Find & Remove DUPLICATE Images in Lightroom

In this video, I talk about how Lightroom Classic doesn't have built-in functionality to find and remove duplicate images but there are plugins available. In the video, I mention two plugins and demo one. Also, I probably didn't give the plugin that I did demo a fair shake in that one can experiment and set the search attributes in such a way to more easily find real duplicates than what I indicated in the video. So are the files placed in the smart collection the original plus suspected duplicates of the original? Or are they only what the program identifies as a duplicate?

New LR 11, comes up with a duplicate smart collection without Teekesselchen being loaded. Is this now a part of the new LR?

I use LR and LRC in tandem. I import my photos into LR and then sync with LRC. Some images are duplicated! Why is that?

Hi and glad you and yours are doing well. Re the "Plugins" folder, brand new computer and LR install, no such folder anywhere on the system. May I presume one has to create the folder for an initial install of any plugin?

Anthony, is there away to find original raw files? Example I've exported to jpeg then at a later date can't remember where the original raw file is.

Hi Anthony. I ran the program on Lightroom. There are a ton of duplicates I can see but it doesn't pick up a single one. Is it something I've ticked in one of those boxes - I've left the settings. All my pics are TIF. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Your videos are so clear.

Thank you Anthony for the explaining how to catch duplicated photos in LR. I imported 6693 photos and 622 videos from Mac Photo app to LR Classic. LR shows 23639 photos in the library. I ran the Teekesselchen plug-in per your instruction and did not catch the duplicates, where I can physically see them in the library. Do you have any idea why these duplications happened during the transfer? Appreciate your feed back.

Anthony, I have been following you for months and appreciate your weekly presentations very much. Sorry to hear about your personal problems and hope they are resolved soon. I attempted to add the plugin in the same manner you did but it errored out when I used it. I then noticed that you were on an Apple machine so I determined where on my Microsoft machine the plugins where stored, moved the plugin to the folder (c:/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Lightroom Classic). I enabled the plugin using the Plugin Manger. A executed the plugin and it worked.

This may be a silly question but I've often heard of having duplicate images in my folders. Can you tell me how that would occur? I do have some raw or dng files that have been exported as jpegs that are now in LR (not sure how that happened by the way). Is that what we are talking about or does somehow a dng get duplicated as a dng? I would like to get rid of the jpegs now in LR but is that what we are talking about here?

I use a series of catalogs in LR, 1 corresponding to the photos of the year, another as a general one, where they are built every year, and a third, which corresponds to the best photos that will be used. My question: Is there any way to organize folders differently in their individualized structure, or customized for each catalog? Or am I required to have duplicate photos in custom folders for each catalog?

Interesting video. I'm looking for (easy) ways to find duplicates, I've got a lot... I'm curious about the time differences you mentioned. If I shoot 30 frames per second then all files will have the same time if I look at it in the Windows Explorer, but I can still sort on time and Windows will sort them in the correct order. Which mean that there must be more time info than what's visible. Did you check that the program don't look at the complete timestamp? If that's the case then it might be possible (for the programmer) to improve on the program by checking file properties in stead of just looking at the metadata stored in LR.

You are correct. If you install ExifTool and enable it in either of the duplicate finder plugins, it reads milliseconds from the file (something Lr cannot do on it's own).Thus it would not falsely flag burst shots. I believe Anthony was unaware of this. It would solve one of his issues with the plugin.

Windows may also be putting the files in number order. In other words, it sorts by time first, then by filename.

I often work with Windows clock and file timestamps when programming and the resolution is much better than seconds. That's of course also accessible to Adobe's programmers so if the LR DB only use seconds then that's a (weird) decision as multiple frames per second was common long before Adobe started designing LR.

Does the "file name" rule include the extension? If not, couldn't you include it to solve the 30 fps type problem since they will all have different file names?

Thanks, finding duplicates is a problem. Unfortunately, this plugin would require too much effort for me to get it right. Your video pointed out the risks.

Thanks for telling about these tools, Anthony. I agree that nothing is perfect. I've seen some offline (non-LR plugins) that claim to find duplicates based on pixel analysis, meaning it'll find resized, cropped images, etc. Maybe do a video looking into those?

@@stevejarvis186 Hello and apologies for the late reply. I do believe you have to do both. In other words, Teekesselchen and/or Duplicate Finder 2 need ExifTool installed separately in order for the duplicate finder plugins to take advantage of it. However, ExifTool is NOT a LrC plugin, it's rather installed as any other program on Mac/Win/Linux. I hope this helps.

I think if you shoot 30 frames per second then you will certainly have about 28 duplicates anyway, so i can see this being quite useful for burst shooters. It does seem quite limited though.

I confess that my lightroom catalogue is a mess. And i don't know how i got to this situation. Quite surprising considering all the stuff lightroom can do, it hasn't got a delete duplicates feature. I'd happily pay extra for that function.
