I found a tip to reach a personal style: explore everything you love whether it’s type of music, art or your philosophy about life. I found out that it’s usually pretty consistent. And you will start to sense some patterns about your experience with the style you try to develop. Sometimes we just don’t see it ourselves that we have a style. As for me, even looking at my brother’s clothes, I can tell there is some kind of style. So maybe we can ask our friends to describe the style they think we have and match it with our vision.

That corn jacket just blew my tiny fashion-ignorant mind! I've always had a desire for a somewhat similar jacket with the basic essentials for survival after I had to leave my house during an emergency a few years ago, something you can grab in a hurry. I never knew fashion had ideas like this in it, it's pure art! So beautiful. I'm someone who used to be snobbishly anti-fashion, so it's been eye opening listening to your videos! Love them.

Omg this is exactly how I did it ! I don’t know why some people think that you need to have a lot of money to dress well or have a “personal style “ . It’s about finding what you like and how to style it and having the confidence to wear it . Do not follow a trend because they come and go , and wearing what everyone else is wearing just to look cool won’t make you stand out or unique. I started to look at my favorite designers fashion shows and screenshot the pieces I imagined myself wearing everyday . And as you said , I stopped searching for a “personal style “ and just looked for pieces that I would LOVE to wear . I realized that I like edgy pieces , unique cuts and details . It was a mix of Alaïa ,Thierry Mugler , Alexander Wang ,John Galliano (90s and early 2000s designs ) , Todd oldham , 90s Calvin Klein, 90s Vivienne Westwood and al little bit of jacquemus !! and started to look for similar pieces online and in small boutiques, thrift shops and I even designed things for myself that has the “vibe” I want .

ok the way you related the way people look at clothes to the way you buying a car was something related to something ive been telling my friends. Some people just look at clothes as something they just need to get over with as soon as possible but they would still like to look good. IMO theres nothing wrong with people just looking at whats popular and buying that, there are certain items and aesthetics that are popular and for the most part look good to the average person and thus they choose to just buy that and get it over with. There are things in life we just care more about, you care about fashion and not much about cars so you are picky about what you buy clothing wise but when it comes to getting a car you just find what works and go with that. Also people that want to find their personal style really do just have to start buying things that they like and can afford and it slowly will just become a reality. Forcing it just shows that you understand what pieces make up a certain aesthetic but when you just get things you gravitate to, thats when it really becomes something of your own and not just something you researched for hours.

I never know I had a personal style until I'm familiar with Pinterest. I haven't started buying clothes yet because I don't have any money yet but I already made a Pinterest board of clothes I would love to wear if I had the money and body for it. Apparently I like 3 fashion style. The 1st one is extremely feminine dresses and shirts with sheer and flowy fabrics. The 2nd one is hiphop looking clothes, jackets that looks like someone just paint random stuff on it, lots of splash of colors on all black fabric. The 3rd one is punk/egirl/goth clothes with lots of straps and leathers, cute skirts paired with leather and all black and boots and chains. It's like I can't decide between wanting to look like a fairy princess or a cute goth vampire.

At any given time the most popular looks, clothes or aesthetic are the most garbage. The masses have terrible taste. Sometimes the planets will align and what is selling well looks good. The bigger the trend the more someone should be sure to steer clear. Learning to dress well in terms of what flatters or diminishes your appearance is a skill all adults should have and put effort into. All of society must get dressed in the morning. Appearance among other functions is a form of etiquette. A certain standard of dress is part of the social contract. No one, almost, is omitted.

I think that going out to get a certain style will leave you with clothes that are too one dimensional and fit the people you idolize or who "invented" that style better than yourself. Buying pieces that I´m truly exited about and not just hyped because many people like it or it´s limited, got me to a point where i like and wear every piece of my wardrobe and can interchange streetwear, formal stuff or actual grails with each other to get something that reflects my personality and mood on any given day :3

I know this video is old, but I’d like to point out that the idea of the corn seeds in the jacket could also have another purpose. When you die in the jacket, you might manage to nourish some corn with your corpse when the jacket breaks down from the elements. Sort of a hopeful defeatism, which I enjoy quite a bit.

Yes!!! you hit the nail on the head of how I have learned to dress in a way that doesn't keep pushing the question "what is my perfect personal style??" There are amazing designers that I just draw inspiration from, then see what items in my closet and second hand fit that easthetic and overall feeling. This finally meshes into my own style.

Second hand in GENERAL changed the way i dress. Previously i couldn't afford to buy even a shitty poliester jacket that was sold in a store, and everyone who's an XL trying to buy a woman's jacket knows how much pain it is. I found a beauuuuuuuutiful man's jacket second hand, which was made in the 80s with such impecable wool quality and tailoring and it became my favourite piece. In general, if you're an XL gal like me the best advice i'd give to you is to invest in amazing looking second hand pieces that are oversized. Jackets, coats, trenches, these will absolutely be a statement piece. T-shirts in my personal opinion, are never worth hundreds of dollars.

Bliss I am new here and love your content!!! I appreciated that you mentioned to not worry about building and "aesthetic". I definitely think aesthetic can sometimes be synonymous with trend cycles in the era of TikTok and Pinterest. There's so much pressure to have an aesthetic. I hadn't really thought about that until now, but it's a freeing concept to not put yourself into a box and stay that way forever, especially when following trend cycles. Anyway thanks!!

Great stuff! Also, folowing this approach your personal style is going to change by easily adapting to the changes in your life. To me it serves also the purpose of better understanding myself. And I dont have much time for shopping, buy things either when particular item is needed or when i recognize that a garment just belongs to me. And then after some time i understand changes in myself by seeing noticing how my wardrobe evolves. Strict rule of quality materials and you won’t need to throw anything away, instead the wordrobe builds up to a beautiful story.

Save your money and wait for the annual summer and winter sales at Matches, Machine A, Ssense, and others. Don't buy things like $100 colored tee-shirts. Use "neutral" basics like plain simply designed trousers, white, black tops, from major retailers, for cheap, as a background for one or two or three special but expensive pieces you manage to grab at the sales I mentioned. Do this for the next 10 years. Then, look at your closet and be amazed at what you've built, that, with a bit of care and thoughtful wearing, you can enjoy for decades. Because truly well made avant garde clothes? Never go out of style IF that is your style in the first place.

To me, your style is cool fashion art which affords a lot of versatility. Half the resellers online shop thrift shop racks then resell the goods. Check the various thrifts directly, stores, jobbers, wholesalers, and design houses dump new, last season items at the thrifts because they are usually non-profit and offer a tax write off. I’ve gotten some great designer finds this way.

Dude you blew my mind with that Final Home jacket story and the story about the brand. My first instinct is to obviously obsess over that particular piece and ignore the actual moral of the story LOL but I do get the story. I've been getting into watches lately and I found a similar vibe to what you mention on John Mayer's videos about watches. He's obviously on another level and I couldn't relate that hard to a millionaire but the way he knows the stories behind his watches, what they represent for him and what the different brands represent are pretty powerful and made an impact on me. But I hadn't made the connection of actually following that process myself to the extent that you explain on the video (maybe because in the watch world the chance of getting a Rolex for Casio prices in the way you mention getting an Issey Miyake piece at Zara prices is practically zero) but I noticed I've been vibing with some pieces and building a collection of watches I like, with some pieces having that "showing my love for the brand". I have a couple Vostok mechanical watches from the Soviet era , partly because I love the aesthetic of the Cyrillic alphabet, gotta keep it real, but also because I love the story behind the Amphibia watches and they have that "Sovietness" in them, the glass is curved instead of flat because it was a simple way of engineering a watch that could endure the pressures a diver watch has to endure. It has that connection to those big watchmakers, of innovation and trying to make these little machines that can be precise under difficult conditions, and also that humble element of having to do it in the simplest way, Soviet style. (I only have one Amphibia though, my other Vostok was just because I liked how it looked haha). I also have a Casioak, a modded Casio GA2100 with a metal case à la AP Royal Oak. The GA2100 is already a cool GShock, i love its date display, I like what Casio projects as a brand, this kind of practical but also geeky 1990s/2000s vibe, reliable quartz movements with long lasting batteries, and I like the conversion mod to make it look like a Royal Oak, with that iconic Gérald Genta design. Maybe this would be more of an equivalent of buying a Zara sneaker that's inspired by an Abloh piece but I think that Casio unlike Zara does have more personality on its own. They've released their own metal rendition of the GA , the GM 2100, that's less of a copy of the Royal Oaks like the conversion kits but it holds up on its own, the design really makes sense for a G-Shock. I'm going to try to start a bit of dive-in into fashion following that process and try to find something that resonates. Yohji Yamamoto is someone i've always had in the back of my mind as someone who makes interesting clothing but i've never dived deep into his philosophy or anything like that like you talked about Final Home for example

I got an Issey Miyake cardigan recently on Depop for 30 bucks I still can’t believe it I also got a ne net shirt with Ducks on it and cute irregular pockets for 20 bucks! Sometimes I think to myself “this person has no idea what they have and I’m certainly going to keep my mouth shut”.

Besides access to the financial means and access to the knowledge of brands that are of interest to you, another hurdle can be loving flamboyant or crazy designs but not feeling secure enough to wear the items. I often feel like you have to look like a model to “pull off” some of the designs I enjoy the most. I’ve always just bought what I enjoy, and let that weird amalgam be my “personal style” but when it comes to investment pieces I get really insecure wearing them.

That’s a completely legitimate feeling. I will say, when I worked as a stylist for a couple years, often times these insecurities were keeping people from wearing truly cool things that looked great on them. There were a few times where clients would say “I feel like I’m not able to pull this off“ and I agreed. But honestly, if it fit on their body, I often felt like clients were overthinking it a bit. You can DO IT, Molly! Wear the cool stuff 😊

I know this video is a year old but after watching this I've come to a decision to push back my Margiela replica GATs purchase thats a shoe I really want but unfortunately cannot afford it yet due to its high price, additional taxes and customs for importinh (im from South Africa btw we rely on importing for designer pieces😅). but on the point of buying whats similar to what u want that really stuck with me and I've been searching for a great alternative to the Margiela replica gats online and I found one which is the Puma og army trainers which is pretty much the same design as the Margiela ones and im going to opt for that now since its what is within my budget. Thank you for the advice Bliss 🙂

This Video is amazing. This topic feels personal to me because I always thought the Style i liked is not obtainable for me and so the things i wear do not represent my style. Also i thought whenever I buy something it has to be an investment that fits in to a bigger picture, the "personal style". I will definitely try to trust my guts more now and just buy whatever I enjoy.

I have been wanting to ask this, and it seems fitting as we are talking about personal style. Do you and or Lindsey wear fragrance at all? I am the same way about perfume and scent as I am about clothing. I think fragrance can create another layer of a persons aesthetic. I love scent, and it seems to be as much a part my style as clothing, shoes accessories. I like to layer and create an aura that no one else has. Interestingly, I don't care for designer fragrances, with the exception of a few. Margiela being one, Tom Ford, some Chanel. I prefer the niche and artisan houses, which in the perfume world would be like high end and sometimes obscure designers. Margiela's fragrances are interesting as you might guess. They push boundaries, but not like his clothing does, also his fragrances are easily accessible where his clothing is not. Anyway, I was just wondering, because I love the topic of fragrance as much as clothes

Depop has the best search system for finding designer cheep. I use other sites a little bit I always check to see what they have but I find Depop to be the best for selection and price. I also don’t mind high quality reps as long as they have a tag everything is spelled correctly and the material is nice who cares for most things I couldn’t tell the difference if I tried. If someone could tell the difference and called me on it I would just play stupid and pretend I bought it second hand. Nothing beats the price of high quality reps if your looking for cheep designer. I follow the 150 rule I try to buy things at least that price or more because then I care more about the peice and I take care of it and you usually get what you pay for.
