Gen Con was my first time playing miniatures in a competition. I played in the national Blood Bowl turniment and won a trophy.... For last place. But I had a blast and everyone I met (including Adam!) could not have been any nicer!

I am really excited for Halo Flashpoint. I would love to see some single player/co-op narrative added to it. The models in Wasteland Warfare were resin for those that didn't come in the core box. Surprised to see on sprue plastics.

17:48 Adam, it was nice to meet you and chat a little at Gencon. The Ironwind Metals booth has, in addition to Battletech and Ral Partha Fantasy, a number of other lines including Cross Electric, X-marx, and Deathray designs. The Solar shift products are a set of Battletech adjacent products Deathray manufactures. Personally, I like the unarmored infantry in that line. Some of the vehicles are also nice equivalents to Battletech vehicles like the missile carriers.

Solar Shift is just DRD’s generic 6mm sci-fi line. If you look at the mechs in the line you see a bunch of design elements that eventually made their way into Steel Rift.

Great loot (especially pocket flask for fluids 😊). Deth Wizards came to me last week - reading it slowly and I enjoy the book. My daughter saw what I'm doing and we had the following conversation: - Ooooooooooooooo will we play it? Will we play it? - No, this game is too scary for you. It's about bad wizards who lead lots of monsters. - But I want to be a bad wizard and have monsters. Now apart from reading the book, I'll have to design the rules to be family friendly and accessible for 4 years old...

Sorry to hear the 'vid got you. GenCon was for such a super-spreader event this year. You're the fourth person on my socials who got it. Well, who got it and told us. Dunno how many more suffered in silence. I was tired for three months after I had 'vid. I gave my body the sleep it was asking for, and am glad I did. I stopped being tired, and the last of the brain fog faded when the tiredness healed. For me, at least, the tiredness was my body saying straight out what it needed in order to heal.

Happy to see you doing better. I went to my first Gencon in 2015 blind. I spend all 4 of my days walking the dealer hall. I saw something new each day and was never bored. The pain my wallet felt led me make sure to sign up for many events next time.

My wife and I went to Gen Con for the first time and it was a lot of fun. Spent most of our time in the dealer hall, had to take lots of breaks. The amount of people was crazy and started to drive me nuts over a period of time. Really enjoyed it. Just wish they had more miniature stuff. Not a big board game person. Glad you are feeling better!

Yes ghq micro armor at 1/285 is king when you see their stuff with the aircraft your jaw will hit the ground. The detail scalec and fidelity is insaine. Your eyes just go yep thats real.

7:45 there was a giant Dice spill my first year. I just remember dice crashing against the walls and overtaking crowds of people running. There was one guy screaming out "WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DICE?!" Unfortunately, I don't think he made it out. I've tried looking for news on it, but it was completely swept under the rug by Big Dice

In case you haven't opened the packs up yet, the Premium BattleTech minis often come with alternate parts as well, usually two pairs of arms and legs in different poses so you have a lot of posing options.

I was happy to run into you! I went to gencon out of inertia in some ways. That said, I didn’t bring a single model or army. I wound up playing DnD Onslaught which is a fun enough skirmish game. I went to pick up HALO Flashpoint because like you I enjoy the concept of Deadzone (i have a 1e starter) but never played. In a hobby miracle my set is already painted. I feel gencon is less and less a convention for minis wargamers. I was there picking up the book with the story I wrote in it, and that’s for a minis wargame, and we didn’t have a booth. Basically it feels like if it isn’t LVO, NOVA or Adepticon the minis games aren’t there. (And I know AMG supported LEGION and Shatterpoint tourneys, but there wasn’t a single 40k or Killteam game that wasn’t a learn to play…)

20:00 YES! I will never understand where the cultural learning failed in this- if you're on a bike path and need to adjust your bike seat, you PULL OVER. If you're on the highway and need to get something out of the trunk, you PULL OVER. But you go to GenCon and everyone thinks the middle of the aisle is some sort of gathering place. My only negative critique of the whole event 😅 Glad you're feeling better!

I find using regular brown cardboard as pallet works great for dry brushing however it does absorb the paint.

Glad you are feeling better!! Bringing home 'con crud' is always a fear of mine, but now COVID makes it a real gamble. As to the missing tiny dice, did you perhaps give them to your wife? I know full well when I buy tiny dice (or any cool dice) that there is a tax on them and make sure I get enough to pay said tax. ;) And my wife knows that runs both ways.

Death Ray Designs makes some great stuff. Their Solar Shift line is full of excellent proxies for Battletech in particular. I use their Deimos tanks for Manticores and have a pair of one of their aerospace fighters that I use as Corsairs. Those pre-printed bases might be exactly what I need to invest in. I hate basing models, it's tedious and I feel like adds nothing of real value, so maybe that's what I need to look into (or buy resin bases again). Great haul, Adam, and I'm excited to see how that Halo set ends up looking!

GenCon has 500 vendors in the hall and is a four-day event. So you can see 100 vendors a day and still miss 100 vendors.

I'm really tempted by Fallout: Factions.... Wasteland Warfare was a bit much... but there are free rules for using MOST (not all, but MOST) of your Fallout Wasteland models in "beta lists" for Fallout: Factions and then there are 3 current gangs (in plastic) for this version... and yeah, d10 bases, neat activation system, and lots and lots of customability to those figures...

Been going to Gen Con for twenty years now, but this year definitely felt kinda like the low point for miniatures. I really miss the days of the late Oughties when there were so many small mini companies there with odd and fun minis to peruse. The only miniatures I really got excited about this year was Full Tilt at the TTCombat booth, as soon as I saw 'halfling jousting' I knew I had to have it. I also brought home the non-COVID con crud, and it sure seems like a lot of other people were bringing home an unwelcome passenger as well. Worse than the last few years, anyway, but there's no way they'll go back to a mask mandate at Gen Con, I don't think.
