I’m driving myself insane awaiting my appeal decision. I dropped out mid semester due to a sensitive medical diagnosis. I just appealed with documentation from my medical provider(including dates from the time I dropped out). I’m so worried I won’t be approved. The committee meets the 16th so I assume my answer will be the following day. My nerves are SHOT!!

Unfortunately, many schools will offer less aid after the freshman year of college. You could try appealing your financial aid package.

When my friend’s two kids applied for to FAFSA for the 2022/2023 school year when it opened their daughter (finishing freshman in college) received more money than their son (finishing senior in high school). They both had a 4.0gpa. Their daughter got quite a bit more money. Then their oddest son decided to go back to college after a two year break just a week ago and applied for fafsa and received even more money than the first two. Should the graduating senior appeal since their is now a third child going to college? Is that a financial reason to appeal?
@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would be a reason to appeal since the third child going to college will be a financial strain to the family. This change happened after the original FAFSA application so it would be a good reason to appeal.

What if you don't have a big crisis? My reason is that my parents are simply not helping me financially. I have to figure out a way to pay for college. They are healthy and living but are not helping me fiancially with college just because they want me to deal with the cost. How should I go about asking for more money with my situation?
@TheScholarshipSystem2 ай бұрын
Explain your situation. Some financial aid officers may be understanding and try to help as much as they can. The more documentation you can provide the better. Show proof of all the expenses you cover on your own with your employment and then they can see that you truly are independent.

What happen if one of my parents made 100,000 per year, yet they have over 100,000 in student debts, medical bills, and currently paying for a mortgage?

It may be worth talking to the financial aid office at your college about submitting a special circumstances appeal. While we can't give you a yes or a no on if it would be accepted, as it's highly subjective to the reviewer, it's worth inquiring.

So if my pell grant was like 3000+/- i can appeal that? Or does this only apply to loans?
@TheScholarshipSystem8 ай бұрын
Pell grants are federal grants that are calculated via FAFSA. You can't really appeal for additional Pell grant money, but you can appeal for state based aid and/or institutional aid, which is at the school's discretion.

I was accepted off the wait list at my #1 school. Super excited! My #2 school has lower cost of attendance (tuition, room and board). In addition, my number two school offered a 4000 per year merit scholarship. Can I request to be considered for merit award at my #1 school even though I came off the wait list? Any downside?
@TheScholarshipSystem6 ай бұрын
It wouldn't hurt to ask! Most likely they will say that they have awarded all the aid they have to give, but it's worth a shot.

What about a domestic violence situation with my ex husband? He did prison time for it…I’m about to write my appeal and I’m very anxious. This happened 6 years ago & caused me to not be able to finish my class

Schools should consider your situation and appeal. Good luck!

@@TheScholarshipSystem Hi,my situation is I was in the nursing program and working, I was very stressed with work and the program I was doing good but then I failed one of the exams they gave me another re take and did worst on the second time, the instructor said I had to withdraw from the nursing program and re apply. I received a letter from the school financial aid department saying due to withdrawing from the course I have to Re pay part of my Pell grant since I did not complete the the percentage. I can’t pay that back I used it all for certain things I needed for class, how can I appeal this? I am re applying to the program and now I know I cannot work full time and school full time.

My parents are not going to pay for any of my college, but our finances will make me not be able to receive much aid. Is this a good reason to appeal?
@TheScholarshipSystem9 ай бұрын
It never hurts to appeal. However, you may consider a variety of schools, since not every school costs the same or awards the same aid. Each school has different appeal policies.

Would both parents recently filing chapter 7 bankrupcy (with no liquidable assets or savings) be considered for receiving more financial aid? We will not qualify for parent plus loans etc.

Great question - your best bet would be to contact the financial aid office at the school for a financial aid appeal. They'll be able to take that into consideration.

What about a dependency appeal.
@TheScholarshipSystem2 жыл бұрын
Dependency appeals (to get a student declared independent on their FAFSA) are usually considered to be a separate type of financial aid appeal within the financial aid department but can certainly be a valid reason to appeal. You'll want to contact the financial aid department at that school to see what documentation is required for that, as it can vary somewhat from school to school.

Hope getting evicted is considered a good reason

Many financial aid offices will take a student's circumstances into account when reviewing an appeal. A written explanation with supporting evidence is usually enough for financial aid offices to consider adjusting a financial aid award package.
