I am hoping Valve introduces Linux to the masses more and more with SteamOS and that more programs are ported over to SteamOS so other Linux distros can just work with them. I just made the switch partially to Fed40/Nobara because it can still play most games and I dont play any games that require kernel level anticheat (most of those games are too damn sweaty anyways). Only thing I can't do work wise is use a program called BioTrackTHC because its .exe only as of the time of writing this and I haven't found a workaround other than having a windows partition/machine handy nearby.

@maskharat
@maskharat 29 күн бұрын
@@robertjames4908 Most anti-cheat runs well on linux/proton. Quite often it's simply a checkbox or a 1-line copy & paste addition to the config, download if the lib file and then uploading the lib file into the game package. Usually not even a recompile needed. Linux usually isn't the hurdle. The studios deciding 5 min of work for one person is too much. also MS won't be cutting kernel-level access for 3rd-party software. they are obligated to grant other software the same access their own software has. That's why every anti-virus software gets kernel-level access, since the MS solution does, too. Though would be nice if they'd actually take all extension software and not give it kernel access.

The problem with most games with anticheat is that the developers only support the Windows version of the anticheat (for example, Epic's own anticheat can run natively on Linux but Fortnite can't because Epic deliberately choose to not support the Linux version of its own anticheat inside of it). Microsoft making it harder to access their kernel would change nothing about this.

The "input" section of Steam Deck's patch notes has nothing to do with the OS, it's just that Steam Input now natively supports the ROG Ally. Steam Input (configurator) is what lets you rebind buttons and emulate KBM on controller. If a game supports the Steam Input API, the buttons can be mapped to game actions (so the ingame glyphs will also change depending what button you mapped the action to).

You wouldn't even need *physical* access to a system to exploit the vulnerability; just need to hijack and exploit a Kernel-level Anti-Cheat like Vanguard in order to push the malware to all Windows 10/11 users on a AMD-power system that can't/won't be patched. Technically; Playstation 4 ("Jaguar"), Playstation 5 ("Zen 2"), Xbox One ("Jaguar"), Xbox Series S/X ("Zen 2"), Steam Deck ("Zen 2"), ASUS ROG Ally/X ("Zen 4") & Lenovo Legion Go ("Zen 4") are all vulnerable as they all run AMD-made/designed SoC's. However, since Sony, Microsoft, Valve, ASUS & Lenovo have direct-communications with AMD, they're likely to be able to get patches made by AMD that can be pushed out before the exploit gets too widely exploited (especially Xbox, ROG Ally and Legion Go as those run Windows 10/11 where Kernel-level Anti-Cheats like Vanguard are promenant).

All that Intel's new 0x129 microcode update does is that it limits the max possible VID requests that the CPU sends to 1.55V, Intel has even publically said that that's what it does. 1.55V is still extremely high, it's just not as high as before as some CPUs were requesting upwards of around 1.6V. Intel is effectively stalling the degradation on these chips to just go outside outside of the warranty period.

I wouldn't necessarily base a switch from Windows to Linux on SteamOS. This is more about Proton, which can be used on virtually any distribution. Just try it for a few weeks. Ultimately, it can also be great fun to familiarise yourself with a new system. Ultimately, however, I would nevertheless like to thank Valve for their work in this area. Without Proton, the current upswing in Linux gaming would probably not have been possible.

Valve has a pretty great opportunity here to catch the eyes of people who don't use their gaming PC's for non-open source applications; even more so encouraging game developers to make ports for Linux. Even if you can't entirely switch to Linux it's more possible than ever to just use a secondary 250GB SSD for Windows to dual boot for any applications that you need that require Windows. Windows will never go away entirely for business reasons but making Linux more mainstream makes me hopeful that people will finally have enough of Microsoft's intrusion.

The "reveal" events for PC hardware are cool and all, but honestly I wouldn't mind the practice shifting to something more like a digital press release. The amount of money that is spent just for them to physically show off their newest toys and STILL give us misleading slides has got to be meme worthy. So much wasted time and capital for something that could effectively be an email. And honestly, after gearing up to lay off 15K people, it might not be the best optics to do exactly what I stated above. Which is blowing a bunch of money on an event that, itself, doesn't really generate that much hype or market anticipation. It's the actual product, specs, and data shown off at the event that creates market hype. Just give out a bunch of detailed slides and press info to the media outlets and youtubers, and watch the free marketing flow.

From what i read about this sinkhole, it requires flashing a specific part of the chip code (not even the bios). So it's not something an attacker can pull off remotely at all, it need physical access to the chip. Which means that if any consumer has this problem, it was done either at the factory or shop that assembled the computer. Where else can someone gain access to the cpu without you knowing? Doesn't sound like a huge deal at all for domestic consumers. Servers of course need to watch for this kind of stuff, a lot of people handle them...

With regard to installing steamOS on other devices: it drives my curiosity a little. What I'm hearing is that this is something that valve is supporting on their own which is interesting. Though, one thing that feels mentionable is that right now, vendors may still put together their own windows builds of things if they decide not to put efforts into steamOS The thing I feel like would need to happen is some kind of support program for valve - if vendors want their devices added, there needs to be a system to tell them how to get them up & running. If there's desire from valve & there's desire from vendors, then it might be possible to have stronger support, but it's certainly something worth thinking about. Kernel wise, it's not too much of a problem I bet, vendors need to establish drivers for the kernel itself, but another piece of the puzzle is if steamOS recognizes everything as well, so some coordination with everyone is going to be important

It’s been my thought that Valve shouldn’t bother with a SteamDeck revision and should instead tailor SteamOS to other handhelds. Offer Asus maybe a $50 or $100 incentive for each Ally sold loaded with SteamOS that logs in to Steam. Valve can get out of the hardware game while SteamOS handhelds are sold at more competitive pricing that entices consumers into Steam’s ecosystem. It’s a win for Steam, OEMs, and consumers.

Thank you! Another person who is actually being rational about the Ryzen 9700X and 9600X. I'm on 3950X I was not going to spend stupid money upgrading from AM4 to AM5 when Zen 4 came out, just to get a maybe 5% gain at 4K. With a new AM5 mobo chipset coming out in a matter of months too, it is also irrational to buy Zen 4 even if it is cheaper than Zen 5. Plus, I like a lot of people are waiting for Zen 5 x3D to see what that brings. So all the noise is just overblown seeing the 9700X and 9600X are not engineered for gaming but productivity and if using 50% of the power to get the same performance as Zen 4 equivalents at lower release MSRP, then that is a plus. Fine AMD could have given them a bit more juice, but the rage is crazy. I find it funny reviewers will say well if you're spending a $1000 on a GPU then $600 extra to get the RTX 4090 is nothing. Yet they don't apply the same logic to the new chipset features coming with X870 for Zen 5. Anyways, exciting news that you may soon be officially joining the Linux world when SteamOS is out for all systems. Been using Linux since exclusively 2016 and have not missed Windows in anyway

When I run prime95 small ffts on my 13600kf it gets super hot and consumes about 300 Watts on stock BIOS settings after the newest MSI patch. That's a hotter than it ran before on stock settings. But the most annoying thing is that it does not reach 5.1 GHz on all P-Cores anymore ( It only reaches 4.6 GHz ish). Only after I undervolted it as far as I could I got it back on 5.1 GHz. I think they just increased the average voltage so all the already broken CPUs can run stable. But at the cost of maybe damaging them even more? (That is only speculation of course). And I know that prime95 is not my average workload but it still shows that they did crazy stuff here. At least when you run your CPU on stock settings.
