I've been saying the same thing for about the same 40 years. Anytime I decide to use a deeper cup for a particularly low or "symphonic-y" part, I call it my "cheater mouthpiece", LOL

I played, professionally, on a Bobby Shew lead before I joined a military band way back in the 80’s. My “professor” demanded I not only change mouthpiece to a Bach 1 but change my whole set up. Needless to say I didn’t but he made my life hell for a year. When I got to my band I wailed double C’s for the next 22 years. I’ve now played on that mouthpiece for 37 years (yeah with a gold plated rim and custom 10 degree bend), tried many others (as we all have) but stuck with it. Any mouthpiece is nothing without the person behind it. Stick with the right tool for the job!

I played for years on a Bach 1 1/4C drilled out to a #18 throat. It was HUGE. Then, went through various 3 rim Giardinellis and 15 rim Schilke’s. When I lost my Giardinelli 3S that was drilled to a #22 throat, and quit using Schilke’s because I didn’t like their rims, I found my way back to a Bach mouthpiece. First it was a Bach 1D drilled to a #22 throat, but it wasn’t quite right. So, I tried a Bach 1E and left it stock, and it’s the best mouthpiece (for ME) that I’ve ever played. The range up to Double High C is solid and clear. I can do things on that mouthpiece that were much more difficult on the others, and not as good. I could have saved about 35 years by just going from that old Bach 1 1/4C (which I still have) straight to the Bach 1E! If I want to make it a little easier to get down to the low F#, I can pull out my Bach 1D. 🤣

Mouthpieces are like shoes. You don't go for a hike in the mountains on spikes, you use them for the 100m sprint. You don't play soccer wearing basketball shoes. If you play music, just like in sports, you shoe-up accordingly

Ignorant band directors have done more damage to trumpet players with this 'cheater' mouthpiece BS. I suppose a Formula 1 car is a cheater car, because you should be able to drive Grande Prix of Monte Carlos in a reliable Ford Taurus. Or perhaps we should get rid of dump trucks because you haul dirt in the trunk of your Toyota Camry? SMH

Wait a minute. Here's the deal: To play a commercial mouthpiece, which generally has a smaller inside diameter, a shallower cup, and backbore/venturi combinations that are more conducive to compression, that takes a certain kind of development all its own. If you took one of these classical shithead snobs with their Bach 1s and said, OK, go and play lead on a gig with the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band - here I'll give you the hottest cheater mouthpiece on the market, you go ahead, cheat all you want, and lets see you do it. They'll fall flat on their faces in no time flat - GUARANTEED! That's aside from the fact that these classical snobs can't play commercial music because they can't swing, they play like a bunch of stiffs. SQUARESVILLE, MAN! But if one of these Bach 1 players ever had to switch to a "cheater" mouthpiece, it would take them YEARS to acclimate to it and adapt their embouchure technique to be able to play it, and most of them would never be able to make that transition at all. They just like to call them cheater mouthpieces to hide their own insecurities about the fact that they're not talented enough to play commercial music. That's right, they're not talented enough. To play commercial music requires soul, style, feeling, interpretation. To play classical music, you don't need any of that, not nearly to as large a degree. Classical music is all played the same way, very straight, very square, like a robot. That's all these guys can do. I've heard classical players say, "oh yeah, I can play jazz, I can play commercial." Then you hear them try to do it, and you say to yourself "uh, no you can't, buddy." Just as an example, listen to the TERRIBLE job that the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra backing up Doc Severinsen on "In The Mood" in the video linked below. THEY SUCK. THEY FLAT OUT SUCK! They can't swing, the trumpet players were cracking and missing notes. For instance, at 1:22, the trumpets didn't swing the eighth notes on that iconic break there, they played them straight and then they MISSED the measly Bb at the top of that lick! A Bb! I had better range than that when I was a 6th grader! And then they missed the E and Eb at 2:20. These classical players are weak, playing their friggin' 1C mouthpieces. They're terrible. They can't swing to save their lives. They did such a poor job of it, it made it difficult for Doc to play on top of such bad accompaniment. The whole thing almost fell apart at the drum solo because the stooge on drums lost the pulse during the solo. He's so used to playing square-O snare-O he can't play a drum set to save his life. And these jerks call themselves professionals? And then they have the nerve to condescend on commercial players for mastering a mouthpiece that is most appropriate for their jobs? Classical players are jerks. They've been perpetuating the same WRONG principles and theories about the over-importance of air for centuries and been ruining a lot of trumpet players by having them develop bad habits on these toilet bowl mouthpieces. A 3C is too big for everyone, but it's popular because it lets people get away with bad embouchure mechanics and bad habits. Then, when the player grows up and wants to switch to a better mouthpiece that is more appropriate for their playing, they can't do it because they've become accustomed so something that is so big and has caused them to become more entrenched in their bad habits. Players should learn on SMALLER mouthpieces, like a 10 1/2C to begin with because to play something smaller, you have to be doing things correctly and efficiently with the embouchure. If a guy has big teeth or big lips and wants to switch to something bigger later on, fine, it will be an easy transition. But they should learn on the smaller mp in the beginning to develop the correct chop habits. Every time someone utters that "cheater mouthpiece" shit with me, it really strikes a nerve - I get pissed. Because I went through the exact same bullshit with one of my first teachers being a classical player who pulled that cheater shit with me, too. Here's the link to the train wreck that the Cincinnati Pops made out of "In The Mood." kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWWaZWqgba-GrZI
