Nirmala Seetharaman pointed fingers at Congress saying you all imposed Sales Tax on health insurance. True that. However, situation was different. When Congress imposed those taxes, IRDAI kept the premiums steady. But now IRDAI has allowed the health insurance companies to increase the premiums as per their economics. Even so, the Sales tax was around 15 percent not 18 percent. Very cleverly she avoided mentioning that BJP increased it by 3 percent. When Congress imposed those taxes, the poor did not have 5 lakhs coverage. It follows that for equity, the government must reduce GST on health insurance premiums for at least 10 lakhs coverage. Right? Otherwise, some are more privileged citizens of this country than the others. If government is foregoing GST on coverage for the poor, and also paying premiums for them, then writing off GST on premium of 10 lakhs coverage is an extremely reasonable demand.
