When Frodo clutches his chest, it's not the ring. It's the wound from where he was stabbed. It will never be fully healed. Also, remember that Frodo is slowly being influenced by the Ring, so don't be so hard on him. Imagine having the essence of Satan in a ring around your neck, getting heavier & stronger the closer you get to Mordor. Perfect reaction to the return of Gandalf! 💜 -x-

And you also have to take into account that hobbits are not living a warrior life in the Shire. They’re seeing things and facing challenges they’ve _never_ dealt w/ before and likely neither has any other Hobbit besides Bilbo.

So Gandalf is basically a lesser Angel sent by God, along with Saruman and three others. But since Saruman decided to ally with Sauron, another Angel albeit fallen, he becomes White instead of Saruman. Essentially returned by God for his effort to save the world and empowered to take Saruman's intended role.

I appreciate it too. I never thought of it that way. But I'm little puzzled why people later in Gondor call him Mithrandir or something like that. I don't even remember if they all call him that but at least some people use that name sometimes and I'd really like to know why that is and if it has any deeper meaning. I mean, why two very different names? 🤔

@@Juide80 Mithrandir is a Sindarin name used by the Elves to refer to Gandalf and since Gandalf can speak Sindarin, he also often uses that name. “Mithrandir” means “Grey Pilgrim” or “Wanderer” in Sindarin, which is a reference to Gandalf’s character. Gandalf also has many nicknames such as The White Rider, Gandalf the Grey, Greyhame and Stormcrow. Other names include Olórin, Gandalf’s actual name used in Valinor, where he comes from, Incánus, the name by which Gandalf is known in the south, Tharkûn, the name that the Dwarves use to address Gandalf and finally Láthspell, a name given to Gandalf by Gríma Wormtongue when the former arrived at Meduseld. The word actually translates to “ill news” in Old English, which comes from láð meaning “causing hate, evil, injury” and spell meaning “story, message”.

The most important thing to remember about ring, is no one can resist it. It makes everything bad about you worse, if you have a temper, it gets worse. Prone to jelousy? Worse. What do you secretly fear? It gets worse. It corrupts anyone, it just takes time. It takes longer with hobbits just because they don't want much in life. Hobbits want a happy home, good food and peace so the ring takes longer to corrupt them. But anyone who carries it long enough will end up like Gollum, it was even starting to happen to Bilbo. Frodo looks at Gollum and sees his future, so he wants to help him. When Frodo does... silly things, thats the ring affecting his judgement, even possessing him in a fashion. However, there are none who can contend with the will of Sauron. No one who can resist the ring forever. So when people think they could do better than Frodo did with it... no they could not. Frodo is doing god tier levels of resisting it, because he is a sweet guy with not much violence in him or dark traits.

@@D123-f9k the ring has more influence the closer you are to the source of its destruction. In the book, the ring almost literally starts panicking and pushing the agenda forward when Sam and Frodo got to Cirith Ungol: as soon as Sam grabbed it, it started talking to him. Showing him his desire: turning the whole Mordor into a lush garden that he could tend. Sam didn't give in because in his mind, while it would be amazing to, he simply couldn't handle the garden of that size by himself and there would not be much beauty if it was a giant field instead of a small, cozy patch. Had he carried it any longer, the Ring would find something else to show him, something Sam wouldn't find as ridiculous

Think of the ring as the embodiment of addiction and temptation. Even Gandalf was terrified of it. Frodo is like a person who is battling the most powerful addiction you can imagine. Sometimes it's easy to forget the struggle he's going through because the film can only do so much to show it.

Gollum is easy to hate, but remember what Gandalf said about mortals, who cannot give life, not being hasty to deal out death and judgment. Another reason Frodo goes easy on Gollum is that they were both Ringbearers ... Frodo is terrified that his own future self will be the same as Gollum's present ... Frodo cannot judge Gollum w/o judging himself ... Frodo is afraid that, if the Ring corrupts him enough, then he will be seen as others see Gollum, and be treated as others treat Gollum.

The party were all gifted rope, cloaks and lembas(elven bread) by Galadriel. In this fantasy world, all things elven are somewhat magical. And the magic of the cloaks is that they are perfect camo in most natural environments. So, when surrounded by rocks, the cloaks appear as rocks. Ditto trees or grass.

I don't think Smeagol/Golum is wrong when he doesn't want Frodo to go through the gates around 29:20. He is conflicted and he can be trusted in what he says on and off. When Frodo covered Sam with the cloak, its the magic of the Elven cloak that makes them blend in with the surroundings and hide.

The ring was constantly messing with Frodo's senses and thoughts. He was hallucinating all over the place and not telling Sam about it. There's a lot of stuff that is making Frodo have questionable mental states. The only other person that has had exposure to this level or duration of the ring's power, is Smeagol. That horrible shared knowledge is why Frodo was compelled to feel mercy. Stupid, self destructive, gullible mercy, yes, but mercy. His mind was questionable, his mission was vital, his circumstances were dire, his decision was effected.

Frodo is effectively possessed. The ring is exerting its will over him. When Sam thwarted Frodo's attempt to put on the ring when the black rider was 3 feet away, for instance, it was the ring compelling Frodo to betray the group. For a hobbit, Frodo's decisions stand in contrast against his travel companions. He's a relatively good decision maker.

I know Frodo's behavior is frustrating you, but you have to understand that the ring is THAT powerful. We KNOW that he's acting out of character, that he is not this person, but he really can't help it. Look what the ring did to Gollum. Yes, Gollum "can't" be good because the ring absolutely warped/destroyed his soul - he had the ring for over 500 years. And Elrond already said how impressive it was that Frodo could resist even as much as he has already. If it's doing this to Frodo who can resist it more than most and who has only had the ring for a short time, imagine how corrupted Gollum is inside.

You seem to be missing the point with Gollum. Remember in Moria, Frodo said it was a pity that Bilbo hadn't killed Gollum - it was Gandalf who told Frodo not to be too quick to deal out death in judgement, and that Gollum would have some part to play before the end. Tolkien saw value in mercy, which is also why Aragorn spared Grima. No spoilers, but ultimately Frodo was right to show mercy, and Sam was wrong to doubt him. Same goes for Aragorn.

Since you've already seen all three, this is not a spoiler. If Frodo had killed Gollum when you wanted him to, the Ring would not have been destroyed. Frodo still would have fallen to its power, and Sam wouldn't have been able to stop him. The Nazgul would have gotten to Mt. Doom before anyone else, and they would have taken the ring from Frodo and returned it to Sauron. As Gandalf said, the pity of Bilbo could rule the fate of many. The same is true of Frodo's pity.

It’s so funny how you don’t like Frodo it’s been so long ago and I watched these movies so many times that I think I forgot that Frodo used to aggravate me as well but when you see what he goes through and the burden of the ring you can understand but I think you’re more of a Bilbo guy like a lot of us 😂

There is no such investment too deep into The Lord of the Rings. I saw the first film and thought it was great, but didn't quite understand what I was getting into. Watching with a friend that read the books as a kid, I still didn't fully appreciate it. Then I saw THIS. And I was completely enthralled and fell in love forever with the story and the lore, it all came together.

I hated on Frodo too in The Fellowship... but seeing the burden the ring is, I couldn't hate on him. Remember, especially when going into The Return of the King, THE RING WANTS TO BE FOUND. So it's influence is all the more powerful even now. Truthfully, it's amazing Frodo could resist so much

The Cloak was given to Frodo by Galadria ( The glowing lady-sorry name spelled incorrectly), before they continued on their journey up the river. The cloak had magical properties.😊

Seeing Characters behave stupidly is definitely frustrating, but Tolkien didn't do this by accident. The Man was in WWI, in the trenches, LOST two of his closest friends in that absolute BS/Farce of a war (The way the 'Leaders' conducted it, not the people who died fighting it), so he knows first-hand people who SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, still doing dumb things. Also, the Ring is trying to warp/control Frodo, turning him into what Gollum/Smeagol now are, so that influence affects Frodo/Others' thinking/rationing abilities. One of the things (And it was often the most difficult task of them all), that Sir Jackson and 'Co.' had to contend with, when it was decided to go with a trilogy (vs just one or two movies), is splicing the various scenes in a way that both honored what Professor Tolkien wrote, but also in ways that a modern day audience of film would find entertaining/captivating. Basically, in the books, Tolkien often writes MANY chapters of what 'This person/Group' is doing, and then swings back to others. If you ever read the books, you'll know what I'm talking about, and in some instances, Tolkien's time line is really skewed because he's writing about what some are doing well before or after what others are doing, in the next chapters. This confused me as a young adult first reading the books, and in 'The Appendices' discs which are also *AMAZING* Sir Jackson/Philipa/Others talk about it.

If you ask why Gandalf is somehowe curious when he is called "Gandalf" - it was not his original name. It was Olorin. Elves called him Mithrandir, dwarves - Tharkûn. He really had many names. :)

Stoped watching six minutes in. Gandalf: "It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment." Reactor: "Gandalf is so wise!" also Reactor as soon as Gollum shows up: calls for Frodo to kill Gollum and calls hmi stupid for his pitty. I just can't stand the hypocrisy.

If the had gone in through the gate without Sméagol stopping them, they’d have been captured and killed immediately, and Sauron would have gotten the ring back. Sméagol doesn’t even know that they’re planning to destroy the ring, he just knows that if they went in through the gate, Sauron would have the ring and everything would be over.

Best reaction to the reveal of Gandalf the White I've seen! loved it. The battle of Helm's Deep is one of my favourite parts of these movies, so I'm looking forward to part two. In regards to Frodo, as a bookreader, I was annoyed by him on my first watch too (he's quite a bit different in the books), but on my 100th or something re-watch, I find myself relating to him a lot.

You would have killed Gollum immediately and thus you would have failed the mission and likely been captured and killed, thats seriously if you even made it past the first movie. Frodo was well aware of the danger with Gollum, but remember even Gandalf said not to be eager to deal out death and judgement. He told Frodo that Gollum had a part to play and yet you would have ignored Gandalfs advice and killed him. Frodo realized Gollum would be useful. They were lost, Gollum got them through the swamps help them get to Mordor, Gollum kept them from going through The Black Gate where they would have most certainly been caught.

The Ring is eating Frodo alive from the inside: mind, heart and soul. It has the power to turn him into another Gollum, and he knows it. Frodo is gradually and irresistibly undergoing this process. He wants to save Gollum because only that way can he know that he himself can be saved from the same fate. If you are mortal, you do not possess the Ring. It possesses you. It is far more powerful; it was made by the greatest sorcerer in Middle-earth, and the most evil. His will is mightier than yours, no matter who you are. Remember, even Gandalf was afraid to so much as touch the Ring. Frodo has the hardest job in the world. In his place, no one would do better. Absolutely no one.

Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) did the helmet kicking scene many times (I think 20?). On his last attempt, he let out a genuine scream of pain because he broke his toe! It was so genuine that this scene made it into the movie...

So King Theoden of Rohan is the father of Theodred (the one who was wounded and died in the beginning) and the uncle of Eowyn and her brother Eomer, captain of the horse masters. Oh and Aragorn is older than Theoden and half elf.
