The minimum wage didn't increase. The reason why Minerva reduced work-study hours was in response to student feedback about financial struggles - many students have multiple jobs and need to work to pay their tuition. Because of this, Minerva decided to pay students more than minimum wage (before it was ~15/hr which is the minimum wage in San Francisco but they increased it to ~20/hr) and reduce the maximum number of hours to 7 hours/week instead of 10 hours/week. Now students cannot work more than 7 hours on average a week so they have more time for other activities like academics, other jobs, and cultural immersion while getting paid the same. Also, I believe that the 10 hours/week maximum on average was set by our visa requirements - students on an F1 visa are not allowed to work more than 20 hours on any one week when class is in session and the average per week is what Minerva recommends so that you don't run out of hours working (and thus paid) by the end of the semester (you can only work up to 300 hours on total at Minerva, after which your work-study ends). Hope this helps!

Also you aren't allowed to work in your *freshmen year* in the United States outside of on-campus employment (a.k.a. work-study) under an F1 visa but after the first year you technically can. However, under an F1 visa, your employment should always be related to your studies or career and further them (so you technically aren't allowed to work at McDonalds, but should be pursuing a job or internship in a place that develops your professional skills whether during summer or in-semester work). The 20 hours a week rule still applies during classes though. And in your first year it's 0 hours a week because you can't be holding any position that a U.S. citizen could technically hold and get paid for, even if you're not getting paid for it (so no external internships either). One more thing is that Minerva doesn't cover ALL your expenses, they expect you to pay something for your education even if that's only 100 USD (if that's all you can afford) so they won't give you a "full-ride" but they WILL cover most of the cost if you demonstrate need.

So... if you have no money at all and your parents cannot support you, you actually cannot attend Minerva because even though your tuition fees would be much cheaper you still couldn't afford the plane tickets, rent, visa...? Is it realistic Minerva's work-study arrangement could cover all of that? Thanks

Hey! Some of us work in the summer and save up to pay for flights, etc. I know some students who also use their work-study money for that but the possibility of that depends on big your personal expenses are throughout the year. Hope this helps xx

@@Dinaraxyz hi, Dinara, I was just wondering if you decide to do a summer internship to save up for flights and visa costs etc. Does Minerva house you or are you responsible for your accommodation during this time?

I got that students have to pay for the travel costs themselves like plane tickets and the Visa costs, but does Minerva take care of the Visa request... or does the student have to take care of getting the visa as well? I'm interested in this because I haven't seen an answer to personally and it really does interest me. The reason for my question is, IF the student has to pay for Visa costs does that include the student doing the paperwork and having the risk of getting the Visa denied, or if Minerva takes care of the paperwork the student just has to pay for the fees... Thank you and fellow Minerva students for all the information they have been giving out it personally means a lot since I'm highly interested in minerva! Good luck next semester!!

Hi Dinara.I want to apply for Minerva as a binding enrollment applicant but i am confused as to whether completing the challenges first and then applying for financial aid or do it simultaneously?.And second, whether i can apply for all the three types of financial aids (i.e.Low-Interest Loans,Minerva Work-Study,Need-based Scholarship),if i cant afford the tuition fees entirely?

for what they give to students, it is CHEAP! I got into a private university in Milan, got a partial scholarship of 2,5k euros, and still have to pay 8k euros. plus rent for an apartment, which is necessary for me. if you get into Minerva, you're very fortunate!

I have a stupid question, I'm not fluent in english so I don't understand what the term "financial aid" means?, does it mean that they will charge you less money? or does it mean that you pay less but eventually you'll have to pay it back?, because later in the video she mentioned loans, so it''s the same thing that loans or is it a different thing? I hope someone can answer :), cause I'm very interested in doing this, but my economy it's very low so for me 30.000 dollars, it's toooo much and it's 4 years, so paying that amount of money every year it's literally impossible for me right now, still, I have a very good feeling about this university and I really want to travel and study here.
