This is a genius way to sharpen. I am going to try the two different layers but use blend-if instead of blend modes to see it I can get some fine control. Or a combination of blend modes and blend-if. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good tutorial. Just want to recommend you set Smart Sharpen to "Lens Blur" instead of Gaussian. It will be a more accurate sharpening ("deconvolution") with less haloing to begin with. The masking techniques shown in the tutorial works for any sharpening method.

I've done several enhancement with similar problem. In my take Im just using "underrated" History Brush tool and change their blending type. That's off course much more destructive way than using several layers
