I always loved them. My Dad almost bought one in 1977, but a P6 was a better idea for a family LOL! My Mum still talks about it to this day, she absolutely loved them. Later they had a couple of 2,5 sedans, as did I. The little V8 sounds great. I have thought a lot about the Daimler 2.5 V8 and wondered why after Jaguar came into the mix, there was no consideration for that engine? It was a pretty well performing engine for it's size back in the day.

Ah that's alright 200 mile. A mate bought a Norton Commando in Adelaide South Australia and tried to ride it back 1000 Km to Gippsland Victoria. He made about 250 Km. His Dad came over from Gippsland with his van to the rescue. A bit of a similar reaction from all our mates before the attempt.... you sure you want to risk it? Lovely bike though.

Lack of Oil at the top end usually causes the rocker shaft to get worn into ruts on this engine but not much else unless its ignored completely. Then the big problem is a new rocker shaft and getting the old oil end stop out. My shaft went but amazingly the rocker bearings were fine. You may also find that the inlet manifold bolts may have been lose causing the back three cylinders to run hot. I had this problem after an engine short block rebuild on my PI. Oval piston bores and lots of piston slap needed fixing.

too bad that engine is probably the worst v8 ever made

Hiya Logan - I understand your view but in reality the main problem with the Stag V8 was with BL's Quality Control (or the lack of it!) e.g. Casting sand left in the blocks prior to being built (still being discovered today!), causing hot spots; causing blocked galleys and blowing head gaskets. Dealers fixed the gaskets only for the over heating to happen all over again a few months later! This was one of the main reasons the car finished early (production only from 1970-1977) and it got chucked out of the USA for unreliability. Once those things were fixed however we find that the engines are now very reliable (as long as well serviced, with timing chains replaced at every 35k miles or so). And believe it or not, there are still 46% of all Stags (25,939) ever made that are still on the road today and thriving (and driving big miles some of them) after 55 years. And the 1980's trend for swapping the Triumph engine out to a Rover V8 unit has long since ceased and in fact swung back the other way, so that these days, there is a high appreciation for the original Triumph V8 unit. All the best Logan - feel free to join us on a weekend for more at www.arrythestag.com/saturday-sockets Kind regards TR Tony

I was never brave enough to do it. But a guy who was specialising in Stags back in the late issues. He replaced the studs with bolts. I had stainless steel.atuds.made and still applied anti corrosion. Not for the threads, that's not the problem. It's the shank against alloy head that the stud seizes.

Hi TR, Harry Metcalfe ("Harry's Garage") has a very recent video up where he reviews the new car market which appears to be diving because A. the love affair with electric cars is fading, and B. no private buyer wants all the surveillance and intervention technology now standard on all new cars, and which adds between £ 5 - 10,000 to the price. The comments column was full of people who've bought a nineties or noughties model and restored it to new - budget is the same as for a new car, but they're a hoot to drive.

Thanks for your reply ... Robsport have these “grommets” . they need shaving with a file so they fit into the button and lock mechanism end ... they are black plastic so easily filed ... these same grommets apparently fit the door looks ......also if you have a new boot lid the aperture at the mechanism end needs opening up as the connecting bar ..... button to mechanism rod .....when the button is pushed “ IN” fouls on the opening... so again using a file open up the aperture....thanks again... hope it helps other people

If he continues to take care of Eddie in this way, he is the owner of a better grand touring vehicle than any of the hybrid SUV's now on the market.

Amazing car, someone has put a lot of effort into refurbishing it. mt freind had one in the late 70s but even then he had swapped the engine for a ford.I didnt even know that those "double Dolomite" engines still existed on old Staggs. I dont know how unreliable they are or just need a lot of unusual maintainance. Must have cost a fortune.i bet you did what I do when bidding for something i really want on e bay and put max price 50,000 quid

The only thing I can add to your list is broken main bearing caps. I can see your local to me and I worked at Barnes engineering in the 70s and 80s. And saw a few with broken caps which we had to line bore replacements. The Stag certainly kept us busy then and I would be the first to say one of the worst engines to come out of British Leyland. But I would have one in a heart beat. Such a beautiful car with a beautiful sound track.

Stag engine reliability when up together is a lot better now. Back then it really was a combination of poor working practices and a lack of quality control in its manufacture that was the cause of so many issues that could have easily been picked up! All the best TR T

Having owned & rebuilt a Stag many years ago, we all knew then the issues. One issue with converting to the Rover V8 motor was the engine did not rev as high. 6500 on the Triumph vs 5500 on the Rover. So without converting the diff to something with a different ratio the car was too slow. After having a lot of powerful sports cars since then, I have recently purchased a Lovely 2001 Tvr Chimaera 450. These engines have a rev limit of 6500. So with a little work on the Rover engine it would be a suitable upgrade for a non purist. Yes you are correct the Stag was a amazing car. I had the hard top on pulleys on the garage roof above the car for easy storage. Keep up the vids. I'm doing quite a few on the Tvr at the moment. Steve.

I cant believe people are still saying that the problem with their engine is casting sand found in the block, this may have been the case 40 or 50 years ago but all of these engines must by now have been rebuilt at least once or twice and the real reason for them needing rebuilds now is that they are just worn out again.

Great fun , I like the stag engines , iv got a stag engine inboard a van guess what , yep it's fine , built stag engines , had them in for services, no problems, in fact most stags now are reliable, true they had quality issues , cheap gaskets , no block cleaning, etc ,worst still people using tap water , instead of proper coolant, thanks for sharing. !

I went to that Guildford get together about 20 years ago. I didn't take my cars, as they aren't show cars. Bloke there said I should have taken my Dolomite Sprint, as there wasn't a single one there/they would have been happy just to see mine. At that stage it and the Stag were my "get to work" cars. There used to be a Brit car show at the Waroona showgrounds in October or so, went for a few years. I have taken my Jag, Stag, and Sprint to that. But then there was something that went on with the council regarding insurance or something; either way it stopped. Shame, it was a great get together, they filled the oval with Brit cars. The only "meeting" I get to these days is the Xmas kids bike ride in Oct/Nov. Last time I went, 800 bikes, and my BSA was the only one there, and oldest bike as well (63). Might get the 74 Trident ready for that. Thanks for posting this. Good to see.

I saw on Grand Tour that Capt Slow paid 27k for his Stag (and it was more reliable than Hamster’s Capri 25k or Clarkson’s Monte Carlo (75k was mentioned) whoch shocked me. The 1950s car market has been declining to the levels of pre war cars (saw a stunning 1959 plymouth fury 2 door V8 for $26k the other day, so cheap) 1960s cars ae starting to drop and 1970s will be next. Unless these cars were bonded with as a youth, the dream of owning one will be rare. I was born in the 1960s and in my youth a Michelloti designed sharp convertible was everywhere. But my first cars were swiftly moved from 1970s wrecks to 1980s hot hatched and turbos. I appreciate a Stag but my dream cars are younger. A late 80s XJS is my current classic. Stags will drop compared to the market, despite being so sharp suited.

E Types and SLs are worth more for good reason. The Stag community is always trying to talk up values - and downplay shortcomings. The Stag's value has always been in being cheeper than better made, better realised classics with greater histories. It does have an engine, and chassis made down to a price. It IS based on a saloon - and looks it. It sits higher and is narrower than contemporaries. It's a 60s car made in the 70s. Sure it's pretty, the engine sounds lovely when it's working. It's not equivalent to an E Type or SL. A rover P6, while a saloon is a better car all round. As a budget classic, the Stag its great. If that budget gets too high, what are you paying for?

Still 46% of Stags on the road after some 50 years out of the 24,000 that were made and was top end Triumph at the time. Love the E Type (XKE in the States) and the Sl and P6 of course! Each to their own I say, it's all about enjoying the cars and the people around them! All the best TR T
