At my school, if you disrespected the janitorial staff, you basically got socially ostracized. The janitors were usually middle age women, who were literally the sweetest people I’ve ever met. It was basically an unspoken rule to leave the classrooms as clean as possible to make less work for them. A girl transferred from a very wealthy part of Texas (we live in a lower class mostly farmer community), and she always left messes in her wake. Spilled coffee from her morning Starbucks runs (she’d also leave the cup behind), crumbs and snack bags and wrappers, and when we told her “hey mind throwing that away?” She said that she didn’t have to because there were people to do it for her and that a monkey could do it. Yeah she basically got socially isolated the rest of the semester until she started to do it.

My favorite thing about King of the Hill's use of guest stars is that they usually have them play fictional characters instead of themselves, albeit with some in-jokes about the actors like with Knoxville. When I first saw Hank's reaction to Bobby's job, my initial reaction was that that he was "looking down at those lesser than him", like a plumber or an electrician, it's a job that's beneath him and he's too good for it. Speaking as a guy studying to be an electrical technician, I'm told we'll get a lot of that, but that we'll also be making more monwy than most people, which would explain Peter's success; his job's important and no one wants to do it

Hank should definitely be uplifting Bobby instead of looking down his nose at him, here. As a retail worker (for now, at least), Hank basically has no right to do so. He works in sales, a very often disrespected field. He works under someone else, making their money and only getting a fraction of it. He’s been doing so for years without branching off into his own business, in which he could. He has ALL the tools to make it in the industry selling just propane and propane accessories. It gets worse when you get to the friend group. Dale deals with bugs and animal carcasses. Hank can’t even tell what Boomhauer does. Bill is a total loser outside of being a barber…..i don’t know. Hank’s reaction is like most people’s reaction to jobs, which rubbed me the wrong way.

@@Amins88 I think it's because it's seen as a menial/mundane task to, in most people's minds, work on the wiring in people's houses. It's really fun when you see episodes where Bobby is succeeding and doing well for himself, but it gets ruined when Hank has to step in and stop it. Most of the time Hank is my favorite character in the show, but there ARE those episodes where I just do not agree with him at all. This is one of those episodes. I remember watching this when I was younger, and even then I remember feeling annoyed with Hank, since I felt so happy for Bobby the whole episode, only to be frustrated by the ending.

For what I see of this episode. Hank needs to back the f*** up and let Bobby figure out what he wants to do. He will make mistakes, learn and make his life better….or worse depending. But that is how life works. And it’s the person in question that matters.

The should’ve done an episode like that where after Bobby fails at something, Hank tries to step in only to find his son moving on and improving himself without his father’s help. But that seems to be the show’s biggest problem, they always have to make Hank be in the right of things.

@@KittyMonk Yeah, it kind of calls back to that one episode where they discuss a brand new mower. In the episode, Bill, for once, decides to stand up to Hank make a decision of his own, only for it to end with Bill realizing he’s wrong and that Hank makes decisions for him because he’s always right. And this is how they end it. Hank: “But if I’m making decisions for you and I’m always right, doesn’t that mean you’re always right too? Bill: “Um…” Hank: “It does.” Bill: “It does. It does! How do you like that, I’m always right!” However, this falls into the whole “Hank being too controlling” flaw in the show. I feel like it should’ve been portrayed like this. Hank: “You’re right, Bill, I’m always right. But until today, you always make the decision to let me decide for you. Wouldn’t that mean you’re always right for deciding to let me decide for you?”

Bob's Burgers also had a similar one where the message was "sure, you can make money doing this... if you have a lot of natural charisma, which naturally draws in people with LESS of that, who want to do it too, and if you encourage them, you're kind of giving false advertisement for your lifestyle"

@@KairuHakubi Shady pointed a fact that totally slipped my mind towards the end of the video. Hank used to be a school bully therefore he knows from experience just the kind of stuff they're going to pick on Bobby for. It's almost like the writers purposely gave Hank a kid who's exactly like the one's he used to brag about holding over the toilet in the men's room. So while in theory this would be the kind of job Hank would normally find honorable, he knows that Bobby will get picked on for doing it. As far as Bobby working at Strickland, no it won't make him cool but it's kind of a under the radar job that's not really going to call attention to itself unlike picking up "poop" for a living.

So a big thing that my friend pointed out to me as he was watching the series (something I had never considered) is that 5 episodes later, Bobby is panhandling for money because he wants to buy his own jeans, and the only available job for him is one he hates. Hank is furious that Bobby isn't working for his money. But 5 short episodes ago, Bobby was making good money with the business he started. Had Hank just let Bobby continue to run his business, he never would have been panhandling in the first place. And that really got under my skin. Hank is upset with Bobby working hard at a job that he looks down on, which leads to Bobby panhandling for money that Hank isn't willing to give him, and finally resulting in Bobby wearing an embarrassing costume handing out fliers. And the kicker? Bobby is bullied for doing that job. TLDR; Hank hated Bobby's job, tricked him into believing that he'll be bullied for doing that job, then 5 episodes later Bobby has to work a job where he is actively bullied, and Hank approves

Hank is the kind of guy that does not understand how important "convenience" and service industry jobs really are. Despite how simple they seem, it does not take complexity to make something important, especially when the adage "once you have it, you never want it gone" comes along. Without convenience services a lot of folks would have to basically redo their entire life schedule and prepping in ways that just leaving would do. Or even have trash left behind if certain cleaners were not around. Also plumbers and waste management should be the type of job Hank should respect and yet the very basic version of waste management he finds distasteful and looks down. Genuine privileged behavior.

When I lived in Austin about 20 years ago, I applied for a job for a mid-sized business that scooped dog poop. Their clientele included personal back (sometimes front) yards, but mostly worked with veterinaries, groomers, dog parks, walking parks, etc. that needed to keep their premises consistently clean. They explained that the more foot traffic a place saw, the more often we'd go by, and most homes would have us dropping in every two weeks or once a month. I wound up taking a job elsewhere because it was closer to home and the pay was slightly more, but I never once considered if I'd be bullied or looked down on for taking the job (and I'm not good-looking or smooth, either). The only downside I could see was having to work outside during the hotter and colder months, but they seemed like a decent group and paid pretty well, too. Dunno if they had a cool hose/vacuum deal like Peter did, though. So... Yeah. I never really understood why Hank and Peggy and everyone else were so "eww, gross" and "you will be forever ostracized if you go down this path" about it. Peter seemed like a great role model for Bobby, too. He could've honestly taught him how to handle any insults simply by example. I didn't like Hank's kinda nepotism vibes here, either. It felt more like he wanted Bobby to learn his job and get his foot in the door just so there'd be less risk for him, but that's really not what a parent should want for their kid.

Not only have we already had episodes where Hank realizes that he can handle himself despite this (Rodeo Clown ep), but a couple where he's taught him to not embarass himself or else it could ruin him (Plus Sized Model and Clown College episodes, respectively). I thought we already had the lesson of "Be careful not to diminish or disrespect yourself or else others won't respect you" taught. Not only that, but......that job is really respectible based on how Peter presents himsefl and sells it. Solid uniforms, using the riding vacuum to never get into direct contact, upbeat can-do attitude, and the boatloads he makes. Just....by all means Hank should be one of the only people that *respects* Peter. Long comment aside, I'd have a blast if Shady talked about one of these episodes. TLDR: There's dozens of episodes that show that Hank should literally be one of the only ones respecting Peter, and this is beyond jarring even today. EDIT: The more I think on it the more frustrating it gets. Hank was gung-ho about Bobby starting a shoe-shine business for crying out loud (episode where Bobby learn the value of a dollar.) How in any world does he consider one to be demeaning but the other respectable, honest work?

I think it is purely because Earth Cleaners was not Hank’s idea, and he dislikes not being in control when it comes to Bobby.

As someone who is the son of a Dog Waste Removal Specialist, Bullying can legitimately happen regardless of charisma. He used to drive a GeoTracker with his logo and number as magnet flyers on the sides and back of the car. They got stolen constantly and he got a lot of scam calls. This actually lessened though when he swapped to a Ford F-150 instead of the small zippy GeoTracker.

14:45 - Felt that. It doesn’t matter how good the pay is, there comes a point that no amount of money can make up for the pain suffered. The toll of being under appreciated & constantly disrespected in any job will send your mental health into a tailspin. Add toxicity from coworkers/employers into the mix, & you have a potent recipe for burnout & depression. One place I worked at ran the employees ragged. If you weren’t constantly doing something, you were being a useless slacker. Even taking bathroom, water, & lunch breaks was used as guilt trip material. We all laugh at that scene in SpongeBob where he’s happy Mr. Krabs gives him one more minute for lunch than the day before, but that’s genuinely what it was like working there. (Shoot, on busy days, we didn’t get a lunch break.)

The episode actually backed up Hank's view that Bobby couldn't pull it off with the interaction with the college kids who refused to touch his hands as well as Peggy freaking out.

But the frat boys prove hanks point in the episode. They say he is gross and don’t want to touch him or go near him. Hank kinda proved his point without needing jimmy that was just a bonus
