My friend, I have been impersonating Ace for almost 20 years here in America. Although most have been very complimentary of my sound, as all great enthusiasts are, I still am chasing that tone of the early KISS. You absolutely nailed this tone. It is so clear and crisp and true to that era. I wish I could give that a spin, it sounds great. Great job!

Fantastic KISS Alive! tone, Johan! Man, what an elusive sound, right? I did speak with Eddie Kramer once at NAMM about KISS Alive! tone and he said for the live recording he just stuck a 57 (most likely...) in front of each of Paul and Ace's 4x12's and then when they overdubbed at Electric Lady they just brought in one half stack. Those would have been the '73 Superleads and accompanying cab which would have had greenbacks in them. Although there was a lot going on I doubt he remembers 100%. Ace would have had Super Distortions in his tobacco burst Deluxe then, and Paul had that L6S but a lot of it was with the Gibson V. I don't have any other information but that's what Eddie said about the amps. Funny how hard it is to get that exact tone, right? And it's my favorite of all time too!
@@JohanSegeborn You got it, Johan! It was fun to talk with Eddie. Totally elusive, yet all of the photos and talk point to just Marshall, Les Paul, 57. Crazy how it was so unique. BTW, I need to ask you about that blackface Bassman you have. Let's take it offline about the mods! I love that amp!

Cool vid! The 1975 KISS live album pretty much pushed me in the direction I ended up going with guitar playing for the rest of my life. That KISS tone isn't easily found, but I think you got it! It was a bold and unexpected move to try using Jensen speakers in your quest. I can get pretty close playing thru either a '72 Super Lead, an '89 2210 or a newer DSL100 pushed with the distortion side of a Fulltone GT500 and a lot of tweaking. I always use "Strutter" or "She" as my KISS-tone test song.

Don't forget it takes 4 hours to WARM UP your compact Disc player before it plays the true sound. Vinyl record will play a true to the original type of sound straight from a cold amplifier. We now know, it takes 4 hours to get a 4K DVD player to warm up. It also implies a CD 💿 also requires a long warm up time before the true KISS alive sound appears out of your speakers from a compact Disc player.

Indeed, this tone is very close to the tone on Alive! The tone is more open sounding than before or after the live record. Personally I prefer the guitar tone from the ‘74 bootlegs, which is almost certainly the Greenback speaker, and the ‘76 bootlegs which I think could be Blackbacks. I think there’s good tonal evidence that by ‘77 (including the Tokyo show) that Blackbacks were used throughout the rest of the decade.

Very good sound with the Jensens! Reminds me a lot of Cities On Flame With Rock 'n' Roll - BOC. Ace has said that he had some sort of Fender combo under the stage. Sometimes Marshall amps sound better with other than Celestion speakers. I once had a great sound in a guitar shop with a TSL 100 head into a Krank 4x12 with Eminence 1258 speakers. And, for a plus, the sound was big and loud but not deafening. The Jensens give you the sound but your ears don't pop, is that the case? Cheers!

Nice copyright variations Johan!! Lol I had heard a long time ago that Ace in the studio was somehow combining small Fenders with the Marshall. Maybe even slaving Fenders into Marshall’s in someway. This may have been for lead tones only but not sure. Ace’s lead tone in the 70’s was incredible and his rhythm tone always had the meat live. There’s electric guitar and then there’s guitar that sounds electric. Ace had the former going on.
