Wine is much more than a drink. Here in the Algarve, as in all of Portugal, vineyards represent much more than a simple plantation, there is a whole energy and atmosphere surrounding the whole process. From planting to tasting a good wine, every detail makes all the difference, making the wine a real gem.
We went to the ARVAD winery, where we could experience all the magic that surrounds this ancient drink. We took part in a sensational tasting, had the opportunity to take a tour of the property, listen attentively to explanations of how the wines are aged before being bottled and finally a SunSet, which takes place on Thursdays at the Arvad facilities.
Portugal has for years been in the world ranking of countries with the highest per capita consumption of wine, as shown below:
Ranking of countries/per capita consumption
Portugal: 51.9 litres per capita
France: 46.9 litres per capita
Italy: 46 litres per capita
Brazil: 1.92 litres per capita

A little about Arvad.
Arvad, once a word for ‘refuge’, now applies to the care and quality of our wines, made from red grape varieties such as Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional or Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as white grape varieties such as Alvarinho, Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc.
Arvad was created in 2016 on a property on the banks of the River Arade, overlooking Silves.
There are twelve hectares of land, exposed to northerly winds, which allows for large daily temperature variations. A Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic influence, complemented by a clayey limestone soil and the weight of history.
It was in this region that wine was introduced to Portuguese territory. Brought from the East by Phoenician travellers, it took root in the Silves area through the word of exchange and discovery, and was drunk in a ritual as proof of civilisation.
Red grape varieties: Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon.
White grape varieties: Alvarinho, Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc.
