What a peaceful video. Cooked up some Samphire for tea tonight but alas, was also from Israel! I live on Guernsey in the Channel Islands so I need to go foraging too
@MrAndyballard4 жыл бұрын
Glad you got some peace. Yeas, it's out of season at the mo. I've never tried the Israeli stuff but native's always best in my opinion. By your location I'd say that it probably comes into season a little bit before the mainland. I start looking in early/mid July, good luck.

@andy Ballard it is really fun to pick in the wild but also growing them if I could. , The wild is a 24 hours drive away from here! This plant is not common to grow at all so it's difficult to get seeds. Enjoy them because you can!

Your film is just stunning! I love samphire, it is absolutely a delicious treat. I tried to grow them from seeds a few times, but they did not even sprout! Do you have any experience with growing these? I assume you don't even have to consider that since you can easily harvest these in the wild. Thank you for sharing!!
@MrAndyballard9 жыл бұрын
+Wendi Phan Hi Wendi, there's so much of it over here between July - August, that I wouldn't have to plant it. I'm told that you can buy seeds in the plant nursery though. Why would you want to, when it's so much fun mooching around on the coast for it?

Stunning filming Andy. love sally's shack and I must say your voice was very calming. I could eat a bucket full of samphire! can't get that in wakefield 😔 nice one take care👍

+Mandy Campbell Thanks Mandy, Dave O recorded the voiceover - he's a master of the microphone. Its always a bit odd to hear your own voice though. I thought it sounded like I'd smoked a big joint...! I'm sure you can get samphire ‘oop north’ look in late June. I'm all ‘filmed out’ for the summer now, no more for a while. Aussie beckons though ! watch this space.

Often called Crowsfeet here in the Maritimes. Haven't tried it before, I'm a fiddlehead fan, but I'll be on the lookout for it.

Ah that would figure, I can see the visual similarities. I think it's also known as Sea beans in the USA? It should start showing itself over here soon.

Just look for muddy estuaries (where rivers meet the sea) you've a similar climate to the UK so I don't see why not.

Thanks for your great video. As I know Samphire is also known as Salicornia, right? Could u please share how to cultivate this salicornia, are there any conditions or rules that we need to follow? Or there is anything that needs to notice when growing salicornia. May I know why you only harvest the small scattered salicornia, how about the big cluster around there?
@MrAndyballard8 жыл бұрын
Sorry... I usually get notified of comments, but not this one. Yeah, Salicornia that's the Latin name alright. I'm not sure how you'd go about cultivating it, but I'm sure you could. There's so much of this around in july/Aug that I wouldn't think of growing it. The smaller shoots are def more succulent, the bigger clusters can get tough and woody, esp. at the end of the season.

Where exactly can I find the samphire shown in this video - seems to be in abundance! Would love to take a trip to check it out but would be good to know what to enter in the sat nav...
@MrAndyballard6 жыл бұрын
It's on the Bristol Channel, not far from Clevedon, North Somerset. There's no postal code to enter into a sat nav.. the best way is to walk & see what you find. Best time to look is in early July. It doesn't grow in the winter months.

@MrAndyballard7 жыл бұрын
In your neighbourhood I'm not sure, my back yard is the Bristol Channel where it grows in abundance. You actually need a bit of mud for the roots to establish. Norfolk is Samphire central apparently. Try places/beaches with some mud or an estuary perhaps, maybe google earth estuaries in your area. Yep, stupidly expensive, AND it's imported from Saudi Arabia & Israel for gawds sake, Saudi Arabia ! It won't be out for a few months yet, at least until end of June, beginning of July.
