Bats are more closely related to horses than mice. They are part of an order called Pegasoferae that includes horses, cats and dogs, cows, whales and hedgehogs

Also, you failed to mention that they should be mounted between 10-30 feet up. Bats can't just fly way like birds, so they fall in order to gain speed then they fly away.

I have a place at 9800' in the Colorado Rockies. We have several families of bats that roost under the clapboard siding, only about 7 feet up. Been their since we bought the place 24 years ago, and they show no sign of slowing down.

Bat's are perfectly able to start flying from about 4 feet up. I have them all over the walls in my shed that is 6 1/2 feet tall. When I look in there I even see some at belly button level. They drop a little bit but nothing dramatic like you're claiming.

Great video. We have a bat house with 5 chambers which is rated to house 500 bats. We have had 50 bats in the past. One other important note to touch on would be the height to install the bat 🦇 house. They need to be installed 12 to 15 feet off of the ground or higher so when the bats drop out of the house they can properly fly out. If not it won't work. Great video. Thanks. God bless. 😎 👍 🙏

Thank you SO much for this upload. There is a river at the back of all the houses that are on the main street, so hopefully the water part is sorted and for the cat and dog part we have 2 cats but! in our back garden its very quiet so the little guy and gals will have peace. I'm terrified of bats but! i want them to have a home. There is an old house and a couple of sheds that are being pulled down 2 doors down from where i live and the bats that once called those buildings a home now won't have one. The sun comes round to the back in the evening sometimes.

I don't really have a mounting option except for on a tree. I know that's not ideal, but if I trim the branches around it in all directions, and have as few branches everywhere as possible, do people think the bats might still reside in it?? (It's an old cedar tree, and I can trim quite a bit around it to make it quite barren around the bat house itself.)

I've found bats in hollow trees before. If it's all you have, go for it. They're more prone to predators so if you do, put one up that has a longer cavity for them to get deep enough for bats to be out of arms reach of raccoons. Snakes are most likely your main predator in trees but chances are far slimmer than a raccoon

Thanks for this informative video. There are quite a lot of bats that come out during early evening around our home. We've seen them coming out of our neighbor's chimney. Besides that, our neighbors put a swimming pool in and have let it go terribly. Their pool is more of a frog pond/swamp and now we have tons of mosquitoes and 🐸 frogs! No joke! It's absolutely terrible when darkness gets near; it's mosquito haven! I seriously think I'll be getting probably more than one of these bat houses. Thanks again for the video; it's very much appreciated! 👍

I'm pretty sure bats are NOT related to mice or rodents at all. They are Chiroptera mammals, which are more closely related to carnivores like cats, dogs, bears, and hoofed animals like horses, pigs, and strangly even whales. Some bat species may have a similar resemblance to mice, which is where the myth comes from.

I received a bat condo that supposedly will hold 300 bats? I received it as a gift 20 years ago. It was made by Baldwin Furniture. They made great outdoor furniture. It is made with cedar. I live in Connecticut & inquired with the state dept. of DEEP. They suggested it be painted flat black except the surface they need to land on & crawl inside. They suggested mounting it 15’ to 21’ feet up. Facing south with a water feature nearby. It came with no hardware to mount it? I had to mount my own hardware. I’m a lineman for the local power company. I acquired an old push brace (wood pole). I hand dug a pole hole in my swamp. I got down about 3’ & used an old steel barrel that I cut the bottom out of. I pushed that down in the muck & continued digging down & pushing the barrel down until I was down about 4 feet. I rigged a wood block in a tree & a rope to the tip of the pole & slid the wood pole toward the hole & used a flat board to catch it as it slid into the hole. I was able to pull the pole vertical with help from a retired lineman. I back filled the hole with crushed stone. Once it was set & plumb. I tamped it tight with larger stones. I drilled holes from the bottom 18” up on opposing sides for old steel pole steps from old poles. I ran them up the pole to the top or 17 feet up. I predrilled holes for my old pole hardware to mount the bat condo to. I rigged a block to the top of the pole & raised it up to the top. I climbed the pole using the steps & used my floating lineman’s belt & strap to work with both hands. I landed it successfully. Later I attached 36” wide steel flashing to keep animals from climbing up & bothering them. I cut down all the neighboring trees that shaded it. All I seem to attract are wasps? No bats yet despite a running stream nearby? I asked my farmer neighbor. He informed me of white nose syndrome that was killing off mature bats at the time. He said diseases like that run in cycles. I would have to be patient? 15 years later & still no bats? What gives?

I live in Texas where it's very hot. I don't have a source of water though, and there's a lot of traffic. Ok, this wouldn't work for me. Thx anyway.

Gregory Hall: I was thinking the same thing. But what about of you attached the bat house to a big square wood container? The rain overflowing it would keep the water relatively clean, and possible even attract mosquitos.

Austin has a bridge that homes millions of bats. I don’t think traffic is a problem.

Bats live in caves. Caves are cold. Not so sure about direct sunlight all day on a bat house.... The bat I found during the day was sleeping on the North side of the house between downspout and siding.

0:35 really? Seriously, how do you know this? Who's counting?Did you put a little camera on a bat's head to count the bugs going in their mouth?

It's a known fact. Google it. A single bat can eat up to 6,000 - 8,000 mosquito sized bugs a night.

Exactly. The only thing bats have in common with rodents is that they are small and they are mammals.

If you live in the US you're not gonna get rabies because all bats in the US either eat fruit, nectar, pollen, insects, or fish and they will not bite you unless in self defense if you're grabbing for them. Vampire bats are exclusive to Latin America.
