I am Italian and live in the Netherlands, and although I push myself to keep practicing it's very difficult sometimes to keep the motivation. There are 2 main reasons: 1. It's very hard to remember words because they often begin/end with the same syllables or particles(e.g. compound words) so I mix them up, or the words are so different from the ones I have in my mother tongue or English that they just don't stick. 2. Although I do talk via text with some Dutch friends, it's very hard to practice conversation in person. I do have a good basic Dutch understanding and I can have basic conversations without problems, but my level is still not good enough for a "normal" conversation over a coffee, where people talk about a lot of different topics(i.e. vocabulary needs to be at a very good level) and they speak too quickly for me (although not any quicker than I would in my mother tongue). Even though Dutch people are very happy to know that I am learning the language, when interacting one on one or in a group people find it a little annoying to have to explain what they say or repeat multiple times. So they either switch to English or do not explain. I feel very insecure of my conversational Dutch because I am aware that due to my limited vocabulary and grammar mistakes I sound a little bit dumb. Friends correct me and although this is cultural and they mean very well, I feel like I make way too many mistakes to speak. So I'd rather sound clever in English than dumb in Dutch. What I am now trying to do to keep improving is self study (online and book exercises on TaalCompleet, KNM study materials), reading kid's books (e.g. Jip & Janneke, there are audiobooks on spotify as well) and watching kid's television (Alfred J. Kwack, Buurman & Buurman, Knofje on youtube; Jeugdjournaal.nl and NPO Zapp programs) and texting with friends in Dutch. My time to study and practice is limited and the progress I make is slow, but I hope that over time I'll be able to improve enough to have normal conversations with the locals.

Kijk, Ik ben geboren in Belgie. "Wet ge of we vanouvond no ne film gan kieken?"

I agree with the listening tip so much. I’ve used Clozemaster for years and like to use the listening practice mode. It truly helps with listening comprehension and has gotten me to the point where I can easily listen to stuff in the background. I think the most progress I made in any language came from listening because you hear the same sentence patterns over and over again, and I think that can be way more helpful than learning vocabulary on its own. Not only does it help you speak more naturally later, but it gives you anchor points, so to speak, in fast, natural speech. But if nothing else, listening is so good for maintenance. The main thing is that it’s a long time investment, but steady practice (daily for _any_ amount of time, like you said-without a particular goal in mind each day, I’d add) _will_ pay off. The motivation comes from gradually, gradually, gradually realizing you understand more and more.

Excellent video.. great advice at the end. My daughter is a French speaker and French has ridiculous verbs. She just throws them out there and keeps going when corrected. I speak Italian to her and she does the same. I make tons of mistakes in dutch when I text with my aunt in Holland but who cares! More exposure is like listening to music. You learn verbs and expressions without studying them. Think of north America. Here we have people from all over. Many people speak with an accent or broken English and they are understood just fine. There is no need for perfection, just keep it up and let whatever is going to sink in, sink in.

I can totally relate to the fact that Nederlanders zo goed Engels spreken kunnen. In the end I sometimes feel that my effort is not worthwhile, as we already have a common language we handle good enough. I remain positive in the belief that one day I'd be surprised of my achieved level, though. Languages have that weird learning curve, some days you feel you forget more than you learn. But some day, out of the blue, you are able to understand or reply better than you ever imagined. And that's priceless :)

When my father went to the University of Leiden, there was a poster in one of the research labs there saying 'if a pretty poster and a nice saying are all it takes to motivate you, you have a very easy job the kind robots will be taking over soon, you're welcome' that's one way to motivate people. The people you speak to can be brilliant at keeping you motivated and feel good about practising, or can crush you by making you feel stupid

I've had conversations with people where I speak Dutch, and they speak English, and vice versa. It's strange but sometimes it's even reassuring. I had one person at AH ask me a follow-up question in English, but when I answered in Dutch, they "corrected" themselves and re-spoke in English.

I am the one of the people who really want to learn dutch... Because of my location of living, and that is in the North Macedonia, I just can't find any dutch teacher. I started to learn with some macedonia teacher online but she is just bad and and bad... And if you find some teacher online, it's a very expensive. I believe that you can easily learn new language if you live in that country... So that is my demotivating situation to learn dutch even though I think that this language is not that though to learn... But I don't have environment for that... Thank you for your help Kim🙂

Please Kim! Pretty please with sugar on can you teach us a musical themed lesson one day?! 😃🎼 I recommend in two parts because it’ll take too long for all of it but it’s up to you decide. How about three or even four? Part 1 could be all about the many different types of musical instruments, how to say “the musicians” and bands they belong to. Wait! If you say; “the brass band” is it still gon a be “de brass band” and do you only ever say; “het messing” if you refer to “brass the metal”? 🤔 Maybes part 2, most instruments individual parts. (Surely you Dutch call “the trombone’s slide” and “the euphonium’s piston valves something else right?” For woodwinds we say: “the boehm system” do you say; “het boomsyteem”?? Part 3 different genres and styles of music and maybe the decades and centuries when they came. And part 4. Music theory. Believe me I googled it and instead of saying “C major” or “A minor” you call them quite a different way. What do you call sharps and flats? I can wait! ;) And I’d really appreciate it all if you can one day! 😃

At least i'm happy i can understand dutch, maybe cause you speak in a way we can understand, not so slow but ont so fast. I have lost motivation actually yesterday, when i was reading in a blog, that some or most dutchies don't like to talkin dutch with foreigners and answer always in dutch..so i have been learning for years...for nothing :( ? is there any places in the netherlands, bars, clubes or groups to practice with? so one can get motivated without fear of being judged. I also feel like i learn too many things, but don't get them organized in my mind so it gets overwhelming.. like what i the correct order to learn a language ( I'm learning some others like german and norwegian, so all are similar..then i get confused sometimes..maybe my fault...but i am travelling soon, so i want to at least get to understand.. and maybe speak when possible, even if i do it wrong... at least try.... at least i am going to be prepared for people to answer in english... and will not think tht's personal.... but One thing that keeps me motivatd, besides travelling to the netherlands and belgium.... is your channel!! and i have forgotten about it, because i have been quite busy...but i hope to keep watching your videos in this month and next so i will go more prepared. Thanks, you are the best dutch teacher! and unique, thanks for giving us hope!! . I hope when i see i get to see you over there , would be nice

I'm learning Dutch because I want to, not because I need to, so most of the time the motivation is alright (even though "not needing to learn Dutch" can also be a problem since there are no repercussions if I don't study). But my main problems are: 1. No one to practice with, especially speaking. 2. Low energy & problems with concentration due to cPTSD 3. I have trouble remembering new words and using them. I do understand quite a lot, but my active vocabulary is awful. 4. I feel insecure and like I'll never be able to hold a conversation. 5. I'm afraid of speaking Dutch in front of another person and embarrassing myself. Those really go for any foreign language, not just for Dutch in particular. My solutions so far: 1. I try to find audiobooks in Dutch, that interest me or music I like (for example De Heideroosjes, Stavast) in order to surround myself more with the language (and hopefully pick some stuff up along the way). 2. I try to engage in learning Dutch at least a few minutes every day because 5 minutes is better than zero minutes, right? That can be anything from watching one of your videos on a certain grammar topic or listening to Dutch music / audiobook / podcast or doing an exercise or a lesson from your course, etc. What it is really depends on my mood and energy level. 3. Sometimes I try and tell my dog something in Dutch, for example that I am now in the kitchen cooking pasta or I've tried introducing myself in Dutch to him. That way I can speak out loud without worrying about someone laughing at my pronunciation and other mistakes. 4. I do (at least) one Duolingo lesson a day. Duolingo isn't perfect to learn a language but it helps with practicing and repeating vocabulary. Edit: I also turned my phone's language from English to Dutch 😅

Ken

Hoi Kim! Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any recommendations for films/series with a Dutch Dub? I love learning with shows, but I usually only find Dutch dubs if it's a kids show. I've watched a lot of cartoons, but I would love to engage with some other stuff too! Thank you for this helpful video!

I own a lot of DVD's (old fashioned I know), they usually have Dutch subtitles "voor doven en slechthorenden" (for people who are deaf or their hearing is bad). Maybe an idea?

Mocro Maffia. The Columnist. The Neighboorhood (nieuwe buurt), Eres, Just Friends. Those are all things that I've watched and I'm in the US. All but the first have subtitles. I subbed to videoland to watch Mocro Maffia with a vpn but after the first 2 seasons with subtitles, I didn't need them for the last 2. Also, I turned on the subtitles in Dutch and was able to understand(because some Arabic is mixed in)

Undercover - it's a Dutch/Belgian series on Netflix that is completely in Dutch. The plot is very good and if you are careful enough you can also pick up the different accents(south and north Netherlands, flemish). It can get a bit hard to understand at times though.

Well, my main concern is pronunciation, I have a problem on my tongue, so "G" pronunciation is a big deal to me , I have the same problem with the "R" in Spanish and French languages. I guess I need a phonodialogist* training(speech therapist)🤔

Kim first of all je bent een topper ❤️ I'm sorry to disappoint everyone but I think the main reason is not really wanting to learn in the first place , the excuses people gave are just obstacles like everything in life, and we just gotta find a way into getting over them like you said changing the surroundings and make it as Dutch as possible. I'm in the Netherlands for one and a half year and every Dutchie is impressed with my "ability" to learn the language but the only thing that makes me learn it is really wanting to! In the libraries you can find dutch people and maybe befriend someone who can teach you some really Dutch things like Kim does in the videos!! And by the way if you didn't start this project , I would obviously be way behind! Willpower is the greatest power ❤️ Groetjes 😘🇵🇹
