This is spot on . From personal experience , I would say you feel much more connected to the business as a commercial business partner rather than as a financial analyst . I would summarize it as , a financial analyst has the GL view while the commercial business partner has the customer view and what makes each customer tick

For someone who is at the early levels of a training contract in audit with the hope to move into a finance business partnering role. What would you say are key areas to notice while working on audits and develop more of an understanding of the finance business partnering role over the next few years?

Hi Paul, are you saying FP&A has more potentials as it can be promoted to CFO while FBP transition is more flat oriented?

Are the skill sets from a finance business partnering role transferable across industry (ie F&B industry transfer to FMCG/ shipping)?

Hi Paul, did you find the culture at top 4 much different to the companies you’ve worked at in Industry? I.e less corporate and more friendly people in finance?

Do you feel the need to keep up your financial reporting skill set, I am in commercial analysis as well and feel out of touch with my accounting roots.

So if a person works in public practice... Is it possible for that person to be promoted to a managerial level and than be stuck there and never reach the levels such as a director?

It really depends on the company and situation. My general rule of thumb is for every 3 years be looking to move; either up or across - as long as you are pushing to move you wont get stuck and you will continue to develop etc and have more skills to show for it. You will only get stuck of you just relax and settle into doing the same thing.
