I bumped into Eric once outside the coffee shop I used to run in South London. Somehow I managed the courage to go up to him and say hi, fully expecting he'd politely brush me off and walk away. To my astonishment he stopped and took five minutes to talk to me. Eric Clapton..... I did invite him to come and join one of our Sunday jazz acoustic jams we used to have in the coffee shop. He respectfully declined, but gave me a one in a lifetime experience nevertheless. What an inspiration the man is.

I'm an old guy now and look back far more than forward. Eric's music was one of the touch stones throughout my life. Your enthusiasm and excitement was so genuine I was able to feel it and I thank you for that. Over the years Eric has been over taken by players who are 'technically' better but that was never what he or his music was about. IMO he did for guitarists what the Beatles did for music. He became the standard for many of the best modern players and his music always relevant. His playing was about the song and bringing it to life with feeling and emotion not showing off runs and his technical ability. He always gave credit to those before him and was always willing to help others move forward in their careers. His music was always evolving and thankfully will remain for many generations to come. Glad to see someone as skilled as you are moved by him as his music as those of us who are not. Thanks for the brief yet meaningful experience

My most surprising guitar legend meeting… I went to see BB king back in the 90s at a large stadium in Birmingham (UK). Got there really early and was the first person in the venue with my wife. Couple of guys setting up mulling around. I sat head down reading the programme and my wife starts chatting to what I thought was a roadie - I looked up and it was only Peter Green..!! He was supporting BB. I was star struck and didn’t know what to say and she just yakked on totally oblivious to who he was. Spent easily 10mins with us, asking where we were from, where we were staying and so on really nice and charming chap, how I wish I could replay that chat now 😅

I was just in London in May...my wife and I specifically planned our trip to London to see Clapton at the Albert Hall on one of the four straight dates he played there this past May. A bucket list concert to see one of my guitar heroes at the venue that he has played well over 200 times now in his career ( I believe the night we saw him was number 212!!). Seeing him again next month in my home country at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. As a guitar player myself, letting up on the neck is one of my biggest challenges - I just want to mash down on that fretboard. That was a great lesson you gleaned from watching him play.

Clapton is God, I was lucky enough to see Eric at each of the different shows during the 24 nights at the Royal Albert Hall, and subsequent nights following years, then later whilst working at the original Wembley Stadium as a steel erector during the sound check for his gig with Elton John simply stunning. Great story! Clapton is the finest at what he does, it´s all about the details, his timing, his phrasing, his bends that are always, always in tune! And the vibrato, the "Thumb off the back of the neck completly controlled deep vibrato" that he has. That´s the "Blind Faith Tele" a Tele Custom with at Strat neck Eric played in Hyde park and on tour with Blind Faith, with the neck from "Brownie".

I was in 7th grade in 1967. That was the year I discovered Eric Clapton and Cream. He's been my favorite guitar player ever since. I've been to two of his concerts but I've never met him. He's become the man I always thought he was. I'd been trying to teach myself guitar since I was 9 years old and I got pretty good, but it wasn't until the mid 80s that I finally figured out how to play a proper vibrato. I grew up watching Clapton's style which is similar to many other greats. But I don't have Eric's fingers nor his experience, or his chops for that matter. But quite by accident I figured out how to do it with the fingers God gave me. I'm 70 years old now and still cannot do vibrato Eric's style. He is the master. But my chops became immensely better now that I could do vibrato, a very good sounding vibrato, it just doesn't look anything like the way Eric does it. Eric Clapton is not God, but he's the next best thing to a guitar god. Thank you for sharing this story.

Ok im going to go rewatch that one now, and yes as an srv geek i agree vibrato takes way longer to get than scales, it comes very slowly, so that for a decade you might be close, but one day it's right there, it's a matter of practicing different types in between runs, so that's part of the muscle memory, especially the 2 step bend to a different string vibrato instantly ss soon as your finger touches it, like the famous sky is crying licks that took me forever. At first you think ill get this in a week, then you realize if you don't do it daily you can't do it with that timing.

Surviving many of his era: Hendrix, SRV, Cale, Harrison, Beck, Mayall. I know he wasn’t always a stellar human being. He’s obviously had his demons to conquer and regrets to live with - as we all do. I am no exception. There but by the grace of God go I. Was amazing to me to hear him pay tribute to Mayall and reflect on where he was at as a young man at the time Mayall took him in.
