Hadestown is my absolute favorite musical. Not because it makes me happy (that one's Anastasia), makes me cry (yes it does but I cry more with Les Miz and Next to Normal), or makes me laugh (that one's Something Rotten). I think it is a majestic experience, one that brings true catharsis to the soul, and that is why theatre exists. From the storytelling to the music and the staging, it is an absolute masterpiece. I wish I could see it in person (I don't live in the U.S.) but I binge the cast recordings at least once a week. I even made a six page essay about how GREAT this musical is (and I'm planning on adding more haha). also love Great Comet!!! live laugh love rachel chavkin's masterpieces

I saw the Sweeney Todd revival on March 10th, which was also my sweet 16. Omg, it was actually incredible. I think Sutton Foster made me laugh the hardest I ever laughed in my life with By the Sea, worst pies in London and A little Priest. Even with her dialogue, her comedic timing is just amazing. Honestly, I actually really enjoyed Aaron Tveit as Sweeney. He made some excellent acting choices, and his vocals were incredible, especially during epiphany. And Joe Locke did an excellent job as Toby. I really liked his acting choices, especially toward the end. And I really really liked his version of Not while I’m around. I saw five shows when I went to New York that weekend (Water for elephants, Six, Moulin Rouge, Hadestown and Sweeney Todd) and I think Sweeney was my favorite.

I saw Sweeney with Josh and Annaleigh in April last year, and absolutely LOVED it so much I made an entire second trip to NYC in December to see it again before their tenure was up. Not sure what the Aaron/Sutton pairing is like now, but so far I've only heard good things. I am sad that it's apparently closing in May though- such a short run is baffling to me given how hugely popular of a revival it's been.

For me, it was obvious that Hadestown needed to win. I think it's THE musical if the moment. Everyone is talking about it, with the new cast joining. It fits perfectly as the winner of the 2024 bracket. But that all said, I love Mamma Mia. I watched the reality tv show Mamma Mia: I Have A Dream that was all about finding the next Sophie and Sky for the West End. It was very fun to watch and it made me discover some great talents! Some are already casted in big productions and it's a pleasure to see that the show also helped them finding something else even if they don't win. It would have been really fun if Mamma Mia won, but I agree that it was a no brainer and that Hadestown needed to win!

Rent over SUNDAY? Oh you killed me. It's iconic and wonderful but it's definitely flawed and if you want to talk about a show that as you get older you feel less connected to- it's that one. Sunday is such a haunting meditation on creation and the sacrifices and what people don't understand, and the beauty and pain of creation unlike any other musical piece I've ever seen and probably will ever see. It's tremendously singular. Rent influenced everything in Broadway so it's not AS singular to me anymore.

OK this is going to go on for a while. So I saw Sweeney Todd on Broadway twice. The first time with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford and the second time with Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster (this was last Wednesday!) I’m gonna make so many people upset with what I’m about to say and I am a little bias since i’m a big JG fan and also a baritone singer. Aaron didn’t match the role of sweeney. He was great but it wasn’t as good as JG!!! some of his deliveries on the lines got hidden by murmuring… but also, i couldn’t get my mind to put aaron playing sweeney together if that makes sense. All i saw was Gabe from Next To Normal, Christian from Moulin Rouge and just Aaron Tveit. Sutton on the other hand, was fabulous as always!! her comedic timing was amazing and her physical presence was incredible!!! There was one part of A Little Priest that made the whole audience laugh!! but, here’s my conclusion on this since i can go on forever about this! Josh and Annaleigh set the bar HIGH!! I definitely enjoyed both of the times but my mind sticks more with JG and AA!!Thats it! thanks for coming to my ted talk!! (also i’m so sad about the show closing!!!)

*DISCLAIMER: Very long comment ahead with some very controversial opinions! Feel free to debate me on anything I said (and if I make a wrong judgment, please correct me!), but please don't be rude about my opinions. They're just that, opinions, and I'm not trying to say any of these shows are objectively superior or inferior to the others or hate on anyone who likes the raunchier shows. That's your opinion, and it's fine. That kind of thing just isn't for me, and that's all there is to it.* I'm putting my results below, with a detailed explanation of why I picked each one, because that's just my personality, lol. Cabaret or A Chorus Line- I don't really care for either because I don't like raunchy musicals, but based on my very limited knowledge, ACL seems less so. With that in mind, that's my answer. Come From Away or Company- CFA is automatically out for the above reasons. I don't know much about Company, but a basic Google search indicates that it doesn't have too many content concerns, so I think I'd pick that one. It sounds more interesting, anyway. And "Not Getting Married" is just a bop. So yeah, Company. Fun Home or Great Comet- I don't know a ton about either show, but from what I do know, Great Comet is the winner because whatever "adult" stuff might be there isn't front and center, unlike with Fun Home. I mean, I don't know if I'm super interested based on what I've heard (which, again, is very limited), but Fun Home totally lost me with "Changing My Major." I didn't want to know that... Hadestown or In the Heights- Hadestown! The cast recording is soooo good! And the ending, hello? As for In the Heights, I'm not super familiar, but I was scrolling through the lyrics the other day and kept going, "What did I just read?!?" That didn't happen when I was listening to Hadestown, so that's my answer. Les Mis or Mamma Mia- oh, that's easy. Les Mis. The story just hits so much harder than one about a girl trying to figure out who her bio dad is, or whatever happened... Besides, I like the music of Les Mis a lot more. I mean, how can "Dancing Queen" keep up with "One Day More"? Maybe I'm missing something, but based on what I know of both shows, they're just not in the same league. (And yeah, I think we all died a little inside when your cousin slaughtered the name like that...) Moulin Rouge or Newsies- NEWSIESSSSSS!!!!! I love that show so much. Sure, there's a bit of problematic content during that one scene just before "That's Rich," but it doesn't affect the show overall, so it's not that big of a deal. From what I've heard, however, Moulin Rouge is a lot heavier on that stuff, so I'm not as interested in it. I gather MR would probably have more opportunities for more dramatic acting, but overall, it's just not for me. Rent or Sunday- My gut says Sunday because of how raunchy Rent is, but I don't know a ton about it. I also had to google what "finishing the hat" meant... oops. Google is telling me that there might be a bit of inappropriate content in Sunday, but at least it's not front and center like it is for Rent. Sorry. I just can't deal... Sweeney or Wicked- haven't seen either show, so it's a little hard to say. But then, Sweeney's a total bloodbath (not to mention the cannibalism), so I want to say Wicked for that one. Besides, "Defying Gravity"? Come on! Then we have "The Wizard and I," "Dancing Through Life," "One Short Day," and "For Good" … yeah. Wicked. Now, here's where it gets a little interesting since my answers have been so different from yours so far. I'm going to try not to get mixed up... Chorus Line or Company- Company. Like I said, it doesn't have the raunchiness. I also like the songs better from what I've heard, although "What I Did For Love" is amazing. "Being Alive," though... Great Comet or Hadestown- based purely on the cast recordings, Hadestown all the way. I've honestly only heard a few songs from Great Comet, but they really couldn't hold my interest long enough for me to care about the story. Hadestown, however, had me invested from start to finish (even though, like almost everyone else who gets involved with the musical in some way or another, I already knew what was going to happen). Les Mis or Newsies- OH NO!!! I love them both! Augh!!! This decision pains me, but I think I'll have to go with Les Mis on that one. Both stories are fantastic, but the finale of Les Mis just has something special. Not that Newsies doesn't, but I think Les Mis just hits harder. Sunday or Wicked- like I said, I don't know a ton about either show. However, Wicked seems more interesting, so I'm going to go with that. Company or Hadestown- I don't think I really know enough about Company for this comparison to be fair, but I love Hadestown so much that I think I'll just go with that. Les Mis or Wicked- Les Mis for sure. It's way more down-to-earth. Wicked does sound really compelling, too, but I couldn't see it having quite the same impact. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though! Hadestown or Les Mis- my gut says Les Mis, so I'm gonna do that. Both shows are fantastic, but Les Mis just does something to me that Hadestown doesn't. It's hard to explain, but oh well. That was fun!
