi Robin, I'm excited to see you excited about other cameras! Apart from my Oly & arsenal of nice M43 glass I too bought a second hand cheap but fully functional 5D MkII & the 50mm f1.8 to submerge myself in the FF realm of great ISO performance, shallow DOF, great ergonomics & OVF (the good & the bad). Totally coincide with your likes & dislikes. I really enjoy the 5Dii when I don't need IS, love the colours & rendering in general & the RAW files give nice latitude being FF even from that old sensor. I'll enjoy my cameras even more now that I know we share them:-) Great sample pics BTW! Enjoy your FREEDOM

you actually motivated me to pull out my old Nikon D70, charge up the battery. I was shocked at how bad the viewfinder is LOL ... no EVF. BUT ! I stuck on a 35mm and went out to take some pictures. Yes , it was fun and I really noticed just how far I've come since I bought that camera about 15 years ago. Thanks for putting it into my head.

Great to see you having fun with some old tech Robin. Proving again it's the skill of the photographer that matters more than the equipment. Stay safe.

I assume youre a tall guy. That full frame looks a little bit small to you. I am getting one soon. Absolutely love the colors.

Great body, and dirt cheap nowadays! Even the resolution while miniscule by 2022 standards is still more than enough for most uses unless you need to crop a lot.

I have Nikon too, nobody is tied to a certain brand, cameras are tools, I use the Nikon DF to augment my low light photography, especially Astro. Still, my main cameras are my beloved EM1X’s!!! You go Robin!!!!! P.S. I am currently bidding on the Nikon AF NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR Lens, can you imagine this on my EM1X, that would be 160-800 f9 - f11 I think, what a moon shooter, and at only about $400, what a steal, it has VR too 😊 Mainly it will be for wildlife on the Nikon DF. I am considering the Nikon D750, as I have a plethora of AF-D lenses. I also shoot the Nikon F4, Olympus OM2SP, and the Minolta XD-11. Many consider me a heathen, so a heretic is not a stretch for me 😊 I just love photography in any way shape or form!

my first camera was olympus e300 but now i have 3 canon dslr and i'm very satisfied with it, 2 crop sensor and 1 full frame. my biggest disappointment with olympus is when they abandoned the four third system and came out with micro 4/3 which their new lenses cannot be mounted on my olympus e300

I bought a Canon 5d2. Did spend a little more, but it's great. Can connect to OBS through USB. Good choice on the f1.8 50mm lens.

Hi Robin, it's such a good review. Yes, the 5D classic can be bought cheap nowadays and it can be a good sidekick of MFT cameras. Like you, I am more into the photography side of things so the camera model doesn't really bother me. I used to shoot 35mm Pentax but now I shoot with Panasonic MFT and the GM5 is always with me whenever I go out. I don't mind shooting with the 5D classic. In fact, I am a fan of things that last. It's built like a tank and it's a good tool for such "nostalgic" shooting feeling. Cheers.

great video - I was wondering about these older FF Cameras, thanks for the review - keep them coming!!! Was thinking of getting one for my first FF, because of this video - may get one now...

The 5D has no auto ISO, no live view, no video, only about 9 focus points and an awful LCD. But it has a very simple menu, a satisfying "chunk" when the shutter fires, and a joystick to move the focus point. And is a lot of fun to use! It is a the digital camera most similar to a film camera.I don't expect to sell mine ever.
