Definitely keep the slotted dish mags. When I was a teenager I got my first car in 1985. It was grandmas 1973 Chevelle 2 dr. 350 2bbl. I dressed it up with slotted dish mags with white letter Goodyear Eagle tires. I "hot rodded" it by replacing the 2bbl with an Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley 650; and the stock single exhaust with Hedman headers, and a 2 1/4 dual exhaust from JC Whitney. My only regret: My dad's buddy talked me out of glass pack mufflers in favor of turbo mufflers ("lower back pressure = more HP"). They were too quiet. I wasn't after performance, I wanted the car to sound cool. And - can't forget, replacing the AM/FM radio with a Kraco AM/FM cassette and 4 speakers. That was a bitchin' ride.

it feels like a dirty trick, but boy does it work! I scored the cut up remains of a 1966 mustang coupe--rear window, dented trunk lid, side door, front frame with 289/3spd still bolted in, and the front windshield/firewall as one piece. Paid $100 b/c the old lady was sick of it blocking her chance to park a new car in the garage. Peeled the dashpad off the dashboard still attached to the firewall, sold that for $100 to a guy on disability trying to restore a coupe for his daughter, and sold the engine/trans for $350. Stripped the firewall/dash of everything, sold the front windshield still in its frame, with firewall attached, for another hundo--buyer wasn't thrilled, but I pointed out he was getting the chrome for free, and the firewall could serve as patch paneling. I wasn't going to risk busting the windshield. Yes, I could have made more, but it was all profit after the dashpad, and affordable prices kept my parents from complaining about all this #$#% in the yard. now its the small stuff like the clutch pedal assembly, master cylinder, gauges etc. One day i'll do a rat rod and need all that little stuff.

My family had a 73 slant 6 225 Duster that my sister wrecked - she spun it out of a gravel parking spot by the road, did a 360 and wrapped it around a spruce tree. Fully negligent. Was never charged. We did a body restoration, but the torsion bar front suspension gave up soon after that (again while she was driving it, no wonder.) It was a somewhat rusty Canadian example but she killed that car before I ever got to drive it. And they say women are better drivers LOL. Yes, they are better at avoiding cop tickets & getting good insurance rates despite writing off cars, that's all they are any better at. Only good thing is the spruce tree survived.

Sometimes dumb luck is your best friend. I had bought a new Chev Silverado and needed a tonneau cover for the bed. I typed in "Tonneau" on CL and all sorts of listings showed up. One of them was for an almost perfect 1973 MGB. The owner had listed "comes with tonneau cover" in the description so that's why it popped. Now, I needed an old British sports car like I needed another hole in the head but the pics looked interesting so I called. It was an older man with cancer. He stated that he owned it since new and parked it due to a cracked head(a very common issue with that generation) 7 years prior but just could work on it. It was in a storage area with furniture piled all over it and four flat tires. I brought a jumper pack and hooked it up anyhow. ALL of the lights worked...and the engine not only turned over, it fired on 7 year old gas. I killed it before it actually ran...but I saw what I needed. I explained that I had no use for it, but that I would guarantee I would have it running in a month or so, so gave him a ridiculous offer of $2k. He said "I'll sell it to you for that IF you'll bring it by the house so we can see it running once you get her back on the road"...which I did. I not only brought it back, but insisted he and his wife take it for a spin which they did and were grateful that they had gotten to do so. He then gave me 3 boxes full of parts and such, thanked me profusely and I still have that little car to this day. He died last year however I do occasionally see his wife and she still thanks me for letting him drive it prior to his passing.

Not sure what the rest of the market is like over there in the USofA, but things have gone ballistic down under, an equivalent Aussie model Valiant in that condition, would pull serious drug money. A 69 Aussie hardtop (essentially a 67/68 Dart with Aussie front panels and right hook) with rusty floors, chassis rail and the usual lower rear quarter rust would chase $5,000 even with no running gear. That Duster Sir, was a nice pick up.

I'm 20 years old and its kind of hard to find people my age that actually like working and dealing with older cars. The trick to finding good cars that are classics is being friends with some older guys, not being cocky and willing to learn. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from my grandfathers old buddies so this knowledge isn't forgotten like working on carbs/ driving a manual transmission

I've been looking for a mid 60's chevy wagon and finally found one. Same kind of deal. Pretty much got it for half the cars value because the guy knew I'd cherish it and love it and not chop it up. I've looked for YEARS. It takes time, guys.

Ok I live in Rexburg Idaho and if you drive around the back words here you can find stuff like this all the time, as a example there is a guy down in Ririe Idaho who has two little red trucks in his yard and other mopar stuff just sitting there waiting for the right offer, plus some of these farmers have old trucks from the 40s and newer just in the back parts of the land, so I know there out there.

Although it's getting more difficult,Good deals can still be found. My ten year old son loves El Caminos, and while they were never a car I liked,I started looking.I found a car in primer,a real solid driver (similar to the Duster in condition) and purchased it for 1,000 dollars. My plan is to have it painted and a driver restoration done by his sixteenth birthday,With my son learning about cars and helping along the way.

Good find. It seems to me a lot of the guys that say everything is expensive or everything is junk. have their expectations to high, they would say but Tony there is a hole in the floor its only a 6 and its in primer. Then when you find them a finished car they say it cost to much. I gave up trying to help my dad find a car it was so frustrating.

G'day from down under Tones. I'm typing this upside down of course... I reckon the bloke liked/respected and valued the way you were just up front with him, shared the fact that he could source possibly/probably better pricing on Craig's List/eBay etc. He knew you were good guys mate, besides the carve up. However long the resto does or does not take, even if you don't get around to it or plans change in future you did an honest and ethical deal. Good encouragement for others too....thumbs up !

I got a '66 Wildcat Sport Coupe from my brother-in-law in May. 425 engine, switch pitch transmission, new interior, very little rust. He told me he had to get rid of some cars. I told him I didn't have any money right now.... broke. Happy Birthday he said, then he drove it 750 km (450 miles) from his place to mine to surprise me. So far, I have put $4000 into it and next week she gets a motor rebuild (Not burning, leaking... 450 miles, 2 quarts). I love my Wildcat, almost as much as my brother-in-law.

i had a 1971 duster ratty i guess lol at best it was 1993 94ish in ohio i was 16 i really liked it 6 cyl 3 speed just like yours there it looked solid but the main structure there across the bottom where front end ties into floorboards had been rotted thru then patched over very crudely but i traded a 84 amc eagle for it strait up it was just a beater too but i drove it a few months and traded it off but i always liked the dusters and dart swingers being born in 77 they were still very plentiful and alot of em fixed up on the street when i was growing up i always really kinda thought highly of the unique factory floor shifters kinda reminded me of a pig tail with the little corky bend in em

Hey Tony, I live in the high desert of southern California and yep...we've got rust free cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors littering the landscape. A couple of my buddies make a pretty good living selling CA sheetmetal to the rust belt guys. Too bad it costs so damn much to ship these vehicles back east. But you're right...they're still out there waiting for the new owner to rescue them.

@@inlandspeed6670 yep...I just got myself a '65 F100 for $300.00 bucks...straight as an arrow, no rust and complete as the day she left the line. Code enforcement forces the owner to get rid of it. He had 30 or more old vehicles on his property. What a gold mine. His '68 Belvedere went for $3,000.00 though...kinda pricey for a slant six car but boy was it clean and original.

Thing is tony, deals like that are very hard to come by, I waited for years and years, searching eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc for Mercury cougars, (we collect them) and well, I was driving a 69 Mercury Cougar, literally as base as a Cougar could get, basic interior panels(surprisingly rare) no options beside power steering and a vinyl top, 352 2V car but someone put a 70’ Mach 1 351 4V engine in it and the car was a blast to drive, was a nice solid car but had always been looking for every car collectors paradise. I was getting groceries and I was greeted with a note on my windshield. A guy had a Cougar which was his father and laws and he was looking for someone who would give it a good home, we kinda had too many but we agreed to take a look(I’m 18 and my dad moves the money but we work on them together,) so we go to his house and he had some of the original paperwork, I read the vin and turns out it was an M code car, trying to calmly keep my composure as I tell my dad this. Turns out the car was indeed an M code XR7. It was the guy’s father in laws car who had passed away, and he was the second owner. The father in law got it second hand in 1972 from a rich guy who sold it to him for cheap. Turns out the father in law was a pastor and only drove the car on Sunday’s. Meaning the car was always kept garaged, and driven every single week. Had 60k miles on it, one tiny rust spot (rust belt here, should’ve been a LOT WORSE) power steering, power windows, AC, all the options you could imagine (except posi for whatever reason) and best of all original paint which shined like it was brand new despite being so dirty. He never listed the car online because he wanted someone to take care of it. It was definitely a barn find car and in absolutely amazing condition. Point it, if I wasn’t driving one, we would’ve never found out about the car. We just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Basically just as rare as trying to find an unmolested car that isn’t a piece of junk online
