Finding My Biological Family 30 Years After Being Adopted

It's the one year anniversary of buying our land together and thought it a good time to readdress how I found out I had a full-blooded brother. I was put up for adoption at birth and spent most of my life imagining and wondering who my birth parents were and what they were like.
When I was almost 30 I found out. Not only did I find both of my birth parents, but I discovered that they reconnected later in life, got married and had 2 more kids! In a matter of minutes, after nearly 30 years, I found out I was going to meet both of my biological parents, and that I had a full-blood brother and a full-blood sister. Never in all the years leading up to that moment did I ever expect to receive such amazing news. Literally, this scenario never entered my mind as even a hint of a thought.
This whole journey has been unbelievable, but one of the craziest things is how from the beginning it's as if we've always been together. I was almost 30 and Ryan was 16 when he found out about me, but our brotherly bond was there...apparent and felt by both of us from the start.

I too was adopted and in 2018 at 63 years old I found I have 7 full-blooded brothers and sisters, and a half-brother. I have met them all and everyone has accepted me with open arms. @@OurNewLand I started looking for my birthparents in 1979. Pre-internet and DNA testing. It wasn't until 2007 that I found them from a new search website. I had my birth mother and fathers name. After 11 years of my birth mother not wanting to tell her children about me, she came to the place where she was ready to tell them. They were all in shock I existed, but immediately accepted me into the family.

I came across your story because I received my original birth certificate from the state of NYC. She left her name on the birth certificate and I went searching I found the house and ect. Low and behold I found my sister my adopted family said I had and a brother. Now I have a younger sister 4 years. I finally saw a photo of my biological mother. We look exactly alike. I'm crying because I've never felt apart of anything I always had abandonment issues but I just want closure and to tell her thank you for giving me life. Without her I wouldn't have given birth to my greatest masterpiece my son.

I'm so happy you found your sister and saw a picture of your mom! Up until I found my biological family, my biggest wish was that I would someday get to see a picture of my father. I just always wondered if I looked like him. Now that I'm getting older, he and I look so much alike. As you now know, it's an amazing feeling having that connection -- the sharing of appearance. I can't put into words why that affected me so much, but it's powerful stuff. Best of wishes for your future with your sister.

I was adopted at 3. Wasn't told I was adopted, but knew something was up. Found the adoption papers at 16. The greatest joy in my life was finding my older sister. Somewhere deep in my heart I knew there was someone searching for me. Every adoptee has the right to know who they are, where they came from, and what medical history that can be put together.

On another note in our small family, my husband is adopted, my son-in-law is as well, but I did grow up with my natural mother. My husband was always traumatized by the fact that his parents were married and gave him up when he was two years old. My son-in-law has always been grateful for his adoptive parents. Ironically, he is clearing out the old family home and last night found a precious letter written by a foster parent to his soon to be adoptive parents giving them a darling, humorous, and detailed update on how he was thriving as a 1 year old just learning to walk, the foods he preferred, etc. The find had us all in tears, grateful for a foster family such as that.

I just saw your adoption story and I related to my family. My sister was 16 when she gave up her newborn and I was 13 and worried and prayed for years until they became adults and reconnected. I wrote a poem that I gave to My Nephew Full Grown... I met my nephew for the first time last year. I had waited 40 years to kknow him and it was soexciting. I wrote this little poem to him and the family that loved and raised him to express some of my feelings. I hope you like it. My Nephew Full Grown I am only a child but I know on this day You are part of our family even when you go away. My sister is young but very brave She has given you life with good people, I pray. Each year passes by and I remember with a tear Is this child happy and healthy; do you live far or near? We think of you often and worry with fear that you will not know you have always been dear. I thank God for your parents, their choice was the key I prayed and I hoped for them to find you for me. This gift of a child to form a new family of three; God answered my prayers with a miracle you see! Today I will meet my nephew full grown I too, am much older; I have grandchildren of my own! We share no memories of triumphs that have past Yet we share this miracle to finally meet at last! So, dear nephew this poem’s yours on the day we meet Will it be awkward or easy or just really neat? I’m not really sure what we will do or say But I am certain I will always remember today! Please forgive this poor gift of a poem from Aunt Jean I just had to tell you how much you and your family really mean!

Congratulations... In 1979 I found my birth father; he took me to meet his best army buddy who turned out to be my uncle who had been married to my birth mom's sister...within the month I met my mother...learned I had a brother and sister and a year later I found them...many good years, they have all passed now but I had 20 + years and very grateful to have found my story. Even more blessed to have had the best adoptive parents anyone could have wished for but we all long for "our" story. Happy for you!

I was adopted at (6) weeks old in 1975. In 2019 I found out the truth behind a lie when I did a popular DNA test. And the “real” father wants nothing to do with me. I don’t care how old you are, it hurts. Love your story! Very happy for other adoptees and their journeys. ❤️

Just stumbled upon this video… your life is very similar to ours. My mother gave up a child while going through a divorce. She had 4 other children as well. Then she had me 7 years later. The child who was adopted out found us when she was 32. Needless to say, our mother was elated!! As we were too!! It’s been 23 years now but it has never felt like she was ever not in this family. I randomly came across your video and cried….I experienced this in 2018 when I met my bio mother, father, maternal grandfather, and three half sisters after 44 years. It was absolutely surreal and it couldn’t have gone anymore perfect. @@OurNewLand exactly my experience. I think if you have a solid foundation with your adoptive parents (which I do) that just makes the whole thing even sweeter. I was certainly scared of hurting their feelings but they are secure in our relationship. When Kay flew down to SoCal to meet me in person, it was so freakin insane to walk into my childhood home with Kay to introduce her to my parents 😱 my dad has quite the sense of humor and he presented her a fat binder saying it was filled with receipts from the last 44 yrs that he wanted reimbursement for 😂 she was hysterical! My mom says she can see me in Kay and she felt immediately connected to her because she’s so connected to ME 🤯

I know exactly how you feel. I was adopted, and I met my mother and sister in my 20's, and the rest of my mother's kids, my siblings thereafter. I wasn't able to find my father's family until I took a DNA test, 50 years later. These tests are amazing...Unfortunately, my father died in 2015, so I didn't get to meet him, but I found my half-sister. We have only talked on the phone so far, but it feels as if I've known her my entire life. The most beautiful thing she said to me was "Our father would have been so proud of you" Well, I cried like a baby after we hung up. This meant the world to me ❤️

Hi Lyn, I found my birth father through Ancestry….by connecting the dots after finding a cousin. He died in 1998, but I finally found out who “He” was, because my birth mother wouldn’t tell me. He was married to someone else when I was conceived😮 Ha, imagine that. God Bless, and good luck❤

I understand your emotions because I also was placed for adoption at birth. I was 57 or 58 when DNA tests connected me to a younger half-sister, and several first cousins. I still haven't met any bio family in person, but I talk with that younger sister sometimes and we exchange messages and emails, and Christmas cards. My cousins keep providing me with more stories and photos and I feel like I know them all well. I have spoken to my younger paternal half-brother who had spent his life believing he was an only son. He quickly opened up to me and told me quite ab bit about our common father. I was floored when he offered to give me some of our fathers ashes if we do meet. Just that offer stirs great emotions in me. My oldest half-sister has acknowledge me and we have exchanged some messages. One of my first cousins died a couple of years ago and time is running short for the rest of us. I still have hopes I will be able to meet some, or most of them next year.

I watched another story a while back where a teenage girl and boy had a son and put him up for adoption and then later married and had more kids and reunited with the adopted son so it definitely does happen. Its a shame that the first born wasn't raised by his biological parents but it was the best decision at the time. So glad they all reunited. One big happy family for both biological family and adoptive family.

I was 10 when I found out my youngest aunt had a girl. My dream was to always meet her and see what she was like. My Aunt died suddenly 2 years ago and I month later my Sister received a email. How blessed you were. I also found my family. I had 2 brothers. One said I was a crazy lady and I never met him. The other was thrilled to meet me but he turned out to be a jerk. He had had 5 wives and he thought 5?? Kids who,had nothing to do with him. Both brothers are deceased now. I was rejected by the rest of the family. Two Aunts complained that I should be ashamed and to leave them alone. My mother denied me until she died. Her death certificate said she had 2 children, not 3. Of course a big dissapointed t but okay by me. I sent the Aunts a letter stating that I was ask ALWAYS about health questions. I said if they would complete the questions I sent I would never contact them again. I have not. That ended it for me.

I'm sorry to hear that, Janice. My adoptive sister (the one I grew up with) did not a favorable reunion with her birth mother. She doesn't even know if she has any siblings or half siblings. The medical questionnaires - yes!! Before finding my birth family, I always had to put "Unknown" to all the questions. I totally get it! I'm so sorry they wouldn't help you with that. I just happened to watch this video that came up on my feed. Your story is heartwarming and I’m so happy for you and your family! I’m 56 and for the first time in my life think I’m ready to pursue “finding” my birth family. I have very little to go by and was told my mother was from Dublin, Ireland. I’ll look into what you shared regarding an adoption registry. Many years ago I tried to find a process that could help me but came up with a dead end. I’m not going to do DNA testing so this might be another way. God bless you!

Great story, thanks for sharing. When I first met my brother at the age of 50 something I found it to be really bizarre as well. It was immediate the sense of 'we just fit/belong' same sense of humour, we laugh a lot. He looks like my sons. It is really weird, but in a good way. We were both adopted, so have that common understanding as well.

So awesome! The fact that you both understand what it's like to be the adoptee must add a comforting dynamic. I try not to proactively mention birth family to adopted family, and vice versa. In my case, they all care for each other and ask about the other side. But when I'm with one side, I try to keep the focus on them. Thanks for sharing your story.

As a birth mother...I don't say I "put up or gave up" my twin daughters. I "placed" my children with people who could care for them at a time I couldn't 😢. I have never got over that ...even still, after 35 years 😢

Adopted at birth in 1961. Birthmother refused to ever meet. Met an aunt and some older 1st cousins. Nothing like this happy story....but I feel the pain of all that you missed. Thanks to DNA, I found out who my father was. Unfortunately, I found out 20 years too late. Adoptive parents were older, raised me as an only child, did the best they could. I have attachment and trust issues but am happily single, child-free and live in a van with my cat. I grew up in the era where we were told, "your mother loved you so much she gave you away" (ostensibly to have a better life, but when you're given to strangers, there are no guarantees). Bottom line, many of us struggled and still do. Abandonment equals love?? Sure.

Great story. I'm a 60 year old adoptee and I spoke to my birth mother for the first time this week. It was quite surreal. I live in the UK and she lives in USA. She has 6 children, my half siblings, but she hasn't told them about me and is terrified of their reaction which is sad. I'm hoping she will tell them before she passes away. I have told her I won't contact any of them while she is alive but that I will be contacting them when she has passed on as I belive they have a right to know about me and they can decide if they want to get to know me or not. Her husband did know about me but he has passed on. My birth mothers older sister accepted me straight away and we have been chatting via WhatsApp for a few months now. She lives in Italy and she is delightful. She is working on my BM to try and get her to tell her children about me and she persuaded my BM to speak to me. I felt an instant connection to my aunt because she welcomed me straight away as soon as I DNA matched with her granddaughter who lives in Australia. She knew who I was instantly and asked her granddaughter to ask me if she could have my number. She wants me to go and stay with her in Italy as she wants to get to know me more. She phones me twice a week and we talk for hours. I feel like i've always known her. I'm hoping I can get to know my BM better if she gets over her shame of having had a baby out of wedlock. I also found my birth fathers side and learnt that he passed away in 1996. He also had 6 children in his marriage, so I have 12 half siblings, 6 in the USA and 6 in Ireland. It was quite a shock to find out I had that many siblings I can tell you. I haven't as yet contacted any of them. I found their names from my birth fathers obituary and I Googled them and found them on FB so I ,now what they look like and where they live. Just need a bit more time to assimilate it all before trying to contact them to introduce myself. Their mother has also passed on.

I was adopted from birth in Minnesota. When I was three we moved to Phoenix. When I was 45 I asked my mom if she had any information about my adoption. She gave me the document that had legally changed my name to what it is now. I took my birth name which was not common and went to the main library where they had phone books from all over the country. I started in Minneapolis but nothing. I called a woman that ended up being my birth aunt in Pittsburg and asked if she new of anyone with my birth last name in the Minneapolis area and it ended up being my birth mother. I was talking with her eight hours after I started looking for her. The next summer I took my parents on a driving trip to Minnesota to visit relatives. I went by myself to meet my birth mother, her husband and two sisters as well as my grandmother who had flown in from Pennsylvania to meet me. The next day I took my parents. I have seen them all several times since and we stay in touch.

Very interesting. I have a very similar story,I adopted two kids out, always worried about them but I already had three kids going thru a divorce my x said if you keep these kids I’ll take the my kids I was very niece and young, so I adopted the las two out. The oldest found us when he was 18, it was like we had never were apart. My kids were all so close so now I had 2 boys and 2 girls, all so happy, but now they wanted their sister. Too. But she wasn’t interested at that time, when she turned 48 she was ready, now we are complete and tighter than ever, like we were always there, now the two I adopted live across the street from each other, my oldest passed away at 48 so he did not get to meet the youngest that’s the saddest part of all. I, too, was adopted, but did not get my wish of being accepted by my birth mother's husband or my half sisters, they simply did not want contact at all and neither would they give me even a photo of her. I have, however, been blessed with a beautiful son who is the Sunshine of my life and who comprehends the loss I feel of no family. So interesting. I've never been able to watch adoptee stories. I was placed for adoption at birth & never thought I'd have the reunion story. I'm so glad you had such a great experience! I recently connected with my birth mother & it's been effortless. We meet in Sept for the first time & I'm so excited to see her in person! I have 4 siblings! Excited for that, too. My birth father has no interest, but that is absolutely his right. I love hearing good stories now that I'm able to without crying, lol. The effortlessness of it all has been the most shocking part. I've never really felt like I fit. It's a strange feeling to feel that for the first time at 35.

I'm so happy to hear of your wonderful reunion!! Congrats! I'm sure the face-to-face meeting will be awesome. The effortless part of it all is still so amazing to me. It's been over twenty years since I found my birth family (I was 29 when I found them, 30 when I met them in person) and there has never been a hint of weirdness from any facet of the family. I NEVER would have expected that. Are your bio-grandparents still alive? If so (and if they have interest), I recommend getting to know them. I didn't do that nearly enough. I wish I would have called the grandparents just to talk to them at times. I saw them fairly often, and we had nice talks, but I wish I would have done more to get to know them better. I was able to get to know all four of them, but not to the extent I now wish I had. Does that make sense? Also, when you go to meet your birth fam, bring as many pictures of yourself growing up as you can find. I was mesmerized looking at their photos, as they were to see mine. You've made my day!!

Genetics are very powerful! So happy for you that you’ve connected to your family. I’m sure it bring a lot of closure to who you are and to now build those relationships is amazing! 💗 I have 2 adopted girls who are 14 now. One was an anonymous, embryo adoption so we don’t know the biological family. My other daughter was adopted through a large, national adoption agency. We are very close to her biological mom and siblings. She already had 2 boys and eventually married and had a girl. They are truly a part of our family. We visit, call, FaceTime, and send gifts. We get a long so well! It feels natural for all of us. My daughter gets sad when we leave them, we all do actually. She deals with not living closely as well as she can. I think the bottom line is we’re all humans doing the best that we can. We should treat everyone as family. It really enriches our lives! Oh, I’ll add, that the last time we all visited her birth mom noticed she talks just like her. 🤣 My daughter LOVES fashion just like her grandma. 🎉

Doesn’t always work out that way, but wonderful when it does. I’m 80yrs old now, but I was a ward of the state from the time I was two yrs old. At 16 at looked up my father, went to see him and he was a complete loser so I never bothered again.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I think your outcome is the norm. The sister I grew up with was also adopted, and she did not have positive interaction when she found her birth mother. You must be a very strong person to make it through your situation. Take care!
