Joss intended the theme to be something Mal had come up with while strumming a guitar in his cabin, but couldn't finish. He was disappointed that the final version used in the show sounded "too professional". After the show aired the song was expanded by a fan, Michele Dockrey, to a full version. River didn't grow up on Miranda. She and Simon grew up on Osiris, a central planet. River learned about Miranda while she was at the Academy. Remember when the Operative said, "Key members of Parliament. Key. The minds behind every military, diplomatic, and covert operation in the galaxy, and you put them in a room with a psychic." The Alliance couldn't know exactly what River had learned from the minds of those people, but they couldn't take a chance that she might reveal their most closely guarded secrets.

River grew up with Simon on one of the inner planets. She learned of Miranda when she was displayed to the high state officials, whilst they were experimenting on her. That's why she talks about having memories that are not her own and, "Old men covered in blood, never touched it but are swimming in it." The dreams she has are just normal dreams/nightmares. They are her brain trying to reconcile the memories that she unintentionally pulled from the minds of the Alliance officials.

@sharkdentures3247

To clarify a few things Ashleigh. 1) The "school" with "young River" was a Dream. (or rather a nightmare) Induced by the Academy personal's experimenting on her. It wasn't "real", nor a real memory. Just something her mind conjured up. 2) River had NEVER been on Miranda before. She "knew" ("knew" in quotation marks) about Miranda, Reavers & what happened there, because she mentally "picked up" that information from the "Key Members of Parliament" who "observed her" at the Academy. But the information was BURIED deep down in her psyche, so she wasn't consciously "aware" of it. (Which also means she doesn't personally KNOW any of the Reavers.) 3) The Alliance soldiers didn't place Mr. Universe with his Lovebot. Like the dog in John Wick dragging himself to John, Mr. Universe dragged HIMSELF to her. (In order to program/ record that dying message for Mal.) 4) "There is nothing left to see." I think the Operative wasn't talking about "self-deletion" as much as that, as former ZEALOT, Mal completely "destroyed" him by "breaking his faith". Also implying that sooner or later (probably sooner) the Alliance would send someone to KILL him anyways since he is "no longer their man".

I love the symbolism of when River throws up after the recording is first played. Her having such a dark secret forced on her brain from memories that were not hers really messed her up. (“… and some of it can’t be quantified…”) After the video played, she now was able to incorporate “the secret” in her own consciousness and “spew” out the toxicity that had been trapped there.

Hey Asheleigh, glad to have seen you finally finish up the Firefly saga. A few notes for you to think about, is that River didn't grow up on Miranda. One of the themes than ran thru the show and the movie was that central planets were protected by the alliance, border planets were generally discarded. When River was captured and experimented on as the "Operative/bad guy" says there were key government officials in the same room with her. Just thru being in proximity of her, she psychically learned about what happened on Miranda. And she couldn't cope with knowing that information. It's why when she was remembering and even misremembering her time at school that she kept sawing flashes of reavers, in people's faces, or how how the teach asked them all to just lie down and go to sleep. I can't say for sure if she knew exactly what had happened there, but she certainly had a hunch about something very wrong occuring on the planet. Something so important to her, that she would basically pull a mutiny on the ship to make sure the crew knew what was bothering her. The one thing I will say about it's cancellation is, at the time I was supremely bummed out because I felt like it could have gotten so much more interesting. But on the flip side, it didn't get franchised long enough to get bad. I suppose in my mind that's the trade off. I would have loved an extra episode with Shepard Book, Or More with Inara. But this movie managed to sort of wrap everything up well enough for me even if some questions were left unanswered.

Back in the day when I was running a costume shop, one of my regular clients was a couple who ran the theater department for a community college. they liked to do a lot of Shakespeare and enjoyed using various themes and eras to base the plays in. Well one time they came to me and said they were doing Much Ado About Nothing and I suggested the serenity/Firefly universe. Her reply was "huh? what's that?" I told them to go home and watch it. Which they did and were like WE LOVE THAT. and went to tell their class. Ha! half the class was "Huh? What's that?" the other half was WE LOVE THAT. Once the rest of the class watched it, they were 100% on board. Great production, they had so much fun!

The thing about Shepherd and Wash, they were moral conscience of the crew and Mal in particular. With his act to quit running and stand for something again, Mal has found his conscience.

Dark Matter is a show with an ensemble cast similar to Firefly. The show has 38 episodes over 3 seasons but got cancelled on a cliffhanger. Damn. Granted, Firefly has more charm and followers.

I was SO MAD about Dark Matter! The cliffhanger was the worst! Granted it wasn't AS good of a show as Firefly but I still loved it very much! I was so hoping someone like Netflix or Prime was gonna pick them up after they got the news.

Seeing those panels flying off had me laughing "what was that?" It made me think of my dad, and the scrappy vehicles he drove to death. He drove them til they cried Uncle, then he drove them some more. Love your reaction as always ❤ Have a good night.

River didn’t live on or know the people on the planet. She knew about it because of what the agent was upset about at the beginning; the doctor brought members of parliament around her, so she read their minds and learned the truth about the reevers and the planet Miranda.

Zoe looks awesome in that dress she wears at the funeral at the end. Which is a tribute to Wash, and a callback to the episode Shindig, where Wash wants to buy her a slinky dress. And that dress is slinky.

You also can watch series called "Con Man" (2015). There are actors from Firefly. It's about actors from sci-fi movies and series who are doomed to travel across fan conventions.

This movie, despite its lack of box office success, is probably a big reason Whedon got to write and direct "The Avengers". He was already a Marvel comic book fanatic, and helped out with the writing of a number of movies and comic books. But this movie showed he could introduce and juggle a large cast, even to an audience that might not be familiar with any or all of them.

Sorry, but the shattered hope of a Malcolm/Inara kiss was hilarious. (The outtakes are pure gold... one of Nathan's rants during that "Fine Ways to Die" scene had the cast on the ground).

You might enjoy Castle, Nathan Fillion is the title character, and several Firefly alums run through the series, they even do a kind of spoof on Firefly in one episode.

River and Simon were born on a core world of Osiris. Her connection about the people dying were from a psychic interaction with the people who knew. Maybe her empathic whatever picked up on their collective crazy which in turn made her crazy.

My favorite thing about this movie other than the storytelling, characters and directing was the pure SCIENCE FICTION in the movie. There wasn't ALOT but the scene with the ship-crane and the triple Battle at the end. SO good .

My theory with Shepard is he WAS one of those Alliance Agents who lost faith in the Alliance and was rebuilding his life after having lost his belief in what the Alliance was doing. That is why he had such a high clearance and why he know about people like Nishka and how he knew about the agent and how he works. It is also why he wont talk about it.

I always think The Operative’s back story is like Shepherd Book’s. I’m sure this has been explained elsewhere but I like to think that’s how they showed it within the film.

If you haven't, I recommend looking up the deleted scenes from this movie, particularly an alternate take from the "we're going to make Serenity look like a reaver ship" scene where Nathan Fillion does some creative ad-libbing: "He's our friend, we should honor him" 🤣 Oh, and the original theme plays at the end of the credits.

It felt so wrong, laughing at Kaylee's declaration that she was gonna live, right after losing Wash. But Joss Whedon knew that the audience would need it.

They released a few canonical comic books after the movie dropped. They run into the agent again. I won’t spoil it, though. That was basically Joss Whedon’s thing, for when shows ended. There’s an entire 8th “season” of Buffy released in comic book format.

River had extreme learning ability and dexterity, she also had psychic abilities that probably didn’t really kick in until puberty. The military found out about her abilities and decided she would be an ideal candidate for modification and programming. Other than the reavers she may have been the only survivor of Miranda. She could feel the people dying there and what the reavers felt. It likely gave her a psychic overload to the point where the govt put her on ice until they could control her easier. That’s when Simon intervened and took her away. PS: i know nothing beyond the show and movie so these are all best guesses.
