Speaking from experience, it is possible for someone like Darlene to have both personalities you mentioned depending on how interested she is in another person. Not all mean people are mean to everyone and she likely just prefers to have a long term boy toy rather than burning bridges and constantly looking for new partners. Many mean people actually show love and affection like her 1st personality when they actually like them, but once Boomhauer did the pool party she didn't like him anymore and started to treat him like everyone else she doesn't like or care for. I always found this episode to be a form of Karma for Boomhauer, In terms of the womanizing side of his personality. Because you know, Boomhauer is the Quagmire of the show but in this episode instead of him being the heartbreaker, He got his heartbroken for once. And of course, Boomehauer is also usually a one-night stand kind of guy but when he falls in love only to be rejected, Now he knows how Bill feels especially because Bill saw the woman first and Boomhauer stole his chance. And even though Bill had every right to gloat about Boomhauer being miserable like him, Instead Bill played the good friend card and encouraged Boomhauer to get back in the game.
@animefan2454Ай бұрын
Plus, Bill doged a bullet She wasn't into Boomhower and was pretty sure she would not be into Bill. Even if Bill did come to the rescue, she honestly would have just awkwardly turned him down or just called him a creep since he was the one who dug the holes.

@@animefan2454 Yeah, when I was younger and watched this episode, I originally felt some sympathy for Bill, because I almost kinda saw him as like the Squidward of King of the Hill; but looking back on it now, his actions are really scummy. I'm glad Shady took a look at this episode and made the points he did, because I can say from personal experience that I'm one of those guys who tends to get led on to expecting something out of someone only to get stood up. My last 2 girlfriends did that to me, as did countless crushes I have had. If Boomhaur was a little less scummy with his promiscuous lifestyle, I would definitely feel sorry for him in this episode. That's why even though I will always be a heterosexual man, I am pretty well convinced that my other half doesn't exist. So I try to be more promiscuous myself, but unfortunately, even that isn't going well for me.

I really never felt like Boomhauer was represented as someone who falsely leads women on outside off this episode. Until that point it seemed like the one-night-stands were all mutual or his lifestyle was so loosely implied that we never could really see that part of his character. Promiscuity doesn't necessarily mean he's a manipulator, and I feel like it was only really made clear in this episode to drive the plot.

@otaking3582Ай бұрын
If Boomhauer's interactions with Bobby are any indication, everyone in the KotH universe apparently hears him speak normally.
I completely agree with what you said. I mean Marla three strikes were 1. Boomhauer invited complete strangers into her home. With the one person she does know being someone that wanted strands of her hair. 2. She never even intended for Boomhauer to stay. Her instructions made it clear that once he's done he can leave and set the alarm. Not make yourself comfortable and lounge around her place for the evening. 3. Two strikes plus the fact that he acts like is normal. Without any apology he goes and makes a request from her without thinking of her needs. Like he expecting her to just take care of him This episode should've had the woman be reasonably upset as she was in the right. Move on to someone new after what Boomhauer has done with someone who would treat her right. If they wanted an episode that showed Boomhauer what he was doing was wrong. They should've made it that he tried doing everything right, but she ghosted him because she's not that interested in him personally. Because it's not like all the women he attracted did what Boomhauer and his friends put Marla through.
@pusheenqueen519Ай бұрын
I have to say, I didn't get any of Marla's actions in the episode as leading him on that she would be interested in an actual relationship. I mean, yeah they got food, had a chat about his work, he liked her car, but I'd say Marla's attitude was at FWB at most and she didn't express any interest in being anything else to Boomhauer but a f*ck buddy. I think that was all Boomhauer feeling they had a connection and assuming she wanted more because he's used to the women he leads on wanting more.
@NecroesАй бұрын
Marla actually seems pretty consistent to me, just with an understanding of what she's meant to portray-or accidentally portrays, if if wasn't intentional. Boomhaur is a "hit it and quit it" type of person. He is portrayed as the type of person to tell a woman basically whatever he thinks she wants to hear in order to convince her to sleep with him. He then does everything in his power to severe the connection, without just admitting he did a scummy thing and discussing in a straight forward manner. Marla, by contrast, seems to be more about "friends with benefits." Seeking out Boomhaur-some random guy she enjoyed sleeping with after he helped her-is pretty standard behavior. She essentially wanted to see if he would be a good friend, in addition to being someone to have casual sex with. Their conversation-light topics that don't discuss romance but just general things you'd discuss with a friend-and how she tries to establish ground rules about her home when she needs to leave-telling him what he can do and what's expected he leaves-is pretty par for the course, especially when she's short on time. Likely she assumed Boomhaur is an adult whom wanted the same thing, and already knew the rules of what she was offering. Chances are, if Boomhaur had not royally messed up by inviting his friends into her home, she would have later discussed more concrete ground rules for what to expect in being her sex-friend. Instead, Boomhaur messed up, and made things worse by taking a sudden giant leap by asking for marriage. It's entirely possible-even likely-that Marla would have reached out again after the incident to discuss her expectations once she moved past being upset. She likely has a rotating roster of hook ups, and Boomhaur could have been one. He crashed that ship, though, and hard. Marla's reactions to him are just the signs of someone who's used to this situation not showing emotional investment in someone she never had romantic intentions for.
@thewolfofwallstreet627Ай бұрын
Agreed. Plus, most guys that are like Boomhaur are used to being in complete control of a relationship that, when they're not, they don't know what to do. I worked with tons of self-proclaimed "womanizers" before, and they're always the same. They have huge egos. You almost have to have an ego to get as many girls as they do regularly for one night stands. However, they're usually attracted to girls that present challenges to them predominantly. This can be true in most fiction as well. Take Gaston from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," for example. It was established that Gaston could literally have any other girl in that village he wanted, as all the other girls not named Belle were fawning over him. Yet, he chose to pursue Belle because she showed zero interest in him, which made his desire for her all the stronger because he saw her as a challenge. He didn't actually love her per se because if he did, then he never would've resorted to the tactics he did in the film. It was always more about his ego and pride than anything else. Boomhaur probably felt drawn to her because she was the first woman who didn't get overly attached to him after their intimate encounter, so he became intrigued by her because she was a challenge to him. Most of the guys she probably hooked up with long term before were probably mostly guys who were already married, but wanted her as a side chick. Or, some of them were probably guys who don't want relationships with anyone but a good time. She probably assumed Boomhaur was in the latter category, but he inevitably proved he couldn't handle it.
@NecroesАй бұрын
@@thewolfofwallstreet627 I think you're reading into this in a couple of incorrect ways; For one, not all 'womanizers' are the same. The male equivalent to Marla exists, and falls under that umbrella. Even Boomhaur's one-night-stand preference isn't, in itself, socially unacceptable. Some people just don't prefer to hook up more than once, to avoid emotional complications. Where Boomhaur has issues is that he's not clear about this, and gives women false hope about his intentions to get them into bed with him. It's a scummy thing to do, because he's intentionally misleading them to get what he wants. If he was just open and honest with these women, and only slept with those who were alright with that, then it wouldn't be an issue. It's also not exactly a matter of ego; Plenty of people find success through volume. It takes a lot of humility to accept being turned down without it breaking your stride, but plenty of people find success with that exact method; Ask literally everyone, and don't stop until someone says yes. The important part of that method is only asking the once, and then moving on when they say no. Characters from fiction are also a bad example, especially from children's media. While those types of people can and do exist-it would break immersion if they didn't-generally they are more complex than literature would give that archetype credit for. Gaston is a massively oversimplified character. His entire characterization amounts to the laziest depiction of the worst aspect of masculinity. He's interested in Bell because she's considered pretty, and she turned him down so now he has to have her. This is a pretty common trope to use to portray his character type, but it's actually extremely rare to see that kind of person in the real world. It's sort of the Johny Bravo cliche, except forgetting that people who are actually like Johny Bravo only use those methods because they work more often than they don't. The trick for Gaston is basically the same as it is with Johny; We only see the parts where they fail because those are necessary for the media they're in to work. We don't see how immensely successive they are when off-screen, because that's not important to the story. However, if they were real people, those successes would define them far more than their failures.

You sound like you've done a lap or two in the lifestyle. That's how I interpreted the episode myself. Boomhauer got a toe in the door perhaps into Arlen's local scene with an upscale single boss lady. But he's really too old school lady's man for play parties and Meet'n'Greets. Lol.

I was always under the impression that while Marlene liked Boomhauer, she was ultimately satisfied with a more casual/hook-up based relationship with him, and that it was Boomhauer jumping the gun on thinking they were in a proper relationship, kind of like a mirror to how Boomhauer and Bill see relationships at the beginning of the episode. I don't see the pool thing being the reason for a "Break-up", because I don't think there was a Break-up in Marlene's eyes. She just got tired of Boomhauer, and decided to move on. That's how I see it as her being a more consistent character. She was causally fine with Jeff, but the minute he started getting too cozy, she realized he wasn't what she wanted anymore, and he vastly overestimated what their relationship was. If that makes sense.

Originally the creators meant it to be more serial which you can see in the first season, the characters were supposed to change and age etc. But the network didn't want to risk reruns being confusing when played out of order so they had to lean episodic sadly

I’m pretty sure the reason Bill said he was only going to getter fatter in a speech about not giving up was him using self deprecating humor to help lift Boomhauer’s spirits. Notice after he says that Boomhauer cracks a smile and a small chuckle. I feel like that little bit of humor really helped Bill grab Boomhauer’s attention as his speech was ramping up, leading to the big moment where he was able to hype Boomhauer up.

You should definitely cover Patch Boomhauer, not only is it another good Boomhauer episode, BUT I can imagine it's another episode that really brings out "Angry Shady". Because seriously, a lot of stuff happens on there that really can tick you off, most noticeably is Hank's behavior in the episode, believing Patch, someone he barely knows, over Boomhauer...someone Hank has personally known since childhood, is infuriating. This is an example of what you were saying in your Teen Titans review on Starfire, about how a lot of shows will have characters in the main cast forgetting that they trust each other just because a new character comes along, which you directly called out King of the Hill for.

I always thought it was weird that Boomhauer invited the guys over to her house too. And from what Hank mentions, about him not being so uptight about his lady friends' underwear, it seems to be a _regular_ occurrence. So they guys are just meeting up at strangers' houses to swim because Boomhauer slept with them? Dale I can see doing that regularly, and Bill. But Hank? Great episode though.

12:08 Naw this right here is one of the best versions of Hank Hill. When he is in the story because he is the main character but he is not the main or even secondary focus of the episode he can actually be pretty chill and funny.

6:44 Luanne's insightful analogy isn't a one off thing. She nails it in Pretty Pretty Dresses when she says she doesn't know anything about psychology, but Bill getting closure will help him let go of Lenore. Luanne has a lot of heart and car smarts that the show unfortunately wrote out over time. Also, she probably called it "grown up sex" to make herself more comfortable explaining it to Bobby, and to deter him from going for it, per her Christian sensibilities. Just trying to be a responsible cousin, I guess lol.

@@RueRyuzaki6 thats very true. Bill does have the potenial to succed. However most people in Bills case, the people that may suffer in similiar ways to Bill turn to drinking and other things because they cant see a better path. Its still pretty bad, but it is also understandable. Its a complicated issue. Yet i can honestly say that if i met someone like Bill and saw him drinking i would be like "yeah... i get it. Got one for me?" Anyway. Everyone should try to do better. So yeah, drinking your problems away doesnt help

I'd take someone making me breakfast over fancy cars and mansions any day. There's something intimate about making food for someone you really care about. Boomhauer really is a fool to pass that up. Also the only car that would attract me is a camaro, so I can't say for sure if Peggy's car is a "chick magnet" or not. Maybe that's just how she sees it because it's her car lol
@TeskeTheArseАй бұрын
Marlene showed how she was only interested with the Adult bed stuff from the start. It's something that is easy to see through her mannerisms through the episode. She was carried over the first meeting and cared for, and passion ensues. After that, she comes back when she isn't jogging to see if she can get a nibble on the bait (The classic car), then spends some time to see if they are compatible at all. Most likely, she doesn't really commit to memory his details, it's all a formality in order to see if he is worth keeping. The first day after doing the bedroom dance in her place sells it. She tells him to have some food and wake up, but insists on him leaving by mentioning the security system. This is something that happens a lot when you call for a "special friend" to come over and have some playtime with them but you are on a tight schedule. This sort of stuff is more recognizable for people that have lived a sort of one night stand sort of lifestyle, making me wonder if Mike Judge had a lot of those or if it was one of the writers.

14:15 BUT patch boomhauer DOES let us know why Boomhauer doesn’t actually commit to women anymore, he’s scared of getting hurt like he did when he loved someone the first time so he only likes one night stands to protect himself and his cool factor but when a woman with the same cool factor pulls him out of that “you have nothing to offer me and I know that” mindset…he gets overly infatuated.
