Mushrooms aren't like acid. You don't hallucinate, you just see some colors, and things move. I've never heard of anyone having a bad trip on shrooms.

Awesome video as always! I found your channel months ago and binge watched every single video. So now I'm always excited to see a new upload. Just an idea, Aaron: during the dry, dog days of summer when there aren't very many mushrooms to go film, I know there are plenty of people like me who would love to see you make a video on something like taxonomy, ecology, or other topics of mushrooms. Spores, microscopy, discussing research articles, etc. There's a plethora of things we can talk for hours about. It might not get the same views as the videos where you're out finding mushrooms, but the true mycophiles like me will absolutely LOVE it! I personally enjoy your educational classroom-like material just as much as your field material!

I drove around logging roads yesterday scouting for spots. I didn't find anything so I headed back home and on my way down the mountain I saw a huge flagged out lobster on the side of the road. Ended up finding a nice patch but they were buggy or mushy only took one home. Also found some chanterelles in the same spot!

I love making tuna and rice with oyster mushrooms. I made lobster mushroom risotto last week with my finds and lobster/chanterelle eggs with havarti cheese yesterday after my trip to the woods! The red from the lobsters turned the eggs pink! Crazy color.

Hi neighbor! Wanted to start off by saying thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have learned and continue learning so much from your videos. Great video. I believe the lobsters actually change the spores to its own. Here in Maine I spread the old lobsters on the Brevipes and create larger lobster patches. Definitely more lobsters here during dry years. More host species during wet years.

Those chanterelles are much different than ours in the Midwest. Ours grow a bit bigger and come in peach, yellow and light orange. Just recently found my first harvest of black trumpets. It’s been an abundant fall here.

Can these be propagated to other outdoor spaces? I picked some wormy ones that had lots of mycelium, and planted them under more Ponderosa pines.

It's a long shot but you can try. Wild, mycorrizal mushrooms are almost impossible to plan or propagate.🍄🤙

What do the lobsters taste like? Do they need any special preparation?
@your_eulogy26882 жыл бұрын
Mild crab/lobster flavor and somewhat nutty in my opinion. Unless I'm cooking them wrong the texture always seems to be pretty crunchy. I always cook my mushrooms thoroughly but I didn't boil em or cook em for an hour. I've made risotto and ive made eggs with the lobsters so far they're one of my favorites to eat. Probably top 5 in my book. They turned my eggs pink, it was interesting.
@steiner19422 жыл бұрын
@@your_eulogy2688 thanks. I've found them before, but never in a state I'd consider eating. Will hopefully chance upon a early specimen this season.

@@steiner1942 this is my 1st year finding good ones. When picking lbs and lbs of chanterelles I'd stumble upon lobsters during the fall season and they're sooooo soggy/buggy and gross so I kind of stopped checking on em haha. I've yet to find an edible chicken of the woods...I only find dead old moldy ones. Gonna try the 3 spots I found em rotten last year and hopefully I'll be able to take some home. Got into mushrooms right before the pandemic haha perfect timing.

The Lobsters are coming up in Wisconsin. So are the Ghost Pipes (not that they're a fungus-they're a plant with no chlorophyll). They tend to come up at the same time. I believe the parasite is a mold. They're tasty at any rate and I have no adverse reaction. In my experience, if they smell like shellfish, they are in fact decrepit and past their prime.

A fellow mushroom hunter told me to never eat lobster mushrooms (which I love) because the orange parasite can grow on mushrooms other than brevipies and be toxic.. Has anyone ever had an issue eating lobsters? Is there a visual difference if the parasite is on a bad mushroom?
@mushroomwonderland12 жыл бұрын
The only two hosts that I have ever heard of, and you can check this, is R. brevipies and Lactarius paperatus, which are both known to be edible mushrooms. I have purposely never seen it occur on the ladder although it speaks of it in the literature. Perhaps in Europe. But there have been zero known reports of it parasitizing any kind of toxic mushroom. You're generally good to go with lobster mushrooms, except for the occasional allergic reaction that has nothing to do with toxicity. Also make sure to cook them thoroughly. But neither of the hosts are known to be toxic. 🍄🤙

@@mushroomwonderland1 Awesome. Thank you.
@carvedwood19532 жыл бұрын
Is that Russula technically a milk cap too? I read that lobsters are infected milk caps of some species. Is that incorrect or can the host be a couple different species?
@carvedwood19532 жыл бұрын
Also, does the lobster drop spores from the host or the parasite? or both?
@mushroomwonderland12 жыл бұрын
Russula and Lactarius are close genetically, they're both in the Order Russulaceae, and Hypomyces lactiflorum is known to parasitize R. brevipies and Lactarius paperatus, which happens to look very much like the R brevipies. Russula do not secrete lactation when gills are cut. I'm not sure if the spores coming from the lobster are from the parasite or the host, I'm planning on getting some under the microscope soon.
