Find Dry Punk Wood Fire Tinder When Everything Is Wet

Punk wood is quite underutilized as a viable fire starter. In this video Lonnie shows various examples of where to find dry punk wood even during or after a hard and lengthy rain storm. Once charred, punk wood is an excellent material for survival situations due to it's ability to catch and grow a "cool" temperature spark such as is generated from flint and steel or in modern times, a saw blade back and a broken piece of quartz.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

Excellent vid! if it’s been raining look for sheltered tinder. Be it punk, birch bark, cedar bark.... pro tip: if it’s still raining keep that tinder dry when you’re trying to light it. Build a little A-frame out of ash bark or what ever you can find to keep it dry while you get it goin. One drop of rain will kill those little embers.

punk wood is totally under rated.. i like how you have taught us that punk wood on its own can catch a spark, coalesce, into an ember and fanned properly with additions of come more crumbs will flame up. Other instructors have only shown charred punk wood but not dried its raw form. Looks to me with a little skill and practice you are in business, punk wood, birch bark, pine resin and you got flame for sure.. thanks for sharing .. i get a lot out of your videos .. thanks J

Thank you Lonie-san. Now I'm confident to find a punk wood in the wet condition. As you know we usually have a rainy season and its continued rainy day for a couple of weeks in Japan but it could be possible to find some dry punk wood if I look for at the appropriate spot.

@Christopher Kavanaugh It is a strange thing how communicative you are concerning warning others not to communicate concerning God's Word. Jesus said that what is in the heart will come out of the mouth. I have God's Word in my heart and His Word comes out of my mouth and it flows out of my writings. The blessed hope, our coming rapture, is certainly worth writing about, and mocking it I would not do. I really cannot relate to those who sneak about concealing God's Word in the name of being religious. Religion will not save, nor good works. Only a personal relationship with God through our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ saves. The Pharisees were very religious and pious, but most of them knew not The LORD. I hope that you actually know Jesus and are not merely religious. When you know Jesus He is on your heart and you should speak about Him freely. Please do not cloak a lack of speaking forth God's Word as something that should be touted, for it should not. Doing loving works in Jesus Name is important, but to please God you must open up your mouth and confess Jesus. Per Jesus: Luke 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. Per Paul: Romans1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Like God is not in everything. There is not one thing or place that exists outside of His absolute presence. There is no knowledge or truth that is not upheld by His express will. You are religious, but your knowledge of God, His all encompassing Spirit, is very sadly lacking. You think He is neatly stuffed inside of your "religion" box. When you are within your "religious", self made boundaries you let Him out. How big of you!
@kathleennorton6108
@kathleennorton6108 5 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Kavanaugh Mat 6:6 is referring to pray. Do you have a prayer closet? When you pray in a closet to God, in Jesus Holy Name, you are cementing that extremely personal and intimate relationship and fellowship between you and The LORD. It is not to be an act of religion, but an act of love between you and God. It sets the stage for the rest of your day, molded in God's Spirit and love, because you have intimately communed with Him. It is not to be thrown around as an excuse to not go forth with His Word on your lips, as the other verses I already shared with you show forth very clearly we are to do. Religion cannot save you. You must come to the person of Jesus Christ to be saved. And by the way every concept in The Bible is worth repeating. The rapture is very soon to come. The people who will try to survive without the mark of the beast will be glad for every piece of survival information they were privy to. For them it may mean the difference between life and death. For them it won't be "religion", it will be their daily reality.

@Christopher Kavanaugh Real nice. People resort to insults and labeling when they don't have anything else. I don't think I would want to show up at your "feast". I know, you wouldn't want to invite me. You need to step out of religion and into a more living fellowship with Jesus Christ. I shall be at The Lamb's wedding feast. How about you?

Great video -climate is pretty close to were I live in NZ except we dont have the benefit of birch bark or spruce bows . Most of the trees when they die also attract moisture so its almost impossible to start a fire with a ferro rod or even a match and you wouldnt even bother trying a bow drill. When I went to school we actually had the benefit of outdoor education being part of the curriculum -the places you were looking for punk wood is where we were taught to look for as a source of kindling. 45 years since its probably one of the only things I learnt at school that is still useful today. A box of waterproof matches a a piece of tire tube was the prescribed method of fire lighting and had such allocated to use when ever we ventured forth into the wild.

Love, love, love your videos! It's so refreshing to watch a video packed with real-life demonstrations and valuable information without the massive egos to go with it. No showing off the next big toy from the cool bushcrafters club. No commercials disguised as lessons. Just straightforward practical information and a real life demonstration (not staged or edited to look easier than it really is) given by folks who really know what they're doing. Lonnie and Connie, you've got the best bushcraft channel on YT. You'll never know how many lives (or outings) you've saved. I am a fan for life!

Three different individuals have commented in the past that their lives were saved due to what they have learned on the channel here so far. Perhaps there have been more that did not remember where their knowledge had come from or just haven't commented about their survival experience. However if even one life was saved it makes it worth it. Hopefully in the future these videos will continue to benefit our fellow mankind.

I do have a point on my ferro rod but it formed through use rather than intention. I started out striking in the middle of the length of the rod and the rod eventually became so thin in the middle that the tip busted off leaving me with a new pointed end. Now I continue to use the rod by striking on it's new end thus perpetuating the continuation of the pointed end. When I get a new rod, when ever that may be, I will know better and begin by striking on the end right from the start.

I've added it to spruce brush and kindling to start a fire, just never tried it alone. We're spoiled with conifers, pitch and birch bark. I have a couple dozen egg carton bottoms to make into firestarters with dryer lint and wax. Think I'll try a few with roughed up punk wood and a few with thin shavings from my block plane. I suspect the punk wood and wax should burn quite a while. Hurricane Juan went through the area 16 years ago and laid down many trees. Perfect now for punkwood. They are easy to find close to me. Perfect timing. Thanks for showing us. Cheers.
