Finding faulty glow plugs on Jumper/Ducato/Boxer/Relay

In this technical episode we're looking at the glow plugs. We knew already none of the glow plugs were powering up due to a fault. This causes more difficult starts in cold weather. We take of the front of our Jumper to examine the glow plugs closer.
We didn't fix the faulty ones because they will likely snap off when trying to remove them. This is a more advanced job that we will likely hand over to the dealer to take care off.

Good video on this problm. I was told to use a circuit tester on the 4 pins of the loom connector to check for power. Mine has revealed that all 4 pins are showing no power at them. So now im going to test them with the multimeter as you have show . 🇬🇧

the glow plugs still go on after the ignition is turned on or does it depend on the outside temperature because I don't have voltage on the glow plugs when the ignition is turned on. thank you

It depends on the outside temperature. I think they will activate if the temperature is lower than 10C in my experience but I'm not sure about the exact threshold.

My van broke down and it was the EGR, fun fact was none of my glow plugs are working. you don't actually need glow plugs to start the engine as my van still starts without an issue. Thy just pre warm the diesel and its actually the compession in the engine that starts the engine. But winter is round the corner so needs must i gotta get new ones

Yes you are correct, it will start on compression. But it will start smoother with all (or some) of the glow plugs working. Especially in winter time, if the battery is not optimally charged, this can make a difference.

It's worth adding here that if you have a ducato 2.5 TDI, there is just one glow plug. And it only activates under 3 C.

Hi Matthew, I'm guessing the 2.5 is an engine on the older X244 (2003) Ducato model. My vehicle is the X250 (2006 and on) model. The 2.8 JTD engine on the X244 even has a different system and uses a flame starter: It will light a flame in the air intake in order to warm up the air instead of heating the cilinders with glow plugs...

@@Euronauts I have the 2.5 TDI. a 1996. Doing some engine work now getting ready for a trip to Morocco. Trying to find a kit right now that I can use to do a compression test.

Why did you leave the two faulty plugs disconnected? Does it matter if they are connected?

Yes, without the faulty plugs connected, the 2 working ones will still be powered on. It makes a huge difference when starting in cold weather. If the relay senses even 1 faulty plug, it will kill the power to all four!

none of my 4 glow plugs are working stills starts without an issue, you dont actually need them above 2 degrees
