So the second language that you hear them speaking occasionally is Mandarin Chinese. In the background lore of the series; the US and China merged into a United Global Superpower that effectively ended up running the entire planet as "the Alliance" that they were fighting against at the start of the series. As such; not only will you see plenty of Asian-inspired practices throughout the show; but 90% of all people are natively bilingual as a result of the common history before they started getting spread around the galaxy. (Also; it doubles as a TV-friendly way to get expletives past the radar. If you ever want to know how to swear in Chinese; just copy whatever you hear the characters say during high pressure moments~ )

I can't confirm that this is true, but from what I understand, one reason this show was so good was that Joss Whedon took all the main actors out for a couple weeks in an isolated cabin. They spent the time playing role-playing games with each of them playing their characters. Giving them time to develop their personalities, their quirks and their interpersonal relationships. So that when the show started they had a much fuller idea of who they were playing and how they got along. Most shows, even the really good ones, take the first season or so to get that, whereas they were able to portray that out of the gate. I don't know if this is true, but I hope it is, and I wish more directors would do this, as it is a brilliant technique.

@@awkwardashleigh You seem a little confused about the story of the show. It was aired for the 2002 season and cut before it finished it's story. Corporate CEO's don't care very much about Sci-Fi shows because sometimes the budget is more than the show brings in at the beginning, they can't see the future of syndication at the CEO brain level until after it brings in billions, so they just cut the show for some sports garbage or reality TV garbage that has no special effects and no budget. All they care about is instant profit at "0" cost. That's why the Sci-Fi channel failed when they started airing ghost's and WWF instead of Sci-Fi movies. Low budget & low IQ audience. Anyway there was a big explosion of criticism towards the network for their constant habit of cutting Sci-Fi shows in the middle of a story and after 4 yrs they decided to make a movie to end the story and it broke the bank. They keep doing the same thing with Sci-Fi to this day, if it's not an instant box hit they trash it and replace it with a no budget show for low IQ people like themselves. It's like a good wine or whiskey, you don't drink it from the barrel, it needs to age and develop with time. The 2005 movie Serenity is a closure to the series and has references to all the previous shows built in, so wait until you've seen all the shows before watching the movie. They did the same with "Farscape", they canceled the series and after a year or more of blow back they made "The Peace Keeper Wars" to complete the story line. Look at "Lost in Space" after 60 yrs, 2n TV series & 3 movies their still lost in limbo because it didn't make an instant profit. Same goes for "Stargate Universe" stuck in limbo. If it's labeled Sci-Fi it's destined to limbo because it requires an IQ over a single digit to comprehend the story and a budget higher than free to produce.

The awesome little shot that a lot of people miss is when Preacher Book goes to talk to Inara (the Companion) at the end of the first episode. There is the shot where the preacher is down on his knees and Inara stands in front of him and puts her hand on his head. It is mimicking Catholic absolution where the priest absolves you of your sins. This would normally be a priest doing this to a sinner (like a prostitute), but this is scene totally flips it upside down and the Companion is granting absolution to the priest.

I was lucky enough to catch this on broadcast. I watched it with a bunch of friends. When Niska's henchman was giving his speech about how they could keep the money, everyone was expecting that they were setting up the season's big bad. So when he got kicked into the engine, I can tell you that's was the moment we all fell in love with the show.

Dear AA, I have been watching your videos for a long while but finally needed to comment. I am a Gen Xer so I laugh a lot seeing you experience media I grew up with, from John Carpenter to Star Wars. The thing is, I was binging some of your videos in the background while working on grading papers (gotta feed that algorithm) when I came across one that I cannot find at the moment, where you were in tears, openly talking about your mental and emotional health. I was shocked at how much I identified with you in that moment (I have a generalised anxiety disorder and PTSD from teaching public school). I realised that age, distance, life experience, all that means nothing compared to the fact that we're all just people, fighting our battles (usually in silence) and making it through the day. You do such a great job of being positive and supporting of your fans and this whole community, and we notice. We care that you care. I am a big Firefly fan, and I am about to start watching this reaction. Before I do, I want you to know that my girlfriend, myself, and our chonky boi Tacocat all love and care about you, Beans, and the oft-referenced "hubband." We are always here for you, just like you're here for us. Love always, M, R, and TC

One of the best 1 season shows ever. My English/Sci-Fi teacher loved this show and she showed it to me, I immediately fell in love with it. One of my favorite ensemble casts in a show. And Serenity (the film) is amazing! Two fun facts: The uniforms and armor that the Alliance wears are actually the same screen used costumes from Starship Troopers (1997) Alan Tudyk, who plays Wash, was also in films like A Knight’s Tale, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, & Dodgeball but he is mostly known for his voice over work in many other projects, He is the voice of Sonny in I, Robot & K-2SO in Rouge One and in a couple of Modern Disney Films (King Candy in Wreck It Ralph, Duke of Weselton in Frozen, Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6, Duke Weaselton in Zootopia, Hei Hei in Moana, and many more)

Niska's philosophy of how reputation is just talk, and only once you get to know someone does that become solid, I think is one of the great lessons in firefly. I have thought back to that when listening to any gossip or talk.

Welcome meimei, Ashleigh the browncoat! One of the things that makes Firefly special -- there are many such things, you see -- is the comedic performance of pretty much every character. Joss Whedon is well known for creating wonderful one-liners. Every single episode has some lines that just make me giggle uncontrollably, usually by subverting clichés. Like in the Train Job: Malcom goes 'say it to my face!', the other guy faces him and says 'and what're gonna do 'bout it?' and you expect Malcolm to follow the cliché and punch him, but noooo, he goes, 'me? nothing, I just wanted you to face me so she could get behind you' .... 😅😂🤣
