If he decided to start his own business an education would likely give him an advantage. I knew a man would repaired home heating and cooling systems. He was very, very good. Good enough to hire about 12 techs. He hired a women who claimed to know accounting, taxes and payroll. She pretty much controlled the company's finances. Two years into her employment a letter came from the IRS stating back taxes and penalties were due. When he tried to confront this woman she had blown town with about $200k plus the money she has been stealing since day one. He stated he didn't need to know how to look at the books to see if he was making or losing money that's why he hired her so he didn't have to. Has he taken the most basic small business classes at the community college he might have found out about the theft earlier.

@@dps6198 "Has he taken the most basic small business classes at the community college he might have found out about the theft earlier." Or, he could do some simple research and save money in the process. Not saying he shouldn't have been better prepared, but there is a huge misconception that college is the best source of information and learning, when it simply isn't for a lot of cases. Especially considering that, if you go to (public) school, chances are higher you will get roped into some redundant agenda by the teachers, whether you notice or not. Whereas if you have the opportunity to be self-taught, you have even more freedom looking for information and suitable teachers. I have one question here. Did the woman have the documents proving she was qualified for her job?

That statement from Sowell was nonsense! Attacking a US President for speaking on matters with which he may have limited personal experience but definitely has responsibility as POTUS is absurd. This is the reason Presidents have advisors. For Sowell to make such a comment and/or suggest that US Presidents should only make public statements about matters on which they are subject matter experts speaks to Sowell's partiality and his conservative agenda.

@@beingsshepherd Perhaps! I think attacking a politician for being good at "politics" i.e. pandering to a crowd is a bit odd. I also think Sowell didn't seem to fully comprehend the context of what Obama said... Obama was talking about taxes being used to subsidize the oil industry not personal income tax which he was saying should, at the very least, not increase (I'll add, if not be lowered). In essence, wealthy corporations should be taxed and individuals should have some tax stability/relief. Sowell interprets that as "when people keep their own money that's subsidizing them" = Not what Obama said. And, this begs the question(s) Whose money is corporate profit? What is fair for the employees that make a corporation profitable versus executives? The wage gap between corporate executives and the lowest level workers has become exponentially wider and that, plus inflation, is the reason for the disparity in the standard of living. Not tax. Sure! If 50% of the money poor people earn didn't go to Uncle Sam they could by more stuff but there needs to be a substantial wage increase in concert with moderate taxation. Obama's statement would not fix any problems but it sounds good... and Sowell didn't understand what Obama was saying.

Back in the day, 60s and 70s, those who went off to universities were capable of doing the work...the others went to work, ( and yes you could get a job without a degree and do well) or in the military, or started at community colleges to figure out if it was for them....Very logical..but then college started to function more as a business model than an educational institution. Higher education isn't the answer. The answer is fixing lower education. I remember being appalled to learn that back in the 1800s an eighth grade education was as good as, if not better than, a high school education when I graduated. And nothing I've heard has indicated that a high school education has appreciated in value since I graduated. In fact it's depreciated since I graduated.

Thomas Malthus years and years ago noted that when the government interferes in industry, it is almost always to industry's detriment because that interference is not being driven by NEED and thus throwing supply and demand out of whack. For some time now the government has been paying to send as many people into college as possible, and the only people obviously enriched by this are the colleges. At no point has it ever been asked whether all these graduates were needed, whether people were studying studies that were needed, or even whether all the money was well-spent on people who graduated instead of just taking classes for years and wasting those years of their life and copious amounts of money. It was simply taken as a unproven premise that 'college is always good for everyone'. If they simply stepped away, a lot of the problems would fix themselves over time.

After listening to the teachers discuss about Antarctica, and other places around the world, I pointed out to a few that these places aren't just full of scientists .. i.e. kids/adults who studied hard and went to University etc. The Winterers, those of us who keep the place ticking over and so on, through the dark months, are all mostly tradesmen. I also mentioned that on my other travels working overseas, I saw plenty of Brit (and American) tradesman (Carpenters, Plumbers, Electrician, Mechanics), who had worked all over the planet, all left school with no higher education, but got themselves a trade, earn tons of money and travelled the world. My husband also didn’t go to college. He never cared what people thought of him. He’s 36 and making 120k a year now as a journeyman electrician. This wouldn’t be attainable with just any bachelors degree. I think the dumbest thing about college is that no one is educating the students what they’re investing in. My husband and I have no student loans. Students should not spend 60k in a history degree. You’re probably not going to make a good return on what you’re invested in. That’s why we have college students thinking communism is a solution. They can’t even afford to live in an apartment on their own.

Except when you actually want to go to college for something like mathematics or some other academic interest, and it's still prohibitively expensive compared to years past. Sowell completely misses the point, that higher education, regardless of who is going to colleges, is prohibitively expensive for EVERYONE, not just bozos who go to college thinking their sociology degree is going to get them a job at an investment firm or some nonsense. For those genuinely interested in academics, who aren't there to simply get a special piece of paper for companies to look at, it's STILL too expensive. This is regardless of how smart you are as well, since the actual amount of money you can save with scholarships is diminishing, and one shouldn't have to be a literal genius to go to the same college a rich but comparatively average or merely above average person does just because one is poor.

Believe it or not, almost everyone in a skilled trade needs a college level education. Many years ago, when I worked for a manufacturing company, I was on a committee to develop a program for recruiting or training skilled trades workers. One thing we found, early on, the training for skilled trades was on the level of an associates degree in any trade we were interested in. We had a skilled tradesman come in to install and set up for operation an air supply system for some of the machinery. He had a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. Every nurse I have encountered went to college to qualify. I was talking to a fellow student, decades ago, quite a few decades ago, and he mentioned his job. The class we were in had nothing to do with his job, so I asked him why he was taking it, he was already in management. He said he did not have a degree, and he needed one to move any higher. They didn't care what degree, just so you had a degree. There is a whole lot of education that is college level, but not considered college education.

Kind of funny that he is a know it all. He must have been included in everything. How did he find out about Iran's secrets? Why is America going forward with all of these electric cars? Amazon is moving forward with a fleet of electric vehicles. I guess Sowell, the know it all, is against solar power. I find it funny that he did not talk about Reagan's contra debacle that Oliver North fell on the sword for. How about the trickle-down theory, didn't old Sowell know anything about that? Trump paid 750.00 in taxes, but I guess Sowell thinks that's just fine. Why didn't he criticize the affordable care act, his republican handlers vowed to do away with it, but somehow they didn't. I guess he thought that Obama giving the order to take out Bin Laden was something that sooner or later his republican heroes were going to do, even though they had plenty of chances to give that order, I mean how hard was it to find a 6'7" mountain man. Bush and Cheney brought the country to the brink of a depression that would have rivaled the great depression. President Obama came and cleaned up the mess that they left behind, and brought the country back from that disaster. Democrats have always had to clean up republicans' messes. America's Iran deal was signed by all major European countries. If it was so awful, why did they agree with it? I guess Sowell is smarter than everyone else, and the leaders of Europe are just a bunch of dummies that would do whatever old dumb Obama said. Hey, Sowell give us the solution for cold fusion, why waste your brilliance on republican talking points?

I watch and read a lot of Thomas Sowell and agree with him on many points, but his critique of Obama here sounds more like a man with a personal vendetta than a scholar with well-thought-through positions. When Obama is speaking about education, he is simply saying that if you have the ability and desire for higher education, then cost should not prohibit you from being able to attend. Thomas Sowell interprets this as Obama trying to 'run people through institutions that they have very little interest in, etc.' That's a ridiculous interpretation of Obama's comment. The reason colleges have so many deadbeats is because costs are so high that professors have to treat their students as paying clients, rather than students. If college were free to the highest achieving young people, then the professors could kick the bums out, and only the best would remain. That's what would keep higher education from being 'watered down.' On the topic of clean energy, the data were clear and continue to be clear about the potential of these multi-billion dollar industries. The clean energy economy train has left the station. All Obama is saying is, 'This industry is a reality. Why shouldn't the US dominate it?' Sowell's comment about Obama knowing nothing about those industries is simply childish. No president is an expert in everything they have to make decisions on. That's why he has advisors. And time has certainly proven Obama correct. With regard to subsidizing millionaires, as Warren Buffet said, he pays a smaller percentage of his income to taxes than does his secretary. Is that fair policy? Should millionaires be able to write off their private jets? People can disagree, but Sowell's comment that 'Obama has a talent for saying things that make no sense' is again, childish and odd for a man of his intellectual stature. I do agree with Sowell that 'subsidies to the oil industry' are debatable, as well as high taxes in cities leading to their decline. But overall, Sowell's comments come across as a man filtering everything through his "I hate intellectuals lens", and he comes across as petty.

The problem is on a global scale, politicians have latched onto uneducated people and educated them in one fact...... "Vote for me and I will give you other people's money". The facts that the giver and receiver in this case are morally bankrupt and that they will run out of "other people's money" never enters the discussion. In America most college students get funneled in, expecting only a lot of partying and fraternal bonding away from their parents for the first time. It is an entire culture of prolonged adolescence that you can see in Animal House and the subsequent generations. And it applies to both genders. Almost every graduate of private high schools is expected to go to college. Is it the same in UK and AUS? Easy loans and an idea that you can find employment with a degree regardless of your major is a huge part of it.

My ex husbands property taxes just tripled because the city built a giant flea market with a parking garage right across the street from his house. They also made his block of the street a 2 way. It was a 1 way because it was so narrow. His house isnt the a great thing to look at and it went from being valued at $60,000 to almost $200,000 just because of this building. Now he is in jeopardy of losing his house that his parents bought in the 1960s. The house itself was built in 1850. Taxes are ridiculous.

Bunch of Obama haters. Thomas Sowell I believe is pro republican anti democrat and a Trump lover. He hates on Obama as if he was a bad Democrat and he would possibly support a good Democrat when it wouldn't matter who was the democratic president he would hate on , except for Trump, I think most Trump supporters would still love Trump if he ran Democrat policies and those same people would also still hate Obama if he was Republican. The reason why Republicans hate Obama so much is because he was a great Democrat. Why would they hate him so much if he were a bad Democrat? If Obama were such a bad president and failed his democratic duties as president then that should be good news for Republicans as opposed to a good Democratic president that fulfilled his democratic duties. And that is why Republicans hate Obama so much , not because he was a bad Democrat President but because he was a good Democrat president and did his job and did it well. Plus I think Thomas Sowell doesn't like black people. Plus Thomas Sowell is a failure to his country to sit there and portray himself so much better and not step up to do better. I guess he felt shit was good enough without...... and what was Donald Trump, "the greatest president of all time " whom most , or well pretty much all of his supporters consider to be, doing during Obama 2 term presidency..... apparently he had a successful game show he must have felt more important than leading the country at that time and didn't mind Obama "destroying" the country. Yeah Trump just let that happen, for his cable TV game show.

I taught college for almost 40 years. I mentioned to collogues that less than 10% of those in colleges should be there. They agreed with me. The problem is that these students are not ready for the work college actually involves. They could have bad study habits or not the educational background or the mental abilities or the skills, the desire and the motivation for college. The thing is that college is not for everyone. Career colleges, occupational centers or community colleges can provide the education and training for good, well-paying careers that don't require college educations.

But people who aren't college material at some point need to understand that's what they actually need. The right degree and knowledge will get you where you need to be. Make good money and invest wisely for a few years and then you can do whatever you want. Just like when people go into the military they aren't going to like it but they do it for the benefits that come when you get out. Going to college is the same thing. The benefits you get after graduating. Why is that so hard for black folks to understand? They'd rather listen to people like him saying they shouldn't go if they don't want to.
