Joan of Arc Died May 30, 1431, Rouen, France. It is a commemorative medal. She was canonized May 16, 1920; feast day May 30; French national holiday. That medal could be over a hundred years old and would be one of the original minting's made of silver. Nice find! Sorry to hear about Simons slip and fall - speedy healing Simon, we don't bounce like we used to ;)

The first medal in the second row is St Theresa of Lisieux (Little Flower). She is always holding a crucifix with roses. The medal Simon held out in his palm kind of looks like a St Benedict medal. Thank you for sharing your discoveries with us. Simon take care of yourself.

Or even better using a room near the chapel to make a museum dedicated to the convent's history. They could then charge a small fee so that people can come and look at the museum and the chapel...the money raised could be used to fund future projects.

I thought the same and would it not be great to just put a flag where these were found? There might be a relationship to one or two of the "stations of the cross"--a particular place the one or most of the Nuns made offerings and prayers? I just wish there was a Nun or (former) Nun who would be willing to share a few things with the crew to bring some of the "life" back and history.
@danielciocilteu3545

If this is going to be a hotel, then the most obvious place to make a small museum of the convent is in the reception room. That way you dont take up an extra room just for a museum and you also have a richly decorated reception room with some old pics of the convent, a short history panel and some of the items found on the grounds.

Our daughter lived in a home that had been owned by catholics at one time. The woman had buried a St Michael medallion under an oak tree (A neighbor said so) that was close to the house. I believe it was a way to ask for protection of the family. One very wet winter while our daughter and her family were at home the huge oak blew down in the wind and totally avoided the house. No one was hurt but it took days to cut and remove the tree from the front garden and street. So burying medallions may have to do with the nuns praying in the grotto.

I remember stone benches next to the wall where you believe the stations of the cross might have been. Did you move them or are the benches somewhere else. If a nun did pray or sit there for contemplation, that would be a place where you might bury old worn medalions you've replaced or lost. Curious 😏.

The abundance of religious medals may be a way the nuns had of disposing of blessed articles. Often, when items like holy cards and medals, rosaries, etc. are to be disposed of, these blessed items would not have been thrown in the garbage. Often they will be buried in consecrated earth so that they don't have to be thrown in the tip.

To make it easier to separate finds from soil, a 'garden riddle' with several grades of sieves from course to fairly fine would make the job easier when metal detecting. Easy to source brand new on-line relatively cheaply or secondhand in car boot sales, charity shops etc. Normally a garden riddle is used for sieving compost when seed sowing to remove lumps and allows the gardener to cover their seeds to just the right depth. I'd recommend buying one with powder coated metal and not plastic sieves in the frames as they're less likely to break over time with repeated use. Metal ones tend to come with a wider range of gradients.

I love the exploration days! Never uneventful. The stations of the cross is a very peaceful and respectful place. I know you will eventually expose them. What cool finds… so sweet!

Very interesting! Gets you thinking about the everyday life of the nuns that lived at the convent. Would love to see more!

I love the detective work of metal detecting. Well done for finding the medals and cross. They are beautiful. A nice display case with the finds and a history of the convent would be excellent. I recently dug up some of my small garden and found a glass horse, some house nails. I look forward to digging up the rest. It’s a Victorian terraced cottage, so lots of goodies to look forward to.

One of the little oval ones is a Miraculous medal. There is a novena that goes along with it, a set of prayers you pray. The Joan of Arc one is beautiful. Nice finds. Would look great in a glass case for display!

I love how patient Simon is with the metal detecting. I think I might be the same as you Billy just because there is so much ground out there and I’d be moving around a lot. I think you should definitely display all these medals in a case as the story of the convent is preserved.

So sorry to hear Simon fell, glad he is okay. I find the metal detector findings very interesting. Just thinking about how old they are, the person they belonged to, how they came to be buried in the garden, etc.
