This little guy was a cage bird (pet) that didnt make it, and ended up getting mounted here. It had been sitting in the freezer for at least 4 years. It was kind of dried and I had to rehydrate it before I can skin it. As much as I tried to zoom in so you can see more, but you will still see more of my hands than the bird.. it was tiny. Anyway I hope you enjoy the show.

Absolutely do! But don't start with something this small unless you want to tear your hair out 😂 Get a crow or pheasant or chicken to start with if you decide to go through with it, all are pretty easy to get and pretty easy beginner material

They are the more smaller the more difficult, same with mammals. Do you have some advice for sewing these thin skins? it is easy to rip them, or it's just sew with extreme care. Thanks Ben

Awesome display. I want to mount a parakeet, do you know what size eyes I need? And where to get them from? Thank you.
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
Glad you like the video. The eyes on parakeets can vary from one species to another. After skinning it you can measure it yourself. And you can also search for online taxidermy eye supplies. Cheers.

is it harder to position the eyes when you use the real skull like that?
@ArtofTaxidermy

Yes. Because the skull is not being handled freely.

@@ArtofTaxidermy so when I work with blackbird size and less its better to just skin to the beak and work from there. Thanks for the advice. Ive been reading a lot of books about bird taxidermy because it's something I want to learn, but each source explains it diffrently to me which is a bit confusing.

@ArtofTaxidermy

I am high school student who has been practicing taxidermy on small birds with my bio teacher and we struggle the most with putting the skin through the cranium again after removing the brains and eyes. Any tips? Also awesome work!
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniella .. it can be different on different birds. Some birds head won’t invert easily and of course won’t slide out either. Like waterfowls .. you either need to cut the neck skin open and sew again after putting everything back. Or skin out the skull totally from around the beak.
