I'm in the middle of prototyping an unusual consumer electronic device that will eventually need to be manufactured, and I have been thinking about a lot of what you mention - I have questions around a custom boards and parts vs off-the-shelf and such. I'm in the early stages of the process though...

We almost always resort to custom boards to save money at production levels. During initial concept prototyping, using off-the-shelf boards and repurposing parts from teardowns is helpful to move quickly.

Hi Cally , so everything you mentioned is what I’ve been experiencing. Directly contacting manufacturers who tout themselves as contract manufacturers can’t be bothered I guess. I like the idea of getting recommendations. I have a patented kitchen product that I would like to get manufactured domestically. You need to think about licensing or partnering. We can make anything in the US but economically not all products are feasible due to price or volume. The hurdle is in having access to a large enough customer audience where the investment risk is low. Partnering gives you access to that audience.

I am at that exact stage where I got patent pending, got a trademark, built my prototype, and find myself in no-mans-land. Is it a better idea to work with a company who can take my prototype and refine it, built the drawings and help find a manufacturer? Or should I find an engineer, auto cad designer, etc to get to a final prototype and final drawings and approach manufacturers myself?

We do not buy ideas. I provide coaching to grow product businesses. As a product development and manufacturing company, we partner with a very limited number of companies to make and sell their product. These companies always have a budget and a sales record.

I'm not up on all lingo. I have first invention with Davison. Second needs nothing more then the prepared presentation I have to understand it. I'm not looking to start business or run my own company. Looking for manufacturers to purchase license make an sell my product. I'm willing to sell outright for right price. Otherwise. A one time upfront payment an percentage of sales. Currently patent pending. I can email you privately to give details further bout product. Taken two established multimillion dollar industries. Both been round long time an neither are going anywhere ever. Nice cuz cuts down on the finding a market. Knowing it's not a fad that will fade the consumers are already buying an using.
