The Berlingo is so French it doesn’t care what any of us may think! For a French design it’s very understated, I got to say I do like it. My daughter studied for a year in Argentina and told me though they speak Spanish, they want to be French so badily, the French cars were everywhere the Berlingo was very popular there. Her first taxi ride there was in a Berlingo diesel with a manual transmission and a heavy smoking very animated driver that battled Buenos Aries traffic quite bravely and enthusiastically ringing every horsepower out of the tiny diesel engine while shifting blowing the horn smoking and communicating with other drivers with a torrent of sign language! We were so glad to get her home safe!

I owned a Citroen ZX Avantage 3 door with the same engine from new in 1993 to 2007 and personally drove it 248k miles, the engine never developed any faults in that time.

Lived in France for 15 years. Returned to UK in 2015. Big mistake. The 1900 cc engine is common in a number of Citröen vehicles and the average rural Frenchman swore by their reliability and often treated them badly.

I can confirm the practicality of the Berlingo, I've had my 2012 1.6 diesel for 10 years. With the back seat down it can tackle jobs where you'd otherwise have to hire a van. If i sold it today I could recoup a large percentage of the £8000 I paid for it. Only I wont ever let it go.

I had a 1999 Berlingo I bought for £500 as a stop gap and but kept it for years. It was so practical great for walking the dogs and transporting the mountain bikes without removing any wheels. Mine had the vinyl electric roof so it was a proper mobile skip in the summer! I secrectly have a look at Berlingos on autotrader every now and then🤣.

My parents had one of the first ones, it lasted over a decade, over 300000km in calendula red. It got loaded with literal tons of stones, 5 dogs at once and done multiple 1000km+ trips. Very good cars... Oh also me and my sister we had Plenty of space to play in the floor of the seats while driving

I have always liked the Berlingo, it is a great family load lugged, so versatile. I am a really looking forward to the Rome trip. We have had a couple of Citroen ZX’s, both none turbo, they were great cars and I got good money for them when I moved them on. I also serviced them myself since they were so easy to do, saving a mint on dealer service costs! Cars are too complicated now🤔

I had a 92 Peugot 405 GLD estate with same engine in it. It was driven hard for 300k ...oil changed every 5k and never let me down. At every mot the emissions were at the lowest level. 30 years ago I was in my mid twenties and the plate ended in Gus....it was affectionately known as gusset 😂😂

It was used as a camper van, that is why, Matt, very common to do. Great car, very practical, generally reliable, and will go on forever at low cost and take your family, bike, dog, elephant without fuss. You know you are safe when you choose a car like this, noone will ever steal it. Manual everything- less to go wrong. 20+ years old- it is the way to save the planet. Great car. Other thought, perhaps, given your enjoyment of this you should have chosen a FIAT Qubo for a trip to Italy. BTW Might be worth rethinking the Himmler haircut (Google images) styling, even though it is very fashionable.

Love Berlingos. I had one of those Mk1 M49s for 15 years. Never let me down, just a broken clutch cable. Used it for work, leisure, back and forward to Ireland. Mine was a 1.6 petrol so a bit more lively. It was great. Now got a later Berlingo like the one in your video from a few months back. Really looking forward to all your updates with this.

Another great video, enjoyed watching it! I've had a battered Citroen C25 once, same engine, Berlingo's predecessor - loved it. Guy I bought it of didn't look after it at all, was running it on fresh cooking oil as it was cheaper than diesel, so it smelled like a chip shop anywhere it went, try that :) - never had an issue with that little van. Had a few Berlingos (1.9D, 2.0 HDi), but whatever people say - Berlingos, Xsara PIcassos - you could not kill them. They are simple and run forever, never had serious electrical problems like on any VAG car all the time, or sensor / timing issues on BMWs - they just run. Had about a dozen of cheap, abused Picassos 2.0 HDi, never had any problems with them and that has always been my failsafe backup car. As it goes - ended up having a Berlingo B9 now, was planning to sell it, but since I've managed to get it sorted, I find I use it more than the T4, Superb and few others - loads od space, good seating position, hardly using fuel and the sliding doors are great. This one's automatic, which isn't the best, but does the job and it's the cheapest to run automatic I've ever had. Perfect around town, once even helped a mate to pick up a broken down Suzuki Burgman - after a quick seat reconfiguration it just went in and we took it down to the repair shop. Not many cars can do that. And the seats in the back are all separate, same size seats, again, not many cars have that option, middle seat is always like an afterthought.

I owned an old '93 ZX estate with the exact same engine. I sold it to a young lady for just pennies. The car had north of 500k kilometres on the clock and no problems at all. This engine is a real peach. It can probably run for another 20 years and will not miss a beat.

One of the most underated cars on the market. I am on my 5th Berlingo multispace now. The one i have now is a year 2000 1.9 non turbo. Flat as a fart but totally reliable. I bought it 2 years ago with just 39000 on the clock. I have done 20,000 so far without any issues. I have to say tho, the 2.0 HDI is the best. Ive had 4 Citroens with that engine with no issues. Low revving and economical. That Berlingo you have bought will cruise all the way to Rome at a steady 60 mph and back and not miss a beat

It's amazing to see so many positive reactions towards this Berlingo! I myself drive a 2012 Fiat Doblo Passenger van. Have to say it is really good. 1.4 Turbo petrol chipped to about 130BHP, 6 speed manual, airco with auto climate control, electric windows all of them, armrest, heated seats upfront. Did you know the Doblo has actually the most room inside of this type of car? (Berlingo, Caddy, Kangoo) Also it is certified to be loaden to a 1000 kg which is a great deal more than the others which have a capacity of around 650 kg. I'm looking forward to your next Berlingo upload!s

I have its sister car the Peugeot Partner. Identical to the Berlingo apart from badges and a few trim details. Had it from new and it's just clicked over the 440,000km mark - 275,000 miles. It's a 2006 model so the newer dash and 1.6HDi 90 DOHC engine. Yes, it did blow a turbo at around 200,000km but it was a lot cheaper to replace at €1,000 than a replacement car and it's been fine ever since. All due to carbon buildup in the oil pickup gauze, according to my mechanic. Otherwise I've done most of its servicing myself and its generally an easy car to work on. Very frugal - tested it the other day and it still gets 5l/100km (56mpg) - same as when new. And it's a lot more refined than the 1.9 and with much better pickup. Very drivable engine and much better than its 2.0HDi predecessor. It's been brilliant. Perfect for everything we do - family when the kids were still at home, school, shopping, camping, skiing, mountain biking, trips to the UK, Spain, Portugal, all over Europe. We have a place in the high Pyrenees which we go to regularly so we do a lot of that. And my wife's a fencing instructor so loads up the car with sabres, epées, foils and masks most days. Bought a fridge freezer for our daughter last weekend. Loaded it straight into the back and drove it across the country to Lyon. It's taken washing machines and dishwashers upright so not having to worry about dodgy sometime-between-9am-and-6pm deliveries. Because it's essentially a van, a lot of the components are more robust than a normal car. I've never had to change any shocks, suspension or steering components - all original. It did fail its controle technique (French equivalent of the MOT) 18 months ago and needed a new DPF. But it's started smoking a little again on hard acceleration so might fail again later this year. Still it'll probably be worth trying to fix it rather than scrapping it. As long as it remains reliable. Have had my eye on the Rifter as a direct replacement for the last few years but this one refuses to die! Long may it continue.

Hi Matt I’m a long time watcher of your videos, two years ago I bought a 2006 Peugeot partner (same as the berlingo) escapade to convert into a micro camper, I drove to South Wales from West Yorkshire to collect her and fell in love with her instantly, her name is Patricia and over the last two years she has taken me my partner and our dog allover the country. Patricia is lovely to drive and never let me down, a few weeks ago there was a drain with the cover missing and it broke her steering rack and a few other parts, I had the option of spending 1000 pound to fix her or to let her go, I chose to spend half of what she is worth and keep her, she is mechanically sound and always passes her MOT’s with no advisories, thanks to watching you I decided to spend the money so we can have more adventures 🥰

I had one with a full size sunroof. Just push the button for twelve seconds and the roof was gone. I used to drive from the uk to the south of France regularly. It was great. It was a 2 litre and went very well.

I have a Cayenne, Xc90, V70 and my favourite which is my '04 Peugeot Partner 2.0Hdi. Its the Escapade model so it has 30mm higher suspension than a Berlingo, big steel bash plate underneath and light guards. It's stage1 remapped to 130bhp so goes well but still does 50+ mpg. Parts are dirt cheap, it's easy to work on and most importantly the dog prefers it out of all our cars!

I think it’s great. I’m looking at one myself. They’re getting more expensive where I live in France, though. There’s one near where I live. A Multispace with glass panels in the roof, 1.6i petrol from Sep ‘05 with 158k km. Very clean and tidy. Also has a tow bar, central locking, electric windows and A/C. €5990 from a dealer with a 6-month engine & gearbox warranty. I’m finding that expensive…

I had a 2.0 HDI van for a long time, before that two 1.9D vans and now still a 2.0HDI Romahome. The red 2.0HDI was great, I had it on white 106 Rallye rims. I also briefly had a same era Partner with a 1.6 16v petrol but that was not nearly as pleasant as the Diesel vans, despite being the car version. Enjoy your Berlingo!

Love a Berlingo. I had the 110bhp 1.6 petrol which had no problem keeping up with traffic, although it was a little thirsty. That 1.9 is super reliable (coolant leak excepted), and will do galactic mileage on a tank of fuel. Ideal car for lugging stuff around.

I have the Peugeot expert with the exact same DW8 engine, "Plodder" as I call it. It is painfully slow pulling out into traffic but once its going its brilliant. Engine is pretty much bullet proof, regular oil changes and it will run forever. Mine regularly does a 900 mile round trip run to Cornwall and back, even gets around 42mpg on the run at a steady 65mph.

My 25 year old Berlingo van is still going strong. Owned it for 17 years. It sometimes sits for a month at a time but always starts instantly. 1.9 DW8 engine will go on forever if you change the oil often. Who cares what the 0-60 time is.

i had the peugeot partner van 1.9 non turbo of these ( same thing ) it was so reliable however if it starts to overheat and it turns out to be the thermostat housing which is at the rear of the engine its not a cheap job to fix unless you can do it yourself. yes its slow and basic but they are oddly fun, i changed the steering wheel to a 206 gti, was 20 quid on ebay with airbag. and took 10 minutes to swap out.

I had a 2008 model 1 X- Ray with glassroof and ekstra storage 1,6 HdI. Really a nice car. After a period with Kia Ceed and Renault Megane 3, i bought a 2009 model 2, 1,6 Hdi and turned it into a Campervan. Really happy to have a Berlingo again.

I have a 2007 Argentinian Partner Patagónica. Same color, same engine, 80.000 miles on it. That 1.9 might be slow, but it's as robust as it gets when taken care. You can cruise at 80 mph everywhere and do 7 l/100km (I don't know how many UK mpg it is, but I bet it's more than 50). It can be basic in terms of comfort features, but the suspension swallows every pot hole without feeling it and you can do 1000 miles on those seats without any pain in the back. In front and in the back seats. That thing is a great adventurer

Had this engine in a Pug 206, as a school car. Solid, reliable, and 49mpg however you drove it. Not quick, but would exceed the speed limit by a considerable margin. Had a Mk II Berlingo as a works van. Never a problem in 4 years stop-start driving.

Had 205 XRAD as my first car, as a rep. Loved that thing. Moved on to Berlingo straight diesels. VERY comfortable seats in the Berlingo! 😂 Glad you started off with French car Matt. They acan be infuriating and flawed, eg RCZ driving position or dash in the 406 Coupé but they're often genius cars. Had 3 Xantias privately. All to 250k miles and sold on and lived a lot longer. 1.9td sx driven back to Offaly, Ireland from a London auction. Beaut of a car at the time. Way nicer than boring Primera P10 (1999?) I'd been offered as a rep car. Then a 2.0 16v diablo red and that thing rock and rolled to be honest. Light and fast. And you can't beat PSA velour seats. Finally a 2.0 HDi 90. A simply unbreakable car that was sadly sold for €300 and replaced with a 2.2 petrol 407 Coupé. Another beaut of a car, throughly reliable and pushed to 160k on lpg and 70 mile each way commutes until head gasket issues (lpg runs hot I suppose). Proper use caae for a proper GT though. Anyway Matt, a simple car but in and of itself a wonderful thing. Quirky practical, French. C'est le trick 🎉😂 Ps having been taught how to use the handbrake to really get the beat out of an XRAD van (205 or 305), the inability to use assistive handbrake steering on Xantias was always a damper. Tant pis.

No air con but open those rear quarter lights. As long as you have decent dash vents you will get a good flow through while travelling. It worked for me with an old-style Panda anyway.

My 2013 Berlingo camper is great. I bought it with a roof conversion. I fitted it out as a mini camper, bed, sink, gas ring, loo, battery, Chinese diesel heater, etc, It's the 1.6 turbo, it has slick gearbox, steers straighter than my Z4. Does 60mpg plus on mway. I did 650 miles over 2 days, i couldn't do that in many cars, too tiring. Always passes mot. The easiest car to drive, would make a good learner car. Even i think Top Gear gave it nearly 5 stars.

Range is about 650 full tank. Replace the fuel filter as mine at 40k i am sure never changed, it gained 2,000 rpm. Put thin oil in turbo, otherwise thick oil drags on turbo. I put the rear seats in storage, i found out mice like them...

Matt I'm a plumber (retired just) plumbers got big egos and I have had brand-new transits VAUXHALLS FIATS ,the last 11 years I have owned a pugeout partner on a 10 plate on a mk 1 face lift as I knew I was coming to the end of my working life .this bullet proof van is the best van ever made its small but big .Peugeot Citroën will not or refuse to make vans like these and yours because these vans would put them out of business in reliability economy and a small but big size ,I'm keeping my van and have resisted many offers for this legend

I had a 2006 reg one of these with the 1.6 td. It was quite nippy. Only had 36k miles on it. I bought it to do gardening work with and tbh it was too nice inside for that and sold it as I didn't want to wreck it. I should've bought the van variant but it was so so practical for me n the missus and my young daughter with the 5 seats ans loads of room. My mam had a citroen saxo 1.5 non turbo diesel and that was a slow ans noisy thing. She drove across France in it. In the summer. No aircon. Never again she said. But the little saxo never missed a beat. My first car was a Peugeot 106 diesel with same engine. Had to rev the nuts off it to go anywhere but I loved it. "Top spec" Zest 3. Still no aircon mind 😂. I remember splurging my wages on a pair of Michelin front tyres @£55 each. Good times, sadly gone

One of our neighbours got offered a MOT failure Berlingo Van ten years ago, Y reg with side door and rear wipers. Failed on back axle (common apparently) it was changed and MOT’d the next day and still going now. I have to also say the 1.6 hdi in my dad’s 2007 has done 100k miles in our hands and not a single engine problem, shredded an aux belt but that’s it. Think it’s on 145k, my fiesta same year with only 90k and same engine went into limp mode, glow plugs needed changing and they are on back of engine and the snapped, top half engine tear down. Reliability is a tricky one even with basically the same engine

Brilliant car. My late father had one and he loved it. The Citroen dealer in Sale offered him any model he had in stock ( for the one price). Typical of my dad he deliberately chose a silver one without electronic windows or doors and without roof boxes etc. After he died I continued to use it and it never let him or me down. You can load it up with people, stuff, or both and it will work its socks off. Looking forward to your roadtrip.

Matt, you don’t have to apologise for your love of the Berlingo. I get it! I feel the same way about Morris Minors, especially the van version (I know!). I had one in my youth and still regret selling it, decades later. I’d love another one but the vans are particularly hard to get hold of, especially in reasonable condition. I’m that sad, I have a model of a Minor van in my bedroom….but please don’t tell anyone!

Nice , I had a new 305 van with that engine and 5 speed box in the 80s . Loved it and it was quick in comparison to the Astra and Escorts of the time . Oh and quieter too . Although Vauxhall and Ford stepped their game up with the 1700 and 1800 respectively

My dad had the Peugeot, equivalent partner 1.9 no turbo diesel. He bought it new in around 2003/4. His was top spec. and it was, like you say, quite a decent vehicle.

Bought 18:48 a Xantia 1.9td, ex dealer demo car. Drove it to France the following day and the turbo stopped working - scarily slow. I’ll never forget the French Citroen dealership experience - 4 mechanics scratching heads, then the head mechanic appeared - wearing a Dr’s white coat, just stood there, said something put his hand out and was passed a long handled screwdriver like a surgeon. Two turns of the screwdriver and the problem was fixed forever. 12 Euros.

My Dad had one bought it new in 2001, it was the perfect vehicle for a retired farmer with an allotment. It had a couple of issues with broken springs at the front but otherwise it was great.

Berlingos, good for taking stuff to the tip, including all the parts that fall off it on the way. The only vehicle I've driven that slows down on hills when it's empty, there is a reason you need a turbo in these diesels!

That shark finn is for either a paddle board or and inflatable kayak I only know as when I put mine in the water and was just spinning round and around I realised what it was actually for, these multispace vehicles are everywhere in cornwall as they're so versatile

A Range Rover that crashes over pot holes🤷🏻‍♂️. I have a petrol berlingo 1.6 110 bhp 2007. The ride and comfort is sublime. It is near on silent up to 70. It is comfortable. As for useability it is incredible. It is borrowed for ikea runs, skip runs, moving household furniture. I’ve owned it for 8yrs bought for the sliding doors to transport my elderly parents around. Since they have passed I cant bring myself to change. I’ve tested driven a few “ nicer” cars. When I get back in the B it’s just as good. Safety is a major concern. But at 17 yrs old runs absolutely perfect. Not a spot of rust on outside and still very solid at 17 yrs underneath. I do all my own servicing at it is a doddle. A 110bhp is quite lively at under a ton despite its shape. At even with that shape it still does 39 mpg on the motorway. 35 mpg round town. I do put decent tyres on it and it really does make a difference. Being a lot lighter on the front than a diesel it’s quite fleet on its feet. I totally concur Matt how these get under people’s skin. It’s not quirky they are just bloody capable cars. Mine does 0-60 in 11s. Will effortlessly cruise at 70. The petrol engine is old tech 16v but quiet and revvy. I changed the radio and as you say have to re select channels every day. So went back to original. My dad had the same diesel engine in a peugeot 206 1.9grd non turbo and that did 300k. Much better than turbos on simplicity and reliability. I have a friend with a 8 yr old E class and he says the ride is better in my berlingo onthe rough stuff. The rear parcel shelf quietens it down a lot as box echoey. For a long bangernomics trip they have selected a spacious, comfortable, smooth riding reliable Gallic chariot that are still in mass use on the continent. I am 65 and I think the Berlingo is my overall favourite car. My kids also love it if they borrow it. As you say a superb dog carrier for dogs comfort. My mates down the pub rag me for it but always borrowing it. The torsion bars are suspect but mines still ok. I have to say the brakes are poor. I’ve changes all mine servo, master cyclinder and brakes but still the same. Mines done 100k and it feels as tight as a newish car. The seats are soft and comfortable. I don’t know if I am lucky I have not one rattle or squeak unless the parcel shelf is removed. Even if it needs the cooling sorted dont all cars have these problems at 20yrs old. These get hotter over the middle temp range then the electric fan comes on rather late in my opinion. I think you will have a ball in this driving to Rome. Very nice colour too Matt. Indeed they have egg on their faces and joke is reversed

Cannot beat the old 1.9 diesel engine.Had one in my old 306 never missed a beat.No silly problems with dpf and egr like you get on all the newer cars.

Well it may not be a Range Rover but it will use a hell of a lot less fuel on the Rome Trip🙂Can sort of see the attraction I think! and you won't be too worried if it gets the odd knock in Rome which is a probability given the way the locals drive! Looking forward to the video.

The XUD is an excellent engine, I think I know the coolant pipe that's leaking as my BX did the same. Get some mk1 Saxo alloys.

Its a slightly redesigned XUD engine. The ancillery belt can break up and cause cambelt to jump teeth. But long as its kept on top of its a brilliant unit. Its not quick but they do generally run forever with maintenance kept on top of.

Had Citroën BX 1.9 non turbo diesel with 300k miles. More reliable than the 1.7 turbo and ran most of its life on red diesel. Then bought a brand new Renault 1.9 non turbo clip. Big engine in small car so not slow but very economical. I don't stop when I'm driving through Skelmersdale as I want to keep my wheels lol

I once had a Xantia with a non-turbo diesel engine; one of the most unbreakable cars I’ve ever had. I will admit, the Berlingo is right up my street, I love it. I’d probably fit a drivers seat with an armrest if I was driving to Rome and I’d definitely sort the stereo. But apart from that, it’s a peach.

The radio usually you need to swap the permanent live and switch live wires usually yellow and red and they are the wrong way around in some cars and radios Also with it wired the wrong way there will be a constant drain on your battery

I love these things also, I’m the same age as matt, we did upgrade to the 2.0 hdi in about 2007 it blew my mind how much more power it had, We still have it as farm van
