This is SUCH A GOOD TOPIC. As a new learner, empty fillers like this just serve to confuse. I looking for meaning in the whole construction I hear, and if a native speaker says it, I get to feeling I must figure out how to adopt it. It must be right if a Dutchie uses it, toch? It's good to be able to spot them, and I can keep them distinct from the real substance of what they are saying.

Do native speakers understand when people speak that fast and one cannot hear most of the words tho? For example, in those examples about gewoon, I could not hear the word gewoon being pronounced at all - it definitely did not sound like gewoon, like when someone clearly pronounces it! To be honest, I don’t think I could ever understand when people speak fast, like, in any language, not just Dutch, so I cannot understand how can others understand when someone speaks fast and doesn’t pronounce the words clearly... However, I can understand most of the words and most sentences when I read the subs, and I know over 6.000 base words in Dutch, and I want to learn all the Dutch words and idioms etc - I can also understand most of the words and sentences when people teaching Dutch are speaking in videos, and I could understand a few words from a short movie in Dutch without the sub, even though in movies and short movies the audio mixing / sound isn’t clear!

Ik ben het helemaal met jou eens! Als een Belg/Nederlander iets in het Nederlands zegt, denk ik onmiddellijk dat het correct is... Zo naïef)))

I’m just learning Dutch, but as a native English and Spanish speaker, with years studying Japanese, I find that using “verbal pauses” in the target language makes one sound SO much more fluent and natural. I had a good friend in Honduras, a native English speaker from NYC; her VERY American accent did not diminish her impressive command of the Spanish language-perfect grammar and a vast vocabulary. As a physician, she had a mastery of medical and scientific jargon in Spanish, as well. She would, however, punctuate her speech in Spanish with a literal, “you know…” in English. For example, “Estoy muy fatigada esta noche, you know, porque asistí a casi treinta clientes, you know.” It always made me chuckle. I pointed it out to her once, and she had NO IDEA she did that! She didn’t believe me-until three seconds later-we were in a taxi and she was talking to the driver in Spanish, then… “you know”. LOL He DIDN’T know. She was amazed, once she knew, at how often she did that. Once she switched to “fíjate or eeh, or o sea”, her Spanish sounded much more natural. Even if I don’t speak a language that well, I really like to use the correct vocal pauses, though they may be frowned upon for proper speech, everyone uses them, and using the wrong ones sounds glaringly weird in any tongue. Thank you SO MUCH for making this video. Now, I can sound authentically casual as I meander my way through trying to speak Dutch!

Dikke merci Kim!

I did not find that the dutch were any certain way in particular about anything I found everyone different. I didn't find that stopwoordjes or lack thereof had any real impact on conversation at all and when people say "the dutch are this way, about that" they are talking experiences based on encounters with certain individuals. I just got back from Netherlands a week ago and found that people were a lot more tolerant about petty nuances in my lingo like improper conjugation or mispronunciation , wrong lexical stress, etc I could still have actual conversations with them without being (badly) misunderstood. In some cases I felt confident, like when I called a taxi from Purmerend to Amsterdam ( DON'T, by the way! : it's e50 a ride - get the sprinter instead!! ) not one word of English was spoken and othertimes I'd order from shops/koffieshops and midway through coversation would say things like : " Waiit a minute, you're not a local!! ... Are you??! You're from Canada how do you speak so well?" And "I did not know he was a foreigner until he spoke english with nova scotia accent" It all depends on who you encounter I guess
