If you manage to read this, don't back down from the $100/week idea into VOO or whatever for your kid to get at 18 or later. The two greatest financial lessons I learned and carried me through adulthood came from my parents doing exactly this, but also, started very early putting away 10% of everything I earned. I had a piece of paper that started with a $2 weekly allowance, putting 20c away, next week it was already at 40c, I loved seeing it grow that I increased it to 20 or 50% and tried to get jobs everywhere I could to increase it, never felt guilty about spending as I had this savings. "Spend less than you earn" and I've never owed interest or been in financial stress. I'm financially free to do whatever I want now at 33. Basically semi-retired at this point and I really put the beginning of it all down to these lessons I was taught early.

That probability convo was a painful listen boys... Flipping a coin or having a kid is 50/50 no matter how many heads/males you get in a row. If you flip a coin and get 10 heads in a row, it is still 50% chance to get a head or a tail the next flip. However if you flip the coin a million times it will eventually level out to 50/50

On probability, what you're thinking of is probabilities in game theory. Mathematically probability changes as new outcomes are introduced. A better example would if there were an odd number of flips, because then you couldn't divide by two, getting a 50/50 result evenly across flips. But as more flips occur and switches from even to odd and back again, the probability changes. Also there should be a finite amount of outcomes, so as outcomes are exhausted, probability changes. Like 60 times heads can be flipped max, 30 times tails, 5 times toss up across 95 flips. So coin tossing isn't the best example, but things like election results, sports betting, blackjack etc are

Love the honest conversations about childhood allowances. I agree with Joe and Christian. Kids grow up too fast already. My opinion as a dad of two young boys is let them enjoy being kids while they can. They have their whole lives to worry about retirement and finances. When the time is right, parents will know when to teach and show them how to mange money. That age is different for every kid. Ultimately, how they are raised and seeing how parents manage money is the best teacher. Actions always speak louder than words. AT THE END OF THE DAY, DO WHATEVER THE F YOU WANT! 😝 1:24:57

Idk if any of you (Joe, Christian, Maxx) read these comments but the probability section was very off. You were talking about independent probabilities (Joe having a boy or a girl is not dependent on his friends and same goes for heads / tails) so the probability of the next flip or child is ALWAYS 50/50 no matter what the previous flip or child is.

The coin thing is called the gamblers fallacy.. every individual spin is 50/50 always.. you complicate it a little when you’re trying to guess consecutive outcomes. So your probability stays the same but the odds (not sure if using the right word there) changes. Each flip 50/50.. however betting getting heads 5 times reduces your odds cause each spin is a 50% chance to lose.. you took 5 50% chances consecutively.. when realistically out of 5 spins you would statistically have a 2.5 chance to get heads and/or tails as the outcome.. so betting 5 out of 5 is a “lower odds “ % cause the probability of that overall set is still 2.5 heads 2.5 tails aka 50%.. you’re essentially betting against the odds/probability. But that “cap” of 5 spins is self imposed.. the coin technically has infinite spins.. which is why you could get 5 consecutive heads spins.. cause over an infinite amount of spins any combo is possible, the only constant is you have 50% chance to get that side of the coin on each spin. This is why something like a roulette table has the green 0/00, to reduce the 50/50 odds for red or black.. cause if it were always 50/50, as long as you had enough money, statistically you could always win your money back. However the green makes it like 47% which gives the house an advantage.. as well as most people not having unlimited funds (it’s also why they have betting limits so you can’t keep doubling your bet to win your money back) so that 3% difference plus rules really can clean someone out.. and this gamblers fallacy is trying to strategize that well it’s landed on red 3 times.. next one has to be black! And then it lands on red or green.

Lol yeah the coin convo was pretty braindead. It’s a fallacy that the odds change and they are always 50/50. Even if you have spun heads 99 times, it’s still a 50% chance to get heads on the last spin

Maxx, I think you should start it the way you are thinking by doing it without telling them but not actually teaching them about the market and all of that til they turn a teenager, once they turn around 15-16 make it a mandatory chore to work as an intern with peoples company (doesn’t have to be sour strips or alphalete ) but it is something they can learn. Then once they get legal to drive buy them a car as a way to congratulate them for those years as an intern. Teaches them that 10-12 of them learning to be responsible 13-15 becoming financially intelligent 15-16 interning for companies and learning business from other people than just you just in case they are wanting to learn but not learn from their parent (all kids rebel) 16-18 working / earning driving. But it gives you 6-8 years of financial control that you have guidance over them as their parent. Which should be more than enough. So by the time they turn 25-30 all those 6-8 years of financial control/ Chore money will gain them not necessarily financial freedom but a cushion that will allow them to go the route they want to go when they turn of age to access the funds. 1:33:43

Each flip is an independent event it is 50/50 every flip you could get 100 million heads in a row and the next flip will still be 50/50 The next flip would have to have its probability altered because of the previous flip for it to be dependent and the odds changed What you are describing would be like if you had a deck of cards and you wanted to see if you could pull out an Ace and a King, the odds for the first card would be 4 out of 52 but since you took a card out, you altered the deck so now the next chance would be 4 in 51

Each coin flip is assumed to be independent of the last, so every individual coin flip has a 50% change of being heads, 50% chance of being tales. The previous coin flips do not affect the next coin flip. You can flip 999 coins heads in a row, and it's still 50% chance the next flip is heads. However I'm sure there are aspects of having children that are not literally 50/50 chance. No clue though. An example where a previous "flip" would affect the probablility of the next "flip" is like clothing brand launches. If the previous launch was successsful, then the next launch is more likely to be successful because more people were exposed to the brand from the successful previous launch.
