Nico Robin’s voice actress is Yuriko Yamaguchi, but Koinatsu Oiran’s VA is Chiwa Saito. The “wa” in “Wa no hen” (the “Arc of Wa”) refers to Japan, as it’s an alternate or ancient term for the country of Japan. It means “peace” or “harmony.” An Oiran was the top courtesan in the world of prostitutes (yujo), and she didn’t necessarily always sleep with her clients. She often entertained them with her artistic abilities, such as dance, music, conversation, etc., and it cost a fortune to meet with an oiran. Geisha, on the other hand, were like a cheap alternate to the oiran; they were not prostitutes (although some may have sold their bodies for money), but pure entertainers. The ones with white makeup are called “maiko,” who are geisha in training. It’s unlikely that the little girls (the oiran’s attendants) that are in the House that Tanjiro is at are demons, because Tanjiro would have been able to smell that they were demons. Remember that he, Zenitsu, and Inosuke have super sensory abilities. I’m sure Uzui Tengen should be able to tell also; he saw Koinatsu Oiran’s procession, and should have been able to detect if she or any of her attendants were demons.

Geisha and Oiran are different things. A geisha is like a performer. Courtesans and prostitutes are like the finest prostitutes. It was said that in order to drink tea with the highest-ranking courtesans, you needed to be able to buy a castle.

You're close. Courtesans were lower class prostitutes. Oiran were the high class.

@@TotalContemplation Sorry, I'm not sure how accurate the translation is because I'm using a translation app. I know about yujo because I'm Japanese and learned about it in Japanese history. The highest-ranking yujo is called oiran and the lowest-ranking yujo is called yotaka. My comment was just a simple explanation of the difference between geisha/maiko and yujo. Many people overseas don't know the difference 💦

@kokono4524 hi. Thank you for your response. So, in English, the word "cortesan" is used for low-class prostitutes. I appreciate the language barrier. So, yes, when speaking about Japanese history in English, the word "cortesan" would equate to your word for "low-class prostitute".

Courtesan/Oiran is basically the same thing. The top of their relative sex industries. These women in some cases had ALOT of power and money. The equivalent of our societies of today would be... the top 1% of onlyfans or the dubai instagram "models" or the pron stars. Except in the past they had to be talented enough to be recognized in "high" society. Now with the internet it is MUCH easier to target a bigger audience of easly satisfied people and you get Alot of money and power.

geishas and oirans are different! a geisha is more of a performative artist. an oiran is a very high class escort!

Putting the nail in the coffin?

Yes, it's a saying, basically to make things worse. Like they're already in a coffin and now they're nailing it shut. Or at least that's what I think of when I use it 😅 💞-Shirlay
