If only we knew whether this & future govts. would definitely pay the State Pension & not means test it. As it is, it seems too risky to make voluntary contributions.

What kind of madman would invest in a pension when the Government are intent in punishing people that save . Look at the latest fuel allowance farce. People that waste all their money get it & people that save & plan their future get refused it . Go figure . You should NEVER EVER get punished for doing the right thing & saving for your retirement.

Very informative thanks. Do you not subscribe to the common idea that state pension will cease to exist and that making voluntary back payments to NI could be a potentially poor investment?

You're welcome! This is a tricky one as my guidance is always based on current regulation and rules but can see why some may be hesitant.

Question is the purchasing additional years for any time period I had several years of contracting out and therefore won’t have the full 35 years of NI but it was a long time back. I thought it was limited to fairly recent years.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking but you have until 5 April 2025 to pay voluntary contributions to make up for gaps between April 2006 and April 2016 if you're eligible. After 5 April 2025 you'll only be able to pay for voluntary contributions for the past 6 years.
