How to Install a Bat House on Post

The ColonyLodge bat house contains four wooden roost chambers protected by a thick plastic exterior for low maintenance and superior long life. The post in this video is two- 2''x6''x16' PT sandwiched together to make a single 4''x6''x16' post that better resists warping. The post is actually made with a hinge bolt that allows it to pivot to the ground; this is discussed in another video. BCM has been studying bat houses since the 1990's, ships bat houses nationwide, and is available for installations.

For what it's worth, wood into concrete will rot the wood all the same. Concrete is very porous.

Good idea 👍🏽 I’ll be putting about 4 on my property, I have 4.2 acres, do you know if that’s ok? Or too many? I’ve wondered if food source would be a problem? I heard they eat thousands of insects. I would space them fairly away from each other. I’m trying to control insect populations to improve my vegetation. I already have 3 nice birdhouses my father-in-law made. I also got an idea on the post from a diy video I found when searching how to make a flagpole. It might give other viewers an idea.

interesting project. what concerns me is maybe cats or other predators climbing up the pole. what experience do you guys have with cats climbing up the pole?

Haven't heard of a cat, but as long as there not other perch nearby then wrapping the post with some metal flashing will do the trick.

Putting varish on the extra roost area is not recommended, most info sites.

There is no data that bats don't like a particular stain or paint. Data actually shows unfinished bat houses are less successful than finished ones, and obviously finished ones are going to last much, much longer baking in the sun.

A 4x6x16 will cost about $60; you can also fasten two 2x6x16' together with deck screws (the 2x6 are more readily available)

Bats co-exist with paper wasps, if the nests take up too much room they can be scraped out when bats aren't present.
