It is called IRUKERE in Yoruba language, ODUEFI in Igbo language and wutsiyar doki in Hausa language. It is a traditional (tanned) cow/horse tail, which signifies MAJESTY, POWER & BLESSING. With a pure heart, whoever you rest the IRUKERE on his/her shoulder and pronounce any anything (blessing please 😁 ), such words stands.. So hold it with pride and authority as a Queen you've become. Happy married life IYAWO.

These sort of beads are Kalabari/ijaw/Bini basically southern most parts of Nigeria. Not Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa. Although in recent times Igbos especially have started appropriating it. Those beads (ijaw/Kalabari) people get it from the ocean which is very close to us and it's usually difficult to get, you have to dive really deep to get it, that's why it's valuable and expensive to us and used as status symbol. It is worn especially for ceremonies and special occasions.
@dianalove20142 жыл бұрын
How did igbos appropriate this edo dressing? Maybe the igbos in Edo state
@billinuma80782 жыл бұрын
@@dianalove2014 There are no Igbos in Edo state. The disrespect for ethnicity in the creation of states and regions forced certain groups to be minorities amongst Igbos in Anambra and Imo state most especially. The current Igbo obsession with beads has its roots in Nollywood's fictional movies. Nolly wood since the 90s has used those beads which's origin Biobele has discussed, the make-up in those movies are a combination of traditional Ijaw, Efik, and Fulani make-ups (The black lips is Fulani ). The dots are Efik traditionally done in white colour. The Ijaw depiction would be in yellow and black with certain lines or images drawn on the body. That is where the current obsession of young Igbos who were influenced by those movies comes from.
@billinuma80782 жыл бұрын
You packed so much information in such a short comment, God bless you.
@dianalove20142 жыл бұрын
@@billinuma8078 there are igbos in Edo state please. I once had an igbo friend from Edo state.. when her sisters wedded traditionally, they pulled off the typical Edo attires with the kerchiefs to cover their nose etc. guess her name, Chizaram Igwe ..
@Biobele2 жыл бұрын
@@billinuma8078 very well said, Nollywood really mixed up lots of things and many people copy it like that all mixed up. Igbos have never really been known for beads and Nollywood isn't known for historical accuracy or attention to detail, also in Nollywood most movies with village scenes are set in Igbo land, the language spoken is usually Igbo so when people see those characters in those costumes speaking Igbo they assume whatever they see on them is Igbo attire. I've seen bridal pictures where the bride wore Kalabari female beaded cap + Efik hairstyle + makeup from somewhere else and wrapper from somewhere else and many of them will say it's Yoruba or Igbo attire simple because those are the only tribes they know or because one of the persons getting married is Yoruba or Igbo. Your comment is very apt.

Do you guys only have one traditional attires or several?
