You did a beautiful job. By the end, she was confident, relaxed, and even enjoying working with you. She is a lovely little mare. I don't know what she is, but she is put together just right. Sometimes I think there is a big dollop of Thoroughbred in there, maybe racing quarter horse and Paint. Sometimes I think there might even be a bit of Rocky Mountain/Spotted Saddlehorse in there. Whatever she is, she is just really put together well. With the work you are putting on her, she is going to make someone a really nice horse. I used to buy horses that were headed for the kill pen, and some of them ended up making really nice horses. I learned from that that some really nice horses end up there, mostly because they were around people who know nothing about horses. I always kept the great jumping horse, Snowman, in the back of my mind. He was literally pulled out of the killer buyer's truck, after he had already been sold for slaughter, and ended up making a champion open jumper. I always figured that a good horseman can take literally any horse, find out what that horse is suited for, and at least get him started on that path. The horse might not be good for what you wanted him for, but he's good for something. He might not want to be a plow horse, but he might make a really good jumper. If you can find the niche for that horse, you might save his life. If he's useful, someone will want him.

It's those gaps, omissions and holes in their foundation which can cause the entire thing to go haywire and even collapse completely ... It's so much more difficult and time consuming to put scaffolding in place and rebuild than it would've been to start properly in the first place. And with far less risk, effort, expense and danger to the house - sorry, horse! - and its owner ...
@peartreeranch

@@peartreeranch What many people don't realise is, how much harder and, frankly exhausting, it is for the _horse_ , not 'just' for the trainer. The mental and physical effort is enormous and its so important that stressors are not allowed to accumulate and do further damage to the already-unstable 'structure'. Horses are such forgiving and generous creatures that they can rebound (almost) entirely from horrendous damage as a result of mistreatment - or plain incorrect training, done with no ill intent - but unless that rebound is managed carefully, it will tend to be fragile ...

The question is, will the owner be able to ride her? I have had horses that were tough, not as tough as she is but tough, and I got them where I could ride them, anyplace, anytime, but could never get the owners to be safely able to. I always offered unlimited free lessons as long as I had your horse in training. It was always the owners that needed the work more than the horses. It built my reputation because horses I trained stayed trained and were successful, but that wouldnt have happened if I hadnt been able to train the owners also.

I loved watching you talk her into finding those forward steps. And then finding those forward steps headed to the right, her bad way... i think you couldn't have ended in a better place. Watching this it is amazing that apparently this mare has ever been ridden before. She acts as if this is the first time under saddle - or rather, under a rider. Had she been a 'normal' colored horse without markings I'd say the owner has been shipped a completely different horse from the one in the sales video. This mare being a tobiano makes that a bit unlikely, but good heavens, she looks and acts (no forward at all, for instance) like a horse that has a weight on her back for the very first time. Even with suspicions like being drugged for the sales video, or things like 'learned helplessness' you would not expect that.
@peartreeranch
@peartreeranch 5 ай бұрын
Yes she seems to have not ever successfully done much of this ever. She was bought out of a kill pen so I don't think there is a sales video of her being ridden but I may be mistaken.
