Kiara, I want to thank you for your bravery in posting this video. I’m in a similar boat - I’m trying to get into law school this year and I am about to write the LSAT for the second time despite doing so well on my practice tests and dedicating monthsto study. As a perfectionist, it’s hard for me to accept “failure” especially when I’ve worked so hard for something and the situation doesn’t roll out the way I “planned” it. However, by opening up about our setbacks, we normalize them and reduce the stigma around failure. I think it’s important to remember that just because something doesn’t work out now, it doesn’t mean the door is closed forever... you just might have to wait a little longer. A few years from now you’re going to be a badass nurse and it won’t matter how many times you took the CNA exam. Keep your head high and smiles on, you got this ❤️

I failed the bar exam earlier this year. It was sooo defeating. Failure can feel lonely for the exact reason that you mentioned - no one wants to talk about it cause they’re embarrassed. Thank you for sharing despite that and hopefully now you know you are so not alone!! Thousands of qualified, competent people don’t pass certification tests (Michelle Obama didn’t pass the bar the first time!). We’ll get them next time around and be licensed SO SOON. You got this girl! 💕

Hi Kiara. I'm a medical student. I'm 1 year behind my classmates but you know what, because i took some classes twice, I am better at them. I never let it put me down and now i look back and see how far I've come. Sometimes failures show us things success can never teach. I'm grateful and proud of myself. And for you, we all know how much you wanted this and how much work and dedication you put into it. You're gonna be a great nurse some day, we are all so proud of you❤

this is your first "nursing" test. you are entering a new realm, new lingo, new ways to do things. I love that you shared that you fail. It makes you a lot more relatable. I am honestly so amazed by your mindset through all of this because it can be so difficult to stay positive when you face set backs! When I applied to PhD programs the first time during my senior year of college, I didn’t get into a single program and I remember feeling like such a failure to the point that I barely got out of bed for at least a whole day. But that failure taught me so much about myself and when I applied again, I got accepted to multiple schools and started my program this year and couldn’t be more grateful.

Kiara I'm SO proud of you!!! Thank you so much for your honesty. I know you will have smashed that second exam!! I completely failed my first official university exam; I got 37% whilst a pass was 40% and most of my classmates got 60%... I let myself feel sad and angry for a good few days but in the end I decided take it as a learning opportunity and tried really hard to improve my study techniques. I had a few other hiccups along the way but I ended up graduating this summer with a first class honours degree (which is the highest you can get at undergrad in the UK); I would've never believed even a year ago that I would achieve this and I think having that early failure definitely helped give me the motivation and drive to move past subsequent hurdles.

Your ability to grieve and then make a plan to move forwards makes you so much more of an inspiration than if you were 100% successful all the time. For a positive "bounce back" story: after years of having the same dream of becoming a reporter and even getting into my dream school/ program, I failed and didn't get into the second year of my program (at the time they only took people in the top 50% of the GPA). Long story short, after lots of ups and downs figuring out what I wanted to do, I got my BA History and am now in grad school and on my way to a career in museums & curation - which I know will make me happy! Failures, big and small, happen to everyone. How we move forwards determines who we become, and seeing how gracefully you took on this challenge is just a testament to how great you are!

I stumbled across your apartment tour a while ago and I loved your attitude so much that I quickly binge watched all of your college videos. One thing I love about you is your drive and I know how devastating the first “failure” feels. Thanks for sharing it with us and not editing out your immediate reaction to the news. One of my many failures/bounce backs was my college education. After being a straight A student through high school, I took 6 years to finish my BS with a 2.0 GPA. After I graduated, I ended up stumbling across a field I love (epidemiology) and got my MPH and PhD before I turned 30. So don’t think less of yourself for failing the first time around - keep pushing through.

I'm currently in my second year of Paediatric and General Nursing in Dublin, Ireland. I wanted to share the same feeling i had after my first block of clinical, which i hated it made me reconsider everything i thought i wanted and my future career i felt as if i had failed at first. I then took up a job as a CNA (Health Care Assistant in Ireland) and let me tell you that it has reassured me i am on the right path. After taking a knock the first time i have bounced back and gained unmeasurable amounts of confidence in the process. Taking a hit like failing an exam or having a bad clinical experience will make you a better and stronger nurse. So excited to see you go through your nursing journey!

Not my own bounce back but something that has helped me survive being a STEM major so far.... I was freaking out over my general chemistry final grade. I happened to be at a family dinner when I got my grade and was sitting right next to my cousin’s wife who had just graduated med school. She told me that she failed general chemistry twice, but yet she still managed to not only get into med school, but graduate AND have a baby her last year. She told me something I think about all the time now when I do poorly on exams or in a class: “It may feel like it now, but that failure isn’t going to ruin your life. You just have to get up and keep going and you’ll get it eventually. I’m living proof of that!” I know the failure stung but I believe in you and I now you did well on your test! You’ll be an amazing CNA and nurse!

Katie thanks for sharing and for being transparent. You are intelligent, highly dedicated, and caring three traits the will make you an excellent nurse. The emotions and feelings you expressed are normal to the human experience is the choices you make afterwards that it revealing. I'm glad you checked your scores again, you gathered more information about the skill you missed (maybe see if you and find a video on the other skills that you didn't have in you last test just incase you get them when you retake your test), and that you decided to retake the test. At the end of the day they call it medical practice for a reason so the learning process is continual. I think that it is amazing there are skills that CNA/LPN/RNs have that doctors never learn (vice versa) so I think it is great that you are showing that you understand each skill now because things will be quite different when you are working with patients. I have "failed" before (not enough time to share) something on actual test and at other times my "failures" were based on other peoples expectations (which were usually not standards that valued or wanted for myself to begin with). I learned from each experience (good and bad) and I was able to see them as growth opportunities instead of "failures" that defined me... I also used those experiences to encourage others because sometimes we need to know that we are not alone! Based on the date of your second test, I hope you did well and that you felt less anxious. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your holiday break!

I think most people don't understand what being in medical education is like. I sure didn't when I entered nursing school. But, after almost 4 years I can say that I don't know of a single person who hasn't failed a skills test. But, every single person who has failed them says the same thing: They learned a lot from it. It sucks so much to see the result, especially when high school and from what I have heard, testing in other programs, does not create the same amount of pressure as skills tests, or as we call them in Ontario, OSCEs. Believe me, when you enter nursing school, you're going to be at such an advantage learning how to do these skills tests before everyone else. You're also going to be so successful because the fear of the unknown has gone away! I failed my 3rd skills test in nursing school, it was a piggy back IV. I can safely say now that that is my strongest skill. It sucks when you find out the news, but learning to deal with the stress of these things will make you a great nurse. And the feelings of embarassment, etc. go away. With one semester left to go in nursing school, I can say that you will fit right in. You WILL be a great nurse. Don't let any set back make you think differently. You've got this

It is so hard not to have those negative thoughts after setbacks, but I have such a huge amount of respect for you being honest and telling us about how you struggled, but also how you are moving forward because that's the most important part! I felt like a failure 2 years ago when I didn't get into PA school the first time. I just finished my second semester last week and I honestly am so happy where I am now. If I had gotten in I wouldn't have met some amazing doctors and co-workers and had the opportunity to really explore my passion of working with patients. I know you'll be a great nurse and I can't wait to see your journey continue!

You picked out all the best gifts for those kiddos! I also love that you're being real and showing your failures alongside your successes. It is just a part of life to fail sometimes and that is okay. We often feel so much shame or pressure around failures because we don't hear about them often enough. It sounds like even though you missed that one thing that you did still do amazing and I can't wait to watch the next video of you saying you passed! I'm in the middle of applying to grad school and I've never not been accepted to a program or school and I am terrified of what that might feel like after all of my apps are reviewed. Chances are that out of seven programs, someone will say no. Watching this and how you've handled yourself and came back has definitely lessened the anxiety I'm feeling so thank you for being so real. 💗

But if there’s one thing I know it’s that I’m going to just have to do better next time. I haven’t really been one to dwell too much on a failure, I try to learn from it and if I’m not then I’ll simply start anew cause I know if I keep being angry or sad I won’t able to look past in order for me to actually do better.

I can so relate to that feeling when I failed my drivers test the first time. I felt really good about it, the instructor said I did great, BUT because of one “critical error,” I have to retake 2 weeks later. Last year, I took an MCAT-equivalent exam in my country, and I did not get my target score. I was not able to enroll in Med school this year because of my results. It was so humiliating, considering I saw myself as a big failure even before receiving my score. I took it again a few weeks ago, and I’m part of the top 10% of the test takers. Things don’t always go the way they should the first time around. I think it’s Life’s way of testing us if we really want something enough to build courage to do it all over again, even if it means “failing” again.

As intelligent, high-achieving women, we have been told our whole lives that failure is to be avoided at all costs, and being perfect is within reach if we work hard enough. I know I took that messaging to heart and it has crippled me. My fear of failure causes me to avoid things that make me feel bad about myself and I can't grow and learn in those areas because I'm not practicing the things I am bad at. But failure is so important as it forces us to reflect on how we failed and how we can do better in the future. It pushes us to approach our problems differently and to learn and grow from our mistakes. Thank you for being honest about your failure and helping us viewers to better connect to you. No one is perfect. We have all failed but do not need to be defined by our failures.

When I started high school, the one thing I wanted to be apart of was colorguard, I had an anxiety attack while I was trying out and then a few weeks before my freshmen year started, someone dropped from the team so they did last minute try outs again and I made it. Spent all 4 years on that team and was the captain my senior year. Everything works out they way that it’s supposed too. We all believe in you, you doing great and mistakes are what build your character, keep your head up hun:)

My first major failure in college was when I took Calculus 1 in the fall of my sophomore year and ended up with a 59 in the class. Over the spring semester I taught myself calculus with the help of Khan Academy. In the summer I took the class again and got an 85. Failure is a part of life, but it all works out in the end

I failed an entire clinical skills exam in Optometry school. Beyond bombed it. I had practiced so hard and during the test everything kept going wrong. I pulled myself up and took the redo and passed no problem. I still graduated and I am an Optometrist. I remember that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach wondering if I was good enough. The only “stupidity” I feel now about that day is that I ever second guessed myself and my knowledge. You got this!

New nurse here! I was originally set to graduate nursing school in August but I failed the exit exam, it as the only thing I had failed in the last two years which was the length of my nursing journey. I was so distraught and embarrassed that I didn't want to retake the course.Thankfully my family and friends encouraged me to do so and I graduated in the beginning of December. I am now applying for jobs when 4 months ago I thought it was the end of my nursing career. You'll come back stronger than ever and even more prepared!

Don’t be so hard on yourself!! Ik you’re just in the process of applying, but nursing school is so hard! They make it that way so that you are prepared to be a well rounded nurse in many difficult environments. If you go into nursing school with the mindset you currently have, where you stress about the tiny mistakes and put immeasurable stress on yourself, you won’t make it. Nobody is perfect and we learn the most from our mistakes!! You are great and will be a wonderful CNA and RN! Keep pushing girl!!! 🥰

I'm in a similar boat... I took the Praxis which is a teacher test and passed math but failed reading and writing so I need to retake it before I can continue in the program. Covid has changed that slightly so I have more time and will be able to continue taking classes even if testing locations in my area don't open again soon since they still are closed since the closed back in March. I originally took it back in November 2019 then planned to study more and take it after the following semester in June (2020). It's okay to fail its a learning experience, and we do get back up and learn from it and it helps us to grow.

I took the International Baccalaureate program when I was in high school and always did extremely well academically. The summer after I graduated I got my test results back and did not end up getting a high enough score to get my IB Diploma. At first I took it extremely hard because I worked so hard and gave up so many things to focus on my academics, but then I realized that the experience and work ethic I gained from this were more important than the diploma itself. I also was almost required to withdraw after my first year of university because the transition was extremely difficult for me. But I’m now in my third year and love what I’m doing!

I didn't pass Critical Care the first time I took it (I had an unexpected death in my family) and retaking that class was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I went into that course the second time feeling so excited to learn the material and ended getting my personal highest score on the exit exam for the course! It also made me realize how much I love critical care and want to work in that field. Fast forward to now...I just found out that I'll be preceptoring on a Tele unit in January! I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and learning from this will only push you to be a better nurse in the future ❤️

Honestly, I'm really glad you posted this. I think it's super important to share the low points in our lives - because WE ALL GO THROUGH IT. Especially with everything that has happened this year, I appreciate now more than ever that there are other people out there, that go through shitty experiences like me. And to see someone who I admire and idolize, someone I would go as far as to say "has it all" - to see that person "fail" ... please don't take this the wrong way, but it's comforting. You have showed us time and time again how strong of a person you are Kiara, and I know this is a minor bump in the road for you. I truly believe all things happen for a reason, and who knows, maybe you weren't supposed to pass the first time. All I know for sure, is that you will achieve your goals! Wishing you the best on this process, and happy holidays xoxo

I had to take the Series 6 Securities test for my job. I got a photocopied exam prep book (which I later found was very old - thanks cheapskate employer). I had such pressure because everyone said oh you have never worked in the financial industry before (yet I had a B.S. degree from a very good business school) and no one from that company had failed the exam. I took one practice exam, very close to my test date and failed badly. I went back through the questions and saw while my wrong answers were correct, there was a pattern of how the questions were to be answered. I then studied again, retook another practice exam, and did well. I did pass the exam. Bottom line is that most licensing exams seem to have some specific way you have to answer the questions. You will do just great the next time.

my story isn't necessarily a "one" time I didn't succeed, but more so a whole WTF moment & not knowing what this meant next for me. I went to grad school to get my master's and more than halfway through my program I discovered that it just wasn't the field for me. I hated what I was doing, questioned everything that I had initially thought, and felt like such a failure - why had I gone to school for this if it wasn't something I loved? I allowed myself some time to cry, feel angry, etc. but then I just developed a game plan. That oh sh*t moment was over 2 years ago, and now I'm happier than ever. I changed my original plan a bit, it took a little longer, but in the long run, it all worked itself out. You'll get there. I have the utmost faith in you. 🤍
