Finding an apartment is difficult if you don't know what you are doing. I assume you went to an agent and let them show you around? That isn't really the easiest way to do it. The best way is to go on a website like Ganji or get the phone app. Look at all the apartments in the area. You can even see comments of other people that have went and looked at that same apartment. Then you can contact the agent directly on the website and ask questions. This way you don't just go look at 50 apartments and find nothing. When in China, do as the Chinese do. The Chinese do practically everything on a mobile device.

So true. Having a local friend that can help you is invaluable. Going the "tourist/foreigner" route is absolute nightmarish. You'll find 33% higher rates due to the "english speaking agent" taking a huge cut, expecting foreigners to be ignorant to pay more than the apartment is really worth. As for signing the contract and stuff, really doesnt matter. You can just ask a local friend to rent it in their name, and you can live there. Nobody cares. :)

Thank you for making a video even though you're feeling sick. I really appreciate that you describe exactly what you're going through and give us useful information on the realities of travelling. I can imagine it would be difficult to come up with new ideas for videos but honestly you are very inspirational and anything you make would be fun and interesting to watch! You obviously had a dream and are living it very independently and that in itself is awesome! Thank you and can't wait for more videos!

Hello Jordan, I'm more than happy when I see your video notification popping up. I might be wrong but I think you're someone who is very perfectionist. Take care of yourself and take all time you need to make yourself and your bf comfortable in your new apartment. Inspiration and creativity always knock on your door at the moment when you expect the less. For myself, they always come to say hi to me while I'm washing dishes, taking a shower or while I'm going to the gym.

In northern China, renting an apartment is similar to what we have in California. If you and the owner agree to rent an apartment, everything is stated in the lease agreement which includes the actual rental amount and a one-time commission you pay (commission is one month rental). Often, the commission is split 50/50 between the owner and the renter. It's very simple and clear.

Looks like a great apartment complex! Yours and Poppy's vlogs are the first I've ever followed. It's so cool to live vicariously through a complete stranger in a foreign country. Vlogs are like modern day travel writing in that respect. About the creativity thing, I wouldn't set any deadlines for vlog uploads. That way you'll never feel like you're missing one! And in terms of inspiration, if it's ok to video at cultural events in China, show us some concerts and other events in town. Also, I guess you could look at other vlogs to get ideas.

I just thought another event you could go to is traditional Chinese opera. That looks like an interesting window into Chinese culture. And I don't know if vlogs usually include interviews, but it would be cool to interview some people in town. Personal histories can be very interesting.

Regarding writer's block: often once you stop creating for too long there might be difficulty in initiating a new project. One thing I found to work is to somewhat "force it", give yourself like an hour to sit there and write (or film about something), forcing yourself into that mentality, knowing that you may discard this hour of work (or who knows, sometimes it turns out great, or great after some editing later). Once IN that mentality, everything flows again. Especially with vlogging, you can perhaps just get into the habit of keeping your camera ready and handy and filming everything and anything that catches your attention. Even if you can find nothing to say, just film it, and it'll be in your "bank of short clips" to be used later.

I think what makes your videos so special is watching you interact within so many different cultures. Sometimes you have very specific plans you follow and sometimes it seems more spontaneous. But it's always thought provoking and makes your viewer wonder what they might do in similar circumstances. Take this video for example, I'm sure many of your followers are now wondering how long they might try to locate an apartment before deciding to move on to the next adventure. You've given many people much to ponder. All while encouraging people that may be on the fence about doing something similar to this. In short, I guess I'm saying not to worry about being creative. You've already done that, that's why so many are still here following your travels. We enjoy you and wherever and whatever you want to show us. Hope you feel better soon. Take care and be well....

Hey, travel girl, Hope U will get better soon, I used to live in Guangdong for years but I moved to Canada now..Also, strongly agree with your viewpoint that something bizarre could happen when you turn your hobby into a job. We are always searching for the balance regarding pretty much everything. Well, I knew a lot thing both modern and traditional in Guangdong, but it is going to be a long story. I actually have one friend, a really cute girl who is traveling in Newzealand for now and she will be back to Shenzhen in a couple of months. Truly believe that she is going to be able to help you on inspirations because she is young but was born in a Guangdong area with loads of traditions and amazing food, apart from that, she is a writer and has been traveling a lot in and out of China. It is the time to dig into the traditional and modern combination of this country, which is exactly what you would like to show to other culture.

The agent is also acting as a service not to just snag money changing hands. You are an unknown foreigner, they don't know you, perhaps you always give party and destroy apartment, make big mess, noisy, etc., if this happens it is ultimately the agent that is responsible to either get you out of apartment or if big damage occurs and you skip and run owner makes agent pay to fix apartment.

i don't exactly know the rental situation in shenzhen but in shanghai you only pay agency fee once before you closed the deal with landlord, even the agency fee for apartment rental is fixed rate on 35% from rental fee so i think that agency really trying to rip you off. HELL NO!! i'm paying that agency service charge every month, that's OBSOLETE!!

It is very easy to get a cold or cough in the humid heat with the slow-drying sweat and blasting A/C. In China you can get antibiotics like cephalosporins cheaply over the counter and that's usually the quickiest way to beat the cough. Don't wait for it to develop into something more persistent.

Also, just to let you know, you should go register at the nearest police station that's in the new area you belong to. Make sure you get a copy of the resident registration certificate with your updated address. There are heavy fines for not registering with the police station when you change living locations.

When I first traveled to China in 2007 to teach English for a year, one of my favorite actives quickly became taking a walk after dinner with friends and exploring the narrow lanes of the subtropical city we lived in. With a couple of lamb or chicken skewers in hand, we were set to explore the city for the night. On our nightly walk to the river that ran through the city, we observed the people around us selling clothes from carts along the streets and students playing ping pong in a park. Everyone was outside doing something (or nothing) and you felt like you were a part of it. One of the best things about China is that you can walk out of your door and everything and everyone is right there waiting for you. As China continues to grow, more and more foreigners are choosing to travel, live, work, or do business in China. No matter what your reason for exploring this vibrant country, the below tips on how to get by during your first days will help give you the confidence to buy your ticket and go have fun in China. #MasterMyVideo #IAmSoFunny #ILikeYoursVideos #YoumakeMeLaughingALot #DontStopMakingVideos #ILikeYourMood #ILikeChinaAndCanada #IPreferAsiaToHaveATrip #SoCoolAndSmart #ILikeSZ #Shenzhen #China #Mainland #HK #HongKong #HighGDPOfChina #PowerNextCenter #travel #traveling #ChineseBillionnaire #PoliticsIsFordbiddenInChina #GoToChinaBeacauseThisLocalDestinationIsReallyCool #TryToManageWithTheMandarinLol #VacationIsFunInChina #VisitingChinaIsAFantasticWayOfFreedom #IDonTSpeakChinese #ChineseDonTSpeakEnglishLol #SeeItAtTheInstagood #TripGoToChinaSoCoolDestination #holiday #TakeSouvenirAndPhotoChina #TheMountainGreenValeyIsFun #TravellingIn5StarsHotelIsCheaperThanInEuropeAndUSA #tourism #tourist #instapassport #GoToPassToTraveForgoingToVisitChina

Tbh, summer in China can be really hot. A lot of Chinese people,if there is opportunity, like spending summer time traveling abroad to a cooler place. You can consider visiting Karuizawa and Hokkaido in Japan, famous tourist attractions in East Asia, beautiful summer view, much cooler(around 20 C in summer). Come back visiting China when the weather is cooler!

The realtors don't take a cut every month. I don't know where you get the idea or it is just your speculation or it's the way they do it in Shenzhen(I highly doubt it). I live in Shanghai and I let my apartment to American expats. The realtors in Shanghai only charge a one time commission out of the first month rent. After that, my tenants deposit their money directly into my wechat account every month.

Have a good rest and wish you can get well soon. Normally 2 bedrooms apartment in Futian will ask for 5000-7000, 3 bedroom 7000-9000. And the agent will charge one month's rent as commission, the landlord will pay half of that and the you should pay the rest to the agent. But you can ask for 10-20% off. Say the rent is 8000RMB/month, you only need to pay 4000RMB to the agent, if you ask for a 10% discount, you pay 3600RMB to the agent.
@kiloliang6310
@kiloliang6310 7 жыл бұрын
about the agent's commission, it's not correct. They charge you only 50% of the first month rent, another 50% to the landlord. So the agent's goal is more about cutting the deal, not raise the rent. try Siji Huacheng, it's a nice community with metro.

Hey Jordan. Glad to see you're getting settled in China ! If you're struggling to come up with interesting new video concepts I wouldn't mind if you just switched on the camera and shot a 5-10 min video of you sitting in your apartment simply updating us on how you're getting on. This type of content might not convert many new casual viewers into subscribers but would please existing more longer term subscribers. It might take some pressure off you feeling that every video has to be super exciting which personally speaking, I don't think they have to be. You and your personality are the most appealing things about this channel even more than the places you visit.

Also which agency did you go to? its usually NVR a monthly commission. they agency gets maybe 1 to 1.5 months rent for using their services any other fees the landlords are responsible for which is why they may raise the price but that isn't final since the price can be negotiated with the landlord. if you can't negotiate the price you can definitely negotiate amenities or newer appliances if the others aren't up to par. China is very much a play or get played country so negotiating for pretty much any and everything is key. It would also help to at least have learned some of the basic apartment vocabulary there are tons of resources online. I've lived there and will be moving back very soon but my biggest tip will be to learn the language somewhat and also be willing to negotiate.

As an artist I hear you, my inspiration comes in waves also. What I have figured out over the years is to take advantage of moments of creativity, do as much as I can when inspired, and then during down times try not to stress about it, concentrate on other aspects of life.... I know if your income depends on it that might be hard to do, but maybe a similar plan might work for you, when inspired make as many videos as possible, but then don't upload all of them, save some for days you cant come up with something.....

Yarrr. Eye patches are cool! ;-) Regarding creativity. I like to make lists, mind maps, and general scribbles wherever I go, so if something pops into my head, I just pop it down. Creativity is definitely a fits and spurts kinda thing. Some days are awesome, some are meh. Don't worry about that. Believe in your mind. Notebook by the bed is great too for those late or middle of the night brainstorms. Also, try changing your physical point of view, listen to different sounds, music, sound tracks, city sounds, nature. Get out of your normal day to day environment to change things up. I enjoy waterfalls, walking paths, taking random pictures and videos that put me in a different mental place. Music (listening and playing) is awesome for that too. Another great chain for creativity is the "what is the brick and under the brick" idea, where there are so many interesting things in the world right in front of you. Imagine looking around you right this moment. Pick anything. Look at it, examine it. Where did it come from? What's it made of? Who made it? How did it get there? Why is it there? What's it's history? Then, once you've answered questions and explored that, look right next to it. Start again. You can do this pretty much everywhere. Life is so amazing, and is full of surprises. You might just find new adventures that will take you to some very interesting and fulfilling places! And most of all, enjoy it! :-D

You should go to a hospital to check your cold and eyes' issue, especially your eyes' issue. Nanshan hospital is good for foreign patients and maybe not far away from your apartment (by metro). I think the best thing you can do is to get a backup cash flow. I do not know if you are still doing the stock market? When you are really doing things for long enough, you can really find a formula creating things. Some ancient poem writers in China would write down any good lines they came up with, and they put them together later. I do not know anything about creative writing, and that is just something I pick up in Chinese history. There are some websites like Ganji, 58, mayi, and something similar. They are basically Craiglist in China. BUT WATCH THE SCAM.

Thanks for sharing! Hope you get well soon. Actually this happened in western country as well. Most of the agents are commission based here in Australia. They earn their part for the cost for listing, advertising, contacting all sort of things. So I think that is fair. Not anything unethical.

I live in Hangzhou Zhe jiang province, rent a (1100 RMB)room in suburban area,actually the area is a village. there is no key money, my landlord is a farmer.it's big to me, have bathroom with it ,can not cook.Transportation is not a big problem for me,there is bus everwhere and metro stations are not very far away.I also have my electric bike,a lot people (almost every family ) have it in China,it can cover the whole city about 40 km mileage .

HAHA, I had an apartment in Luohu, the rent I offer my tenant is RMB3600. A little bit below the average. If it is unoccupied, I will decide to rent the apartment for you.

You can use 58.com or just walk around the neighborhood you are interested in and look for red or neon colored flyers that are glued on the walls of the buildings around.

You can fix your eye with a mix of Turmeric and water. Don't get this paste in your eye - only put it on the skin. Although you're probably all healed by now but thought I'd let you know anyway :) x

Dude, at 4:30, that's exactly by where I lived in ShiXia, nice quiet area with lots of metro & buses. Bit pricy considering it's close to CocoPark, but I liked it, will be going back again end of the year. There"re also lots of apps to download onto your phone for apt rentals, just you gotta know how to read Chinese...good luck apt hunting!

congrats for your new flat, don't wrestle with creativity just keep making the videos, which to me are great; and, feel better and don't let china get to you, for it's a great place to make videos because of the contrast. all the best...

We refer to it as 'getting Gringoed'... You need to ask a local what the real rates are, and then make offers at the real price level. This is not the only challenge when renting abroad...as to 'inspiration', I like to just quit making videos, and that way, the inspiration fires itself up, but not if you feel guilty...

I think you can go some other places now. I know it's too hot in Shenzhen during Summer. I already can't bear the heat in early May. I suggest Qingdao, Dalian, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang Should be some good choices for this time.
