That terrifying engine roar was the chase plane. The bomber was quieter than an airliner.

I was putting on a golf green in july 30 years ago when all of a sudden, the green went dark and it got real loud overhead. It isn't that they are silent. It is that by the time they are loud, if you were their target, they would have already released the bombs and it is too late. It wasn't that neither of us heard a plane, it was that we didn't hear a plane worth looking up for. Until we did. We both had to sit down and watch it off into the horizon. As cool as it is today, it was *really* cool in the mid 90's.
@Hyposonic
@Hyposonic 5 ай бұрын
@@franksmith4730 I've always argued that same point. However, it seems the B-21 is quieter than the B-2. I surmise this may be intentional to aid in areas that have acoustic early warning arrays to detect low-level aircraft.

The B 21 is actually incredibly quiet by design. The roar you hear is the F 15 chase plane that's not on screen. I cannot wait for us to have 100 of these marvels operational. Our adversaries, for all their bluster and imitation, are decades behind.

The chase plane is actually a General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and operated by a NASA pilot, and it can be seen in this video - at the 01:42 time code mark, just off of the B-21 Raider's starboard wing.

Are you sure? Have you noticed that the White House is bought & paid for by the Chinese or that they've stolen every piece of intellectual property we have because we're too corrupt, incompetent, or just downright stupid to stop them? Electric naval propulsion systems and the F35 are some examples.

If the B-21 is better than the B-2, then it must be a FANTASTIC airplane. Northrop Grumman really knows how to make stealth bombers. (I worked for a competitor, but I admire their planes.)
@phoenixrising4073
@phoenixrising4073 Ай бұрын
It should have only marginally better stealth over the B2, which is already incredibly stealthy, but only carries half the payload. I think these will be a great asset, but they will lack the immediate response you can get from a B1 Lancer, unless of course we are able to saturate an area with f35s on the ready. I'm sure our military strategists know best, but I don't like the thought of this one aircraft replacing all of our other bombers. Anywho
@factChecker01
@factChecker01 Ай бұрын
@@phoenixrising4073 , I think there is more emphasis on stealth in the long wavelengths where the B2 is not as stealthy. For some reason, it helps to reduce the number of zig-zags on the trailing edges of the wings. I don't know anything about it.
@phoenixrising4073
@phoenixrising4073 Ай бұрын
@factChecker01 I might speculate that perhaps the overall size of the airframe would affect the long wavelength detection as well as the geometry. From what I understand, other stealth platforms can still be detected by longer wavelengths, but the detection information is more of a general direction and is not what is needed for a highly accurate weapons lock. If what you're saying is correct, these planes should be virtually invisible to all radar. Interesting times indeed.

@@douginorlando6260 that's fair enough, electronic warfare (inc missile seeker/countermeasures etc) is a game of probabilities and nothing is ever totally safe, but there's a lot the attacker can do in this situation too to lower the odds of being intercepted. At at very basic level, the fact they'll be using a B-21 instead of a B-52 already gives them a massive advantage, due to lower RCS and IR signature. Then there's very long range stand-off weapons that could keep the aircraft out of harms way almost entirely. There's also the fact that at such long ranges, any change in flight path will sap a huge amount of energy from an approaching missile. Then there's the usual decoys, jamming, directed and passive countermeasures, etc. That all leaves a lot of chances for things to go either right or wrong from both sides.

@@Orbital_Inclination … True for the moment. But I expect some surprises in detection capability. Especially in sensing outside the X band. Which will make counting on stealth as effective as a WW1 submarine would be today

From 2:01 to 2:57, that was footage of a B-2 Stealth Bomber taking off. You can tell by the aft section outline. The B-21 has a single wedge point, the B-2 has three wedge points.

Same as the B2, needs its wing tip drag flaps open for directional stability. A lot of washout in those wing tips.

Just in case you’re curious they are called elevons. When an aircraft is designed without an empennage you lose the conventional placement for the elevator, rudder, trim tabs, and horizontal and vertical stabilizers.

What? The B-2 has a bed, a bathroom, and even a microwave.
@Ilgenfixit80
@Ilgenfixit80 5 ай бұрын
Correction: the B-2 has an area that, after the hatch is closed, a pilot can temporarily set up a cot. It does have a microwave and chemical toilet right next to where your head goes. While you rest, you're wearing ear protection since there are 4 jet engines on the other side of the bulkhead. This whole area is slightly larger than a passenger aircraft lavatory. It's still amazing and a privilege to witness flying over my home. I've lived near the B-2 since 1993, and I run out to see her fly almost every time.

In the late 90's or early 00's at I believe was Pocono Raceway, we weere privileged enough to have a couple of B-2's conduct a flyover after the national anthem just prior to the green flag flying for the NASCAR race in June or August. It was OUTSTANDING!

Back in the 80s I was teaching an evening class at East Los Angeles College. I let the class out at 10 PM and was walking to my car. The lights at the tennis court were very bright even though no one was playing tennis. As I was walking near them something caught my eye in the sky. What I saw was the unmistakable bottom of the B-2 making a practice run going from west to south. It was probably about 500 or so feet in the black sky. There was NOT a sound, no engine roar totally silent as it flew over and as it banked to the south. When it turned I was able to see it from the rear and I could not see the light of the flame from the engines. It would have been totally invisible if the light from the tennis courts hadn't reflected off it. It was quite a sight. If it was going to bomb downtown L.A. it would have never been seen.
