I think this movie was great especially for families with kids who have disabilities. I did tear up when she found her parents again because despite her mental disability, she turned her weakness into a strength. I don't think it's "Emotionally Manipulative," I think it's real.

I love pixar, I actually strive to work there but the whole film felt very rushed. A lot of jumping around like "now we're here, then over here because we have to see the whole aquarium, gotta fit a lot of different scenery into this movie". There was rarely any places where I didn't feel rushed to keep up with it. The first one felt much more fluid as the scenes flowed better because it took them time to swim from the great barrier reef to Sydney but this one really sped up the process which is kind of a let down since I love the first movie so much. Also there was a lot of recycled material just with either different characters or scenarios like the driving of the truck, It felt very toy story 2 to me.

I completely agree with you. But I'm glad Disney broke out of their movie formula. - Set two main characters that dislike each other on an adventure. - Have two main characters see each other not as useless as they thought they saw. - Conflict between the two main characters for 5-10 minutes. - Have the two characters make up and take on their greatest challenge. There were some parts in the movie where I laughed, but other than that, it was kinda a let down. But once again, I'm glad they changed and broke through their formula while trying to make a good movie.

@slappy2013
@slappy2013 8 жыл бұрын
It wasn't something bad. It was something she noticed and I did too, like WOW there are so many scenes where there are couples like in the beginning or when dory is in the open ocean or how I got that they were hinting at dory and Marlin being a couple. I don't know but I was always noticing all the couples in a film about a single parent. And 99% the fish that dory asked where couples in a sequel to a film about a single parent.

I really loved that scene where the Beluga was like, "Wait, let me zoom out". It's minor, but for people that use computer programs, they'll find it very humorous which I love. i even loved when they lost track of the truck and you can see the lose connection static like a TV. Inside Out IS on the level of the original Pixar films. Which contains Wall-E, Toy story 1&3, Up, Incredibles and Finding Nemo Finding Dory is in the Monsters Inc, Bug's Life, Ratatouille, Toy Story 2 ballpark. The there's Cars, Cars 2, Monsters University, Good Dinosaur (should not have released this), and Brave.

What really got me out of the movie was the fact that the fish were hopping around from water to water, from one cup to a tank with a toy fish in it, to a fountain, etc. yet these are ocean fish, who are meant to live in salt water. There was a problem with many people going out and buying Blue tangs without having the proper expertise to take care of them, yet the movie did no favors by making it seem like all these fish need is a little bit of water from any source and they're fine.

I saw the film tonight. I, too, had problems with the third act and the after credits sequence. I won't get into the issue of a fish constantly being switched between fresh and salt water. For me, the third act demonstrated a carelessness in the storyboard sequence. So, the film begins with the chase of the truck by Dory and company. Baily the Beluga uses echolocation to locate the truck. First off, I do not know what Bailey was doing. i do know it was not echolocation, as defined in the in-universe (display seen near Open Ocean Exploration) or the real world. Both show echolocation as a means by which a whale can send signal to a target and receiving that signal with information on the target. it is the equivalent of our SONAR. I can relate to what Grace is saying about the traffic accident, which ties into the Dory plan of using the otters. Tonight, as I was driving to the theater, I had a near-miss. Both the pedestrian and I were not paying diligent attention to the road. I was absorbed in my thoughts, and she was looking down at the ground while jaywalking and not paying attention to traffic on either side of her. I became aware of her just seconds before I impacted her. She was shocked into realization of what might have happen. Now, applying to this movie. Traffic is moving on a highway at highway speed. There is no way that the family's car would have stopped in time and no way that they would have spun as they did and no way that they were not side impacted by two lanes of traffic. The family and the otters and Dory would be ground zero of a massive, gory mess. Then, the truck, commandeered by the octopus and Dory, finds itself in a roundabout. I have lived in California most of my life. I have never known of a roundabout on a highway. Then, the truck drives back to the Institute. it crosses the median barrier by smashing into those barrels. I have never seen barrels put on the median barrier. They are placed on the ramps. (They are designed to slow a vehicle in trouble, like if the brakes failed.) The truck would have been wrecked. Then, the truck is driven off the cliff into the water. Grace has a point about the rear doors. She did not fully illustrate the problem. The truck is facing forward as it ploughs into the water. The rear doors would not have open. They could have only open if the truck was driven backwards, with the cargo slamming against the truck. This did not happen. In the situation presented in the film, some of the fish could have swum free through the same openings that the octopus and Dory passed through on the emergency hatch, if they survived being flung against the front of the cargo wall. Finally, in the after credits sequence, there is a shot of the aquarium fish from the first movie. It is implied that they survived in their bags, with their grime clinging to the sides, for a year. Sorry, no. They would be dead fish. Finally, for myself, the third seal with the bizarro eyebrows was downright creepy. I did not need the last image of this film being that creepo seal. Ugh.

I'm going to a University on Moneterey and our mascot is an otter so maybe that's why the aquarium focuses so much on otter. Pixar's reputation has been hit but I don't think its any where near as bad as you say it is. The way I see it, their hitting streak ended but they still have a great batting average. I have mix feelings on the returning characters. A stand alone Dory could've been interesting but I have a hard time believing Marlin would abandon her after everything she did for him. Crush is a plot device and his appearance is short so it doesn't bother me.

Hey Grace! I am a subscriber and watch all your videos. I just got out of the theater acting watching Finding Dori. I do not think this film should be categorized in Pixar's sequel slumps. I loved it! Yes the film has its problems but the family and I enjoyed it. I have not had fun like that at the movie theater in quite awhile. I am a doctoral student studying film so when I do go to the theater it is difficult for me to remove my analytical lens. Children centric films make it easier because I really go for my daughter. Two issues I have with the Finding Dori is the pacing and misplaced montage. The pacing is unbalanced in the film. The worse pacing moment (and consequently the tone) was the cut following the climax. Pixar could have done better to smooth out the falling action. As for the misplaced montage, traditionally the montage is positioned in the second to third act transition when incorporated. However, Finding Dori has it early in the first act when showing her progression in age. One of the more memorable moments (for me at least) in Finding Nemo was the montage where Marlon's story crosses the sea. I think Finding Dori could have benefited from a similar montage, at least in placement. However, the absence of that montage does not surprise me considering Pixar was trying to distinguish itself from Finding Nemo and an inclusion of such a montage would have been ultra derrivative. Just thought I would add a comment because you always encourage your spectators to. I will do my best to comment more often. I love Beyond the Trailer and Movie Math. I look forward to more!

I do agree with a lot of your points Grace. To me Pixar is at their best when they let the worlds they create unfurl naturally before the audience, which necessitates a measured approach to allow for the appropriate amount of time for such aspects to manifest organically, and these can be seen not only in the environments but in the characters themselves. My biggest problem with the movie, besides the limited scope taking away from the potential magical grandeur that I know Pixar is capable of bringing to life, is the fact that a lot of the scene progressions (especially near the ending) and some of the plot elements seemed like half-assed Deus ex machina mechanisms, which totally was inauspicious for the development of the aforementioned natural progression of the world, and ended up making the ending feel rather contrived.

One thing that I wasn't sure about was in the first movie they had to cross the entire ocean and they end up in Australia which made me think they were on the east coast of the United States. Then at the end of Finding Nemo and at the beginning of Finding Dory they are back at the same reef where they started which again I would assume is on the West Coast. But then when they have to swim to California Marlin complains that they will have to go all the way across the ocean again. that just doesn't make much sense to me.

I agree that the new setting missed the majesty of the original. Finding Nemo was like a nature documentary except with plot and not narrated by David Attenborough. The aquarium was interesting, and was a very nice way to explain Dory's many traits ("pipe buddies" was a bit of a stretch though); however, it is very mundane compared to the fantastic things the ocean provided. Even though I loved Dory's story and character development, it seriously was just plot twist after plot twist and detracted from what little we got to see of the ocean. The whole integration with the humans was terrible as well. Not touching the truck sequence (because that was...nonsensical) but they must have caused Lord knows how much in damages and missing fish. The oblivious dentist and submarine were much better uses of humans. The sub kind of helped show how we pollute the ocean, but the wreck in Finding Dory was pretty much a cute set piece to throw a giant squid into.

I saw Finding Dory and loved it. I think that Pixar completely got back their quality and entertainment. This film was incredible for so many reasons you listed in your topics. Finding Dory was a huge step up from Finding Nemo. Even despite the unrealistic pieces to it, because let's be honest, this is a story about talking fish doing countless unrealistic things. There were characters to the max but it didn't take away enjoyment from the film.

To my view the fisrt 20 mins of the film are a disaster, I was about to drop. I think there were two mistakes. 1-They went a bit far with the manipulative aspect Grace mentions (on which I agree). I was expecting a not so dramatically sad forced opening. Finding Nemo is sad but not as forced as here in Finding Dory. 2-Repeating that Dory has memory issues, huge mistake, we know she has them...so why repeating the same over and over? besides, why was Dory repeating what the fish teacher was saying, it was not funny, it was annoying. Then, after those painful minutes the movie went on a crescendo finishing in a very very good way. I really loved the final act.

Up wasnt "emotionly manipulative" at all. It made u cry at the beginning of the movie but really thats it. And plus like a lot of people on here, I think youre being way too harsh to this movie...

I hope the next one is a revenge flick about grown nemo and his wife trying to kill the barracuda. Finding Coral.

Hi Grace, I just returned home from seeing Finding Dory, and I have to say, I enjoyed it quite a bit more than Finding Nemo! I thought it was a lot more interesting especially the parts at the aquarium. I am really happy with this movie. Keep up the great reviews!

I love the truck scene when it went to the water i think it will become a trend the super slow motion with a song like in the x men apocalypse movie.

I know it's totally off topic, but I would love if you reviewed the remake of roots.

I really enjoyed the movie as well as the short film Piper. I would put Finding Dory at #8 in My Pixar Top 10. I would give the movie a 9.5/10. It had an emotional depth that I didn't expect.

Why do you hate "Up" Grace?! Yes, it does have very emotional parts but only for the first 10 minutes. The rest is just creative and colorful with cleaver humor. I know I can't change your mind but just to let you know that UP is not only my favorite Pixar movie but also My favorite movie of all time still to this day.
