These Triumph engines were prone for the crank thrust washers to wear out and the crank would move. I remember replacing a clutch in one only to find that the crank was being pushed forward when the clutch pedal was depressed resulting in difficulty in selecting gears!

Now that you have a new block, I do think that the car should be restored to original spec., but I really like the idea of fitting a Stag V8 - maybe the next "Stag" project?

I'm sure keeping it as standard as possible is the right route. The body/chassis is worth it it's so good. My Dad bought a brand new 2000 Mk1 facelift model in 1966. I took my driving test in it in April 1971. By summer 71 it had been traded for a Peugeot 504 injection which I also loved.

Great idea to rebuild an appropriate engine for the car. I had a Dolomite Sprint prior to my new Stag and the only engine to replace when it blew up was another Sprint engine. Hence I’ve gone for a Triumph V8 in my Stag. We have plenty of guys down here in Perth running very reliable and fast 2.0 and 2.5s in sedans, GT6s and Spitfires. Great sounding engines at full send

Just a second tip I found the fuel evaporated in the carbs and fuel pump whenever I shutdown after a good run so it took some cranking over several revolutions before it would fire up don't get into the habit of pulling the choke out as that does not help but floods the bores and causes premature ware. I rerouted the fuel line and got a stronger mechanical fuel pump.

So pleased you are sticking with the straight six donk. They are so under-rated for their performance and still return a very good MPG considering the age they were designed. One suggestion now that you are looking at rebuilding the beast, drop a TR5 spec cam in to give it a little more low down torque and pull through the rev range. A set of extractors will help to make her breathe easy too and get those gasses away from the exhaust outlets quicker. They can take quite a wild camshaft and get great power returns from cam mods, changing to roller rockers and such , but the simplest for normal cruisy road usage would be to give it a tickle with a TR5 cam and allow it to breathe with some headers. Two minor points but they add a lot more pleasure to the experience and economy of the wee beasty. All the best.

Arry.. Ive just watched this video.. Good stuff.. Funnily enough I bought the 2500s from France 2 weeks ago with the spare engine.. Haven't driven it yet as it needs a new clutch slave cylinder which is hopefully being fitted tomorrow.. I'm in Southampton so only up the road from you.. Good choice for the car these engines if put together correctly they are bullet proof and will last for ever they do run hot so require a clean good flow radiator as in the stag, my suggestion would be to put an extraction manifold on while you are doing the car up it realy helps performance i had the engine balanced and turned using SAH parts and it went like a rocket , I had great fun with these cars in the past.

The guy who said the high oil prices are deliberate is 100% right. The world is not short of oil but the circumstances have been created to allow OPEC and speculators to dictate the prices. Prices will not be falling any time soon (if ever). It will get worse, because Russia no longer has the multinationals to operate and maintain its infrastructure. Oil and gas wells though permafrost MUST be kept flowing. When they cool, the ground freezes and crushes the well. The only option is to seal the now scrap well. Sadly that wont happen so we can expect considerable gas leaks (more greenhouse effect) and oil spills into the Siberian wilderness.

Electric is all well and good if as we have a home charger.BUT you try and use the infrastructure such as it is to charge on the fly in the UK.Its so stressfull and limited its a joke as it stands.Expect to run out of volts and the cost of the chargers is alot.Its all in private hands and they know they can charge per kw/h pretty well what they want.Instavolt are the dearest and even at a tenner a gallon for regular fuel once you dial in the agro its almost balances out.There is no such thing as cheap motoring and never will be.

That's what I would have done , ! , Good choice , going electric soul destroying , soon we will have choices with fuel like hydrogen on demand quickly developing now so using very little petrol , can't wait for update !

Being as the old thrust washers were prone to failure, would needle rollers washers work better? Maybe they are not thin enough. Maybe the (presumed) lack of oil would take them out anyway.

There is no real reason for Fuel prices to rise. Here in Australia ours is rising as fast as everyone elses but our fuel comes from Singapore,made from oil sourced from Vietnam. I have dug deep into electric cars and it's a giant con. My interest started when I could see obidens policy starting to bite 18 months ago and I have a 1962 Mercedes 220SE coupe with no running gear. I was going to try and get a written off Tesla and transplant the running gear. Everyone else interested in doing this has also considered the idea,thus,no write offs to be had easily. Fast Matt here on YT has done the Tesla swap with a 1948 Jag. He has done a brilliant job ,which is to be expected from an ex Tesla engineer. Then there is the cost,along with petrol prices going crazy (greedily) electricity is following too with our government removing price controls on electricity. But electric cars will never be common even though I see Teslas everywhere here including a mates S85 .

Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS AND TEBBVEN ORDERS)!!

We'll be OK in the UK. The classic car movement is too big, although I agree over the years, there will be fewer petrol stations.
@liveroom4235

Energy /petrol prices are going up because of falling supply and refinery capacity issues due to a lack of investment in the oil / gas industry over the past 10 years as a result of the green agenda. Why mention Brexit in this context because most countries are suffering the same problem because of those misguided policies.
@ArryTheStag
@ArryTheStag 2 жыл бұрын
One factor was the fact that we were short of Lorry Tanker drivers a few months ago that caused a mass panic buy of fuel at the time - largely because of the impact of Brexit policies and employment rules.
@liveroom4235
@liveroom4235 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArryTheStag the shortages were caused by panic buying because of newspaper articles claiming there were going to be shortages. There are tanker driver shortages all across Europe and the USA which have nothing to do with Brexit. If you research why the shortages occured because of panic buying you'll understand it had nothing to do with fuel or driver shortages. Please stop believing the what you read in MSM and do your own research and you'll quickly understand much of what's being reported is complete nonsense.

Electric cars will never be popular or green it's just a joke to think that electric vehicles will ever replace internal combustion engines
@ArryTheStag
@ArryTheStag 2 жыл бұрын
I share your concerns that electric isn't as green as we're all being told. Yes at the point of use it's seen to be a way to go. But when you see what it takes to make the batteries out of all sorts of heavy metals and what to do with them after their working lives, then I think the balance tips the other way. Hydrogen for me is an interesting idea, which maintains the combustion engine at its heart. However, as ever it's a commitment by Government and Fuel Companies toward the infrastructure development that's key. I have regular fuel anxiety right now with a 3.0L Mitsubishi Shogun we own. It's LPG converted, but there are precious few stations selling Autogas any more and those that are, are pulling out of it daily. Combine that with the need to keep the car fuelled with E5 not E10 green petrol also makes for very odd behaviour at petrol forecourts.. trying to find the right pump that's got it!! ...Either blocking people behind, when on the face of it from their point of view I should pull forward to the two available other pumps in front of me! Or, queuing up behind someone to get to the right pump, even though there are other punps clearly free and no-one else is using them (course they don't have E5, but the driver in front is not to know that!). 'Appy Days?? Best Wishes TR Tony
